Well, we’re about to become very close friends … because today we’re talking all about …
Panties! Undies! Knickers! Unmentionables! Man, there are so many cutesy nicknames for underwear, and I really wasn’t sure which one is the most socially acceptable, so I just sprinkled ’em all throughout. Prepare yourself and enjoy.
We’ll chat about how I organize my panty drawer, what exactly is in it (including the no-show bra I wear under camisoles and white tops), and how to set up a super simple care routine for your undies.
But before we get into all that, let’s back up a little.
We’ve all had a bad experience with uncomfortable underwear, right?
When we’re having to fidget, keep straps up, and keep things in their proper place, it’s hard to feel comfortable or confident.
But without those distractions, we can put ’em on, forget about ’em, and just enjoy the people we’re with.
Letting my uncomfortable underwear distract me from life is not something I’m okay with. So I’ve been working to create the most useful, comfortable panty drawer ever. As you might remember from my Summer Style Series post, my goal was to finish the process this summer. Now I can say I successfully did it!
Here’s how I started:
First, I made a list of three non-negotiable traits I needed in my unmentionables:
-
- COMFORTABLE / This absolutely comes first. No poking, prodding, riding up, or itching allowed. And I learned that comfort doesn’t have to mean expensive. I tried out a few pricey bras, thinking they’d be better because they cost more. But, nope, they were as uncomfortable as they come. I’ve learned that, for me, comfort means soft, stretchy fabric + no underwire + pullover style, like a sports bra (AKA no hooks in the back).
-
- PRACTICAL / Since I don’t have much in the way of bras and undies, they need to cover a wide range of possible needs. So that means strategic choices like neutral colors and smooth cup bras that can be worn under anything.
- MAKE ME FEEL BEAUTIFUL / I don’t want to reserve feeling beautiful for those times when I pull out my extra special lingerie — I want to feel beautiful in my everyday essentials. So I looked and looked until I found everyday undies that did just that. For me, I feel most beautiful in a longline bra that fits almost like a crop top and feels a little sporty.
Once I had my list, I committed to only buying a piece if it met all three traits.
It was slow going at first — very slow going. It seemed next to impossible to find all three traits in one single piece.
But! To me, it’s not about having an extensive collection of underwear — it’s about having a handful of the right pieces. Since I keep a pretty minimal panty drawer, I really only needed to find one or two perfect pieces.
And eventually, I did.
Ready to get down to specifics? Welcome inside my closet — or at least my panty drawer.
HOW I ORGANIZE MY UNDERTHINGS
Right off the bat, you’re probably thinking this drawer looks a little too minimal to be true. Where are the sports bras and special lingerie?
Excellent question. See, I organize my things a little differently.
I used to hear that the best way to organize was to put like items with like items. Such as, putting all bras together, simply because they are all bras.
But a few years ago, I abandoned that idea and started organizing things based on where I’d need them. For example, I keep my sports bras in the same drawer as my workout clothes. That way, when I’m getting dressed for a workout, I only need to open one drawer.
I also keep lounge bralettes in my pajama drawer so that when I’m getting comfy at night, I only need to open one drawer.
What about special lingerie? I hang them on a little hook right next to my closet door — placing them in such a visible spot reminds me to wear them often (and it pretties up my closet a bit too).
So, since sports bras, lounge bralettes, and special lingerie all have a place, all that’s left in my underwear drawer is my everyday essentials. It speeds up the process of picking out underwear each morning. Plus the drawer just looks nice and clean and clutter free, just how I like it.
EVERYDAY BRAS
Like I mentioned before, in my non-negotiable traits list, comfort comes first.
In fact, I’m so stubborn about comfort that I’ve been known to take an exacto knife to bras to cut out the underwire and boning. The black bra you see in the very back of my drawer used to have underwire — until I cut it out last year. I also did it to an old swimsuit just a few weeks ago. It works exceptionally well, if you want to try it.
But then, this summer, I found my perfect bra! A soft, wireless bra with plenty of support and a bit of lift, too! (Here’s a racerback version too and a plunge version with a little less lift) No more cutting wires out of bras for this girl!
I have three total: one nude bra and two black bras (black is my favorite color to wear underneath — it makes me feel beautiful).
The nude bra you see in the front of my drawer is my no-show nude strapless bra — this is the one you’ve all been asking about!
The combo of a nude color and smooth cups means it works in just about any situation I could possibly need. It’s what I wear underneath my white silk cami and any other light tops.
There’s also something about the shape of this bra that stays put. I’ve been wearing this shape for years, even though it’s hard to find. I’m not sure if there’s a technical name for it, but the cups just come up a little higher on the sides. Balconette or demi style strapless bras fall right down on me, but this shape never moves. I love it.
Fit tip: For me, I’ve found that this bra works best when worn a little lower on the ribcage. If you’re trying it out, test out a few spots up and down your ribcage until you find where it sits most comfortably.
Even though this bra has underwire it’s quite comfortable — no poking and no scratching. However, I might still end up cutting out the wires. Old habits.
And I still have my eye out for a comfortable, wireless strapless bra that stays put. I recently tried this wireless strapless bra — sadly, it didn’t work for my girls, but it might work for you if you’ve got a little more going on up top.
EVERYDAY PANTIES
Moving on to panties … my ultimate favs are Patagonia thongs (hooray, no panty lines!) and sport hipsters (hooray, ultimate comfort!). They’re all black and they’re all the same. Boring? Not to me. I love black and I love the way I feel in black.
For me, the Patagonia makes the perfect undies. They’re soft but they stay put. Plus they’re tagless, made of recycled fabrics, and eco-friendly.
To fold or not to fold? Honestly, I don’t fold my undies and I don’t feel the slightest bit bad about it — sorry Marie Kondo. Since all of my panties are the same, I know exactly what I’m grabbing and I don’t need to organize them any more than tossing them into two separate bins — thongs on the right and hipsters on the left.
One last note about panties: I’m curious, have any of you tried THINX period panties? My sister-in-law just told me about them the other day — supposedly they can replace tampons or pads. Could this be true? If you’ve tried ’em, let us know in the comments if they work. Pretty please.
LINGERIE
Sexy is different for all of us and I want to live in a world where we each feel free to embrace our own version of sexy.
The truth is, sure my everyday undies are plain, but there’s something about that no-frills, black longline bra that makes me feel fun and beautiful. Simple and sporty is my version of sexy and I’m finally just embracing it, instead of trying to fit myself into someone else’s definition of sexy.
I do, however, enjoy a good shake up every now and then, so I have a few lacy pieces that I love — like this tie front bralette that’s made in the USA. While I’m an fierce editor of my closet, I keep pretty lingerie forever even if I haven’t worn it in a long time. It’s fun to have a stash to draw from when I feel like mixing it up.
CARE
I want my underthings to last a long, long time, so I regularly hand wash them in the bathroom sink with this delicate wash. (And here’s another delicate wash that’s also a great option and only $10.)
I keep things simple and just wash one of my bras when I notice it needs it. First, I let it soak in the bathroom sink for a little while. Then the next time I walk in the bathroom, I hand wash it for about 30 seconds, then hang it over the bathtub to let it dry. No big deal.
A FEW ORGANIZING TIPS
– Try reserving your panty drawer for your everyday panties and bras only — no socks or other little things allowed.
– When it comes to everyday bras + undies, edit ruthlessly. Keep only pieces that are comfortable, practical, and make you feel sexy — your version of sexy.
– If you’re looking for a new organization system, try what I do: keep everyday bras in one drawer, sports bras with your workout gear, and lounge bras with your PJs.
– Drawer organizers go a long way in the panty drawer, but there’s no need to go overboard. Just two or three little bins should do. Try cardboard boxes or these IKEA cubes — they’re what I use.
– Create a special, visible place for your pretty lingerie. Hang them on a hook in your closet so they are on display. Seeing them regularly will remind you to grab them often.
– Set yourself up for success by preparing your washing station. Keep delicate wash in your bathroom drawer and designate a spot where you can hang things to dry — the towel rack in your shower should work nicely. Another good option, that a few of you have been asking about, is the drying rack I have in my Instagram photos.
I’ve found that these tips work well for me, but feel free to take or leave ’em. We’re all different and it’s all about finding what works for you.
Do you have a different approach to organizing your panty drawer? I’d love to hear about it!
xo
Hi! Thanks for the timely post (timely for me!). I just tried the Thinx underwear, and they are amazing. I got the hip huggers, black. They are very comfortable – and lacy up top which is a nice boost when you have your period (my period-underwear are usually NOT sexy). Most importantly, I loved how they worked!!! I think you can go with only the undies if you have a light flow, and they’ll help w/ overflow if you’re heavier. I wore them alone and had no problem. It’s so freeing! Thanks again.
I’d agree with about all of this. I’ve had them for about 6-7 cycles and also use a tampon on heavy flow days, but THINX are a GREAT back up. (Like the time I was running errands with my 2 small boys, I knew I was leaking but I didn’t have to deal with public restrooms, etc because I had underwear back up!) I also tend to have irregular cycles, so it’s great to wear them when I’m waiting for my period to start. The light day ones are good enough for me as my period is tapering off. I have a friend who’s had success with THINX and a Diva Cup so no more waste!
I use the Diva Cup and Dear Kates (basically the same as Thinx, just different brand), and I can say first hand that it’s great. No complaints. I like wearing the Dear Kates just in case… Rarely, the Diva Cup has shifted, and I just like the piece of mind. I’ve had my Dear Kates for about four years. I’m pretty happy about being waste free in that department.
I agree that they’re great! Caroline, I share your prioritization on comfort, and hence don’t like the “cheeky”. The “hipster” is comfortable and also offers the most absorbency. I found it was enough alone! They run small, so if you’re between sizes, round up.
Thank you ladies for all the feedback! It’s so nice to get first hand advice on an idea that is new! :) xo, Caroline
I’d never heard of these! I love the idea, but not sure how that’d work. I have a heavier flow (3-4 pad changes per day, le sigh), but even on light-flow days I’d feel a little grungy wearing the same pad all day. Do you do a panty-change during the day?
Ahhh, periods.
On my really heavy days I do do a panty-change mid-day (and on my most recent period twice in one day – Yikes!) but I really don’t mind. It’s actually quite lovely and even feels a little luxurious (dare I say) to put on fresh undies in the middle of the day. I definitely prefer doing that to changing and disposing of pads multiple times a day or dealing with tampons. On lighter days the Thinx do a great job of wicking moisture away so you don’t have that grungy feeling.
I am a total Thinx convert. I’ve survived two periods now with Thinx alone and they totally work. I’ve been recommending them to all my friends. :)
The link for the ikea cubes you use doesn’t seem to work on my mobile device. Can you please repost a link? Thanks!
Hey Stephanie, should be fixed now! Thanks! :) xo, Caroline
I use the same organizers and the same concept! I love lots of Marie Kondo suggestions, but I find I like organized bras (like yours above) and am just fine tossing the undies around, the folding worked for awhile but I tossed the idea and don’t regret it!
Simone, it’s is so freeing to let that go! :) xo, Caroline
Yay yay yay! I’ve so been looking forward to this post! Streamlining my underwear has been a slow and arduous process. I just bought six pairs of hanky lanky low rise lace thongs and I love them! I’ll have to give the patagonias a try too. Also, I want to buy the bra you mentioned as your everyday, but the link is broken! Help??
Thanks so much for your researched and detailed post! You make yours reader’s lives so much easier and simple. I know we all appreciate it!
Xo,
Caitlyn

Hi Simone! That link should be fixed now! Thanks for the support :) xo, Caroline
It looks like those everyday bras aren’t available anymore. :(
I love keeping everyday bras and sports bras separate! It makes getting ready so much easier. What I’d never thought about, but might try, is having monochromatic underwear. That seems genius! (Except for perhaps keeping some neutrals in reserve for lighter colored bottoms.)
I really enjoyed this post. For an area that always seems to be in disarray, this was a very calm approach to tackling it. Many thanks! <3
Thanks for the tips. I think the bras we buy truly make or break how we look in our clothes, so I am willing to spend extra on a good bra. I love your organizing tips. I have two lingerie drawers. In one I keep socks and panties. In the other I keep bras and pjs. I also make sure I don’t fold my bras. I put them in the drawer the same way they do in the nice lingerie stores. Great post. You’ve given me a lot of new ideas.

I’ve tried the THINX! I got the hipster style, since it has more absorbency than the thong, but I found it dug into my hips in an unflattering way. Not necessarily an uncomfortable way but not super cute. Then again, I have a LOT of butt. If you’re more narrow through the hips than me this might not be a problem. I want to get a thong version to see how it compares. I hate full coverage undies so I haven’t/have no interest in that cut.
I was shocked how much I liked them other than that, though. I thought for sure they’d feel diaper-y or I’d feel wet/icky the whole time… but you don’t! Except on the heaviest days (obviously ymmv here) I can go without a tampon or anything else the whole day and never be bothered by it. They don’t even feel wet to the touch or on your skin. They’re definitely thicker than most undies since there’s multiple layers of fabric but it’s not as bulky as I expected.
Highly recommend trying, but it hasn’t completely changed my period habits. Keeping an open mind for the future though. I mostly wear them around the house/to sleep in during my period, but less out and under my clothes. Part of that is the Texas summer — I am wearing a lot of light weight, light colored stuff and they are bulkier than what I need. Under jeans they’re fine though (even the somewhat unflattering hipster panty lines they give me) so I may wear them more when it’s cooler.
FWIW I organize my undies basically the same as you and it’s wonderful! Sports bras with workout gear.. of course!
Elyse, thanks for the THINX feedback! I am seriously considering giving them a try with all the rave reviews :) xo, Caroline
Loved this article Caroline, what a nice reminder and step by step process of bring intentionally into all areas of my wardrobe! Now let me say- I LOVE Thinx! I’ve been using them for about 4 cycles now and I love them. I find them perfect back up with a cup or tampon during the day, or on their own at night or when my flow gets lighter. I do have a heavier flow so I got the more absorbent ones and I’ve never had an issue. I soak them in cold water when I’m done using them then hand wash them and all is well!
Thinx are AMAZING! I am so happy I invested in them. They also have phenomenal customer service – I had to switch out sizes. I cannot recommend trying them enough!
Lauren, good to know! Thanks for the info :) xo, Caroline
Thanks for this post! My panty drawer is a mess..
Love from Sweden!
I love Thinx! I bought the thong first to give it a try. It works great and is super comfortable. My daughters both have the hig huggers also and are super happy with them.
Tammy – great! Thank you! xo, Caroline
I came to very similar set of unmentionables and drawers. Thank you for sharing.
I use Thinx and it’s saviour for me as I have my period very heavy due to fibrosis. I have hipsters and absolutely love them. And I have sports, those are not as loved by me: tighter and less reliable when body is in horizontal position. Quality of sports arent up to hipster too. I still use pad with it (no wings though). I beleive it’s very much depends on how you personally would feel it. No other way but try.
I just want to add that It’s hiphaggers obviously, just I call them hipsters. I am pear shaped and they look much more flattering on me then sport model. It’s actually look sexy which is hard to beleive
Lea – I also love undies that make me feel sexy! :) xo, Caroline
Your bra links don’t appear to be working–would love to have the updated link to see which option you found works for you!
Hey Sarah, the links should be fixed. Thanks! xo, Caroline
After months of thinking over the THINX panties I finally broke down and bought some! I am in love, they aren’t super bulky and can be worn even when you aren’t on your period. I haven’t worn them as a way to totally replace tampons etc but I personally use a Diva cup (which I love) and I love having the panties as a just in case type of thing. They are great for leaks if you have any, not to mention they make some that are actually super cute!
Kelly, awesome! Thanks for the feedback. That Diva cup sounds intriguing also :) xo, Caroline
I love my Diva Cup. It takes a little getting used to but I wouldn’t use anything else now
I agree the diva cup is amazing!!! That’s what was really the game changer for me. I use thinx as a backup
Totally on board with Diva too. I’ve used mine for 5 years and converted several friends and we will never look back!
I’ve been using a diva cup for over 6 years and I’m still loving it. Will never go back to disposable. Imagine all the tampon applicators we could keep out of the ocean (yes, they end up there!) if everyone switched.
I too appreciate all of these remarks about thinx. I’ve been using lunapads and they work great, but are bulky feeling at times. Going to give thinx a try for sure.
Yes — I’ve tried Thinx! I’d say they’re good if you know what you’re in for. I probably use tampons for about a day out of my period and the rest of the time just use the Thinx, but that obviously depends on how heavy your flow is. They really do pull moisture away. Downside is that they’re high maintenance. You have to rinse them at the end of the day, then wash them in the washing machine, then air dry them. It’s hard to keep them smelling clean, although using vinegar when you do your daily rinse can help. If you just use them in place of panty liners this is probably less of an issue but if they’re replacing everything just be prepared to work to keep them in good shape. All in all, I like them but wish they were easier to care for. Probably too much info, but you asked :-)
Rebecca, not TMI — just real life! Haha. Thank you for the honest feedback :) xo, Caroline
THINX are fabulous! I have the hiphugger, high-waist, sport, and cheeky. The hiphugger is most definitely a winner. I wear them with tampons on the first 2-3 days so if I bleed through there is no panic and on the last 3-5 days I wear them on their own so I don’t have to deal with a tampon. No issues here!
You mentioned that you have some lounge bralettes. What kind and style do you have? I’ve been looking for some quality, lounge bralettes to wear to bed and I’m not sure where to start!
I’ll have to try the Patagonia panties. I’ve been on the hunt for good undies that stay put and are comfy. I love all black underwear as well! Though I also keep a few nudes just in case.
Hi Julia, you might like the VS Lounge bra. I mean, with a name like that, you can’t go wrong! But I wear this one: http://bit.ly/2akyR8p. I actually have two – one in grey and one in nude. They are so, so comfy. I’ve had ’em forever! :) xo, Caroline
Thanks so much! I’ll check that one out. :)
Any clue on if the “easy” push-up comes in an A-cup size and maybe it’s just sold out??
Hey Annie, I’m guessing it’s sold out, but the twist push-up (with the racerback) comes in an A cup. :) xo, Caroline
Loved this post! I am finishing nursing baby #3 and I am so ready for a revamp of my intimates! This was very timely. Thanks!
P.S. You have one of my favorite blog sites. So clean and pretty.
Thanks for the kind words Jesseca! Good luck revamping the undie drawer :) xo, Caroline
Great post!
Just wanted to share my vote for the most comfortable no-show non-thong panties I have ever found:
https://m.soma.com/store/product/vanishing-edge-microfiber-with-lace-hipster/560001067?color=&catId=cat8239306&fromSearch=true
Just in case there are any others out there who hate both thongs AND panty lines. ?
I bought some Vanishing Edge just last week at the recommendation of the sales girl. They are fabulous. It’s funny how we are all different. I wouldn’t wear a thong if my life depended upon it. Just no way in this world. ;)
Thank you for the recommendation! There is nothing on this planet that could induce me to wear a thong!!
I love these undies. So comfy, cute, no panty lines. i’m basically purging anything that’s not these.
I agree!! I was introduced to the vanishing edge underwear about 6 months ago and have since replaced all of my underwear with them! I have about 12. They are perfect!!
Loved this post! Can you make one about sport bras? :)
Yes! I would love to hear about sports bras. So hard to find the perfect one.
Awesome post! This is so helpful.
I haven’t tried thinx but I’m totally sold on the diva cup. I literally forget I have my period sometimes.
I second this! It’s a game changer.
Sarah, that’s amazing! I’m hearing all good things about it. :) xo, Caroline
I organized my undies drawer today and then I read this post. Perfect timing! I really like your blog, you inspired me to create my work-capsule wardrobe and to keep things simple and focused, thank you.
I have a small question, maybe because english is not my native language, or because some cultural difference, but what is a lounge bra? Is a bra to sleep? Why to wear a bra when sleeping?
Hi Marta! A lounge bra is one that I consider to be the most comfortable. Not necessarily for sleeping, but maybe for when you’ll just be hanging out at home, working on the computer or watching a movie — maybe a bralette or really light support sports bra. :) xo, Caroline
I’m so interested to hear everyone’s thoughts on Thinx–my sister tried them and they leaked right through, so she gave me her unused pairs which I have yet to try. I figured they were a too-good-to-be-true thing. Now I’m hoping they work for me like some of you here. Anyway, Caroline thanks for your ideas as always! I love your style! I’ve been so inspired by you, so thanks!!
Mary, I hope they work out for you! It sounds like most people wear a tampon with them for heavy days, and then they work great the rest of the time :) xo, Caroline
I have tried Thinx but they didn’t work so well for me due to synthetic fabric. I love the Luna Pads (www.lunapads.com) Panties that also have a built in pad (and for some styles optional liner) because they are made with cotton (organic optional). They wash well and are super comfortable!!
Juliette, thanks for that recommendation also! :) xo, Caroline
I’m glad to read about all of these options. I have seemingly developed a slight allergy to feminine products which results in lots of itching/irritation every month during my period. I have been thinking about thinx but had not heard of the diva cup or luna pads. i’m glad to see there are several products to try…perhaps my problem will be solved. thanks!
Another source for underwear if you’re looking for “ethical” clothing is PACT. I bought a variety of their panty styles and like them all.
Martina, fantastic! Thanks for sharing :) xo, Caroline
Organizing the Panty drawer successfully is so difficult ..
https://freshfashioneveryday.wordpress.com/
I also love Thinx! They have been life-changing for me, as I have always had a heavy period. I use a Lily cup with them on the first day or two and then I can just wear them on their own, which means a waste-free cycle, and no risk of TSS. It gives me such peace of mind to have Thinx on, especially while traveling! Plus, no bulkiness from alternative options, especially overnight. My only regret is not buying them earlier!!
Katy, I love that they are waste free AND there’s no risk of TSS. I think women have needed something like this for a long time! :) xo, Caroline
My underwear drawer is divided into three sections: socks on the right, panties on the left, bras, slips, tights, spanx and a camisole in the middle. I only wear one type of panty and one type of bra. If a clothing item won’t work with them, I don’t wear it. Both are from Victoria’s Secret Cotton Lingerie line. I wear the Perfect Coverage Unlined Underwire bra (two in black and two in white) and the High-Legged Brief (five in black and five in white).
I love this post!! From the specific details on your underwear selections to your organization tips, I feel like I got a lot of great takeaways from the post! The only con is that a lot of big bra sellers (victoria or nordstrom) don’t have smaller sizes for all of their bra styles, so I guess the search continues for me, but overall this post was so great; thanks!
Check out the brand Natori; I am a smaller size and love a lot of their bras!
My wardrobe is becoming increasingly monochrome but my undies drawer is a riot of colour….lime, coral, shocking pink. All the colour I don’t wear on the outside!!! But comfort aaaaallll the way
Rachel – sounds FUN! :) xo, Caroline
I love your ideas and tips when it comes to underwear. Thanks for sharing!
http://www.thebusinessofblooming.com
Oh man I have (and love) two of the VS wireless body bras but I didn’t know they had an option without the back hooks! Maybe have to give those a try :)
Also for those looking for alternative period stuff I switched to a menstrual cup a few years ago and have never looked back. But I like the idea of the thinx underwear as well since I’d rather not wear the cup on lighter days and usually just use a liner.
So Fascinating! I enjoyed your post, and everyone’s comments. Definitely a thought provoking topic. Thank you for opening the drawer!
It’s like having a big sister with all the answers. I appreciate all the Thinx input; I am curious about them as well. I have s few questions….what panties do you wear for work outs?! Same as every day? I am also curious that you only have black panties: what do you wear with light or more sheer bottoms?! And what about PJ panties? Finally, I also want more info about lounge bras….I need support for around the house, never want to “waste” my regular bras–but most barley yes aren’t supportive enough. I’d love some recommendations! It’s like a whole new category of underthings.
Hi Pat, Let me get to some of these questions for ya! :)
This may be TMI, but under yoga pants, I don’t wear undies. I know, I know, it’s controversial, but it’s just personal preference. If I did, however, I’d probably still wear my Patagonia thongs. Other than that, all of my workout/running shorts have panties built into them.
In regards to the light/sheer bottoms — I don’t really have any! I used to have some white corduroy skinnies, but sadly, they don’t fit anymore. I do have a cream shift dress, but it’s got a slip built in and it’s nice and loose, so you can’t see anything underneath. If I ever do need nude undies, I’m sure I’ll just grab a pair of my beloved Patagonia thongs.
As for sleeping, I just wear my Patagonia hipsters. :)
And lastly, the lounge bras that I love are this: Day Bra from Nordstrom Rack. So comfy that I have 2 – one in gray and one in nude.
Hope that helps! Have fun organizing :) xo, Caroline
Thanks!
I don’t wear panties under my workout leggings either. It wouldn’t be comfortable and anyway I work out at home.
Uh, typos. Looking for reccomendations for lounge bralettes with some shaping/support for 32 DD’s!
So timely – my undie drawer definitely needs a refresh. Thankfully I’ve found undertyings that work for me but I need to replace some things and purge a bunch of junk that doesn’t work. I’ve also started storing a tin if other stuff (makeup, receipts) in there and I like the idea of making it an undies-only drawer.
I really love this post, full of new information and great tips! I had my drawer organized but now it´s again a mess, and I love your little compartments inside the drawer, I need this!
http://www.sinnamona.blogspot.com
Brilliant post! I also keep my sports bras with my workout wear and my secret support vests with my nightwear. I am currently replacing a few old bras and have bought some new ones – having discovered my size has changed…
I was recommended to wear new bras for just a small time for the first day, like wearing in new shoes. Also, if it is uncomfortable the bra can be taken back. I am going to investigate thinx, I wonder if they’re available here (UK).
Great post! Thanks for sharing the fruits of your research
As always Caroline, you’ve given me a lot to think about – I think I’ll need to go reorganize my undies now! I use Thinx pretty much exclusively now, keeping a couple conventional options only as an emergency backup. They are comfortable, cute, and they feel like regular panties. I feel like a normal human on my periods, because I’m not constantly checking the time so I know when to change a pad or tampon. It’s not a huge ordeal anymore. Occasionally on my heaviest days I’ll go through two in one day, but generally I just have a daytime pair and a nighttime pair. Totally worth the money, and they give back too! I even wrote a blog post about them if you want to read about my experience: bit.ly/2a3VSeL Thanks for being the inspiration you are Caroline!
Thank you so much for sharing Amy! xo, Caroline
This was such an interesting post to read! You’ve inspired me to have a clean/clear-out!! Haha, thanks :-)

After reading your post I went straight to Victoria Secret and tried the bra you mentioned….I’m in love with this bra!!! Except I had to place an order because they were out of black in my size. I can’t wait to get it! Thank you so much for this recommendation. Been looking for a comfortable wireless, flattering, bra. Also, what size do you order in the Pantigonia thongs. I always bought a size up, in thongs, otherwise they would be too tight. TIA:)
Hi Devon, I ordered a small. For me, that’s my regular size, so I’d say they run true. :) xo, Caroline
Just a PSA- many of the wireless/pull on styles are on sale right now, so if you bought them before you can ask for a price adjustment.
Great info Jenn! Thanks for sharing :) xo, Caroline
I love this post, first, because I know I can always use help in that department and it is so rarely talked about. I love that you went there! :) I organize my bras and panties by occasion too, and found it to be so helpful. I especially love the idea of hanging special items on a hook in your closet – that is a great idea! I might have to see if I could exicute that in my closet… Do you have special hooks or just regular ones?
I have not tired the period panties either, but after reading the comments, I may have to try!
Hi Alisha! The hook isn’t anything special — just a regular ol’ hook that was in the closet when we bought the house :) But! If you’re looking for some awesome little hooks that are a breeze to install, we use these for our towels in the bathroom and we LOVE them. They are modern and minimal and they just attach with 3M self adhesive: http://bit.ly/2a9KWwo Hope that helps :) xo, Caroline
I have 3 THINX. Figured more full coverage during flow was a good idea so I got hip-hugger, hi-waist and sport. Sport is my favorite but hi-waist is very pretty and helps disguise bloating.
The care is a bit busy but worth it to me for the peace of mind.
My absolute favorite function for them is for working out so that if my cup ‘adjusts’ I am dry and odor free!
Also great as I work 12hr shifts in a hospital and for obvious reasons don’t like cleaning my cup there, just feels icky.
Totally my choice for period undies.
Bethany, thanks for sharing your experience with them! :) xo, Caroline
I love this post! I too store my athletic underwear in my athletic drawer, and loungewear in my pajama drawer! I started doing it about 2 years ago, and I wondered why I never thought of it before.
I also agree with everyone on THINX. They are amazing, and I’m glad I made the investment.
I get excited every time you write a new post. Thank you!
I’m very surprised no one has mentioned the DKNY fusion brief, the best no-panty-line panty in the world. I found them a couple years ago and will never look back. Plus they are on the anniversary sale at Nordstroms right now.
Oh, I’ll have to look into that one too Eliz. Thanks :) xo, Caroline
My sports bras are on a shelf with my workout wear, not with the rest of my bras. I wear a Champion underwire sports bra and I have three pairs of Land’s End cropped leggings in a petite size that are discontinued, but Thankfully they are still in good shape. My athletic socks ARE in my underwear drawer with the rest of my socks.
Hi Caroline,
I just stumbled upon your blog, and I’m loving it! Great work! :)
Thanks for joining in Lauren! :) xo, Caroline
I’ve heard of period undies too. While I haven’t tried them and don’t plan to, my concerns with them are what they’re made of (how many chemicals?! eek!) and their impact on the environment.
If you’ve never tried a menstrual cup, you might really like them. I don’t use one. I use Glad Rags, which are organic cotton (the come in conventional, colors, and prints too) reusable pads. If you try a menstrual cup, expect that you may need to try a few to find one that works the best for your body.
XO
Thanks for the feedcback Sage! :) xo, Caroline
Hi Caroline,
With all this talk of simplifying and organizing, I am wondering what you think of backpacks? I started traveling for work and was looking for a fashionable and sustainably made handbag that would hold my laptop and personal things and was easy to carry. I searched for a few months. While I did find some options out there, none of them met my requirements. Bags were way too big or did not have enough compartments on the inside for proper organization. Many women’s handbags also seem to lack a comfortable cross body or shoulder strap that’s padded. I even started looking at men’s work bags, but quickly ended up with those black nylon computer bags that every business traveler carries. I was really hoping to avoid those.
The simple thought hit me when I was packing for a daytrip with my daughter. I was packing a nylon backpack that was a freebie from some work event. Why wouldn’t I use a backpack for travel? It’s hands-free, has padded straps, the weight is distributed evenly across your shoulders and they’re pretty compartmentalized for organization.
I started looking for a sleek and stylish (preferably leather) backpack. Again, I was surprised by the lack of usable options on the women’s side. Many were designer, too small, lacked padded straps or lacked pockets and compartments. The men’s selection was better, but many were too big in size for my petite frame.
I did find something that I liked and it is en route to me now, but I’m wondering if you have ever considered using a backpack – even for every day use – instead of a purse?
I found that using a backpack eliminated the need for me to have several different purses. I am consigning many of my purses, only keeping smaller ones to fit my essentials while out on errands.
Essentially, the backpack help me pair down, simplify and organize. What are your thoughts? Have you ever considered using a backpack?
Hi Elena! I love all the thought and research you have put into this! If it makes your life easier, you’re right — why wouldn’t you use a backpack? I’m crazy about the idea, and I’ve had my eye on the backpacks from Everlane. So pretty and responsibly made: http://bit.ly/29XIypW Which one did you end up ordering? You’ll have to let me know how it works out! :) Thanks! xo, Caroline
https://www.knomobags.com/usa/beaux-espresso-14-backpack.html
Slim profile (important to me since I am petite) but fits everything I need it to fit. The company has fantastic customer service too!
Hi Caroline,
I haven’t commented in quite awhile but so great to have you back and I absolutely love this post.
Would you consider doing a similar one on sleepwear?
Xo
Lisa
Hi Lisa! Sure thing – great suggestion :) xo, Caroline
I love that you wear Patagonia undies! I would love to try em out. Out of curiosity, do they happen to have a cotton lining ?
Hey Meghana, they don’t have a cotton lining. And according to the website, they are made of 82% polyester (62% recycled)/18% spandex (stripes: 93% polyester (43% recycled)/7% spandex jersey). If you decide to try them, I hope you love them like I do! :) xo, Caroline
Buzzfeed Lady Like did an active review of period panties. Might be worth checking that video out? Otherwise I’m into my menstrual cups as well. A revelation.
I’m also on the I-love-THINX train! They really are great. I just went for it and bought 8 pairs (have some in every style). It’s nice not having to wash them daily, usually just once so they don’t sit around too long. I’ve been rinsing them out after wearing and putting them in a wet bag (I think my kind is one you can use for cloth diapers) until I can wash them. But for me they totally replace tampons/pads. It’s so much less of a hassle. Worth trying for sure!!
Hi Caroline,
Loved this post. Please let me know if you would be interested in try a bra by peach. We are changing the way women shop for bras, panties and basics by bringing the experience direct to the buyer–no more dressing room drama! We have a patented 10 point measuring system. I would love to share more with you!
Caroline Lazzara
Peach Personal Stylist
I thought I was the only one who cuts out the wires :-)
And I also store my sports bras with my sports clothes.
Lizzy, I guess great minds think alike! ;) xo, Caroline
Hi Caroline,
I’ve loved your blog for a long time– so inspiring and practical!
I have one question: I’ve noticed that you have been gifted many more of your featured items recently (not this post, but several prior). I would love to hear your thoughts about this process and how you manage being sponsored by different companies– maybe a post on this?
Hi Julia, thanks for your question! I have wondered if people would enjoy a post like this, and maybe a little behind the scenes of Un-fancy as well. :) xo, Caroline
So I just wear a lounge bra with a little padding all the time and I love it because it’s so comfortable and I can nurse in it….but it does make me feel frumpy. Thanks for the suggestion the VS bra, I am going to try it
Whitney, I hope you love it. Just has that little extra oomph! :) xo, Caroline
Love the post and your blog! I have seen that little gray container show up in a few of your photos, have been on the look out for something like that! Where is it from?
Hi Carol, it’s actually about 5 years old from Anthropologie. They don’t carry it anymore, and I checked around a few places for something similar, but I’m not finding anything just like it. If you search for jewelry boxes on the Anthro site, however, they have a couple really cool ones right now. Good luck on the hunt! :) xo, Caroline
None of your recommended bras come in a small enough size for me. :p I’m bummed. So for any other tiny-chested girls out there…Aerie makes some cute and comfortable bras for people like us.
Ladylyn, I’m bummed for you! Thanks for sharing the info on ones that work for you :) xo, Caroline
Also lulalu.com makes great bras for A and smaller :)
Hey Caroline! Looks like you already got lots of feedback on THINX, but I’ll add a comment in case it’s helpful! I have 3 pairs of THINX and I actually find them all pretty uncomfortable. The lace ones are itchy at the waist and around the legs, and the workout ones are too loose around the legs and ride up a lot. I also got the boy shorts and those feel a bit diaper-y. Still! They are worth it on those days when you’re sore and a tampon sounds terrible but you don’t want to deal with pads.
However! I’ve been using Dear Kates for about a year and I love them. Sooo comfy—especially the hipsters with the lace on the waistline and the sports hipsters. They aren’t a 100% solution like THINX (they aren’t meant to replace tampons/pads/menstrual cups—just prevent you from ever worrying about leaks). But I think they can definitely replace a panty liner, and they work for the last few days of your period.
Hope this helps!
Hi Randle, thank you for sharing! I’ll look into the Dear Kate’s option also :) xo, Caroline
This is great! I would love to see a similar post about workout wear sometime! I’ve been starting to tackle my day to day clothes and underthings but my workout clothes drawer is a nightmare!!
Just wanted to say thank you for sharing all of the above ! :)
I have always been envious of your wardrobe, but now I am completely green. That drawer is amazing.
Thanks for the great post! I love my moon cup from GladRags. I have more than made up for the price of tampons in just under a year of use. It is super freeing… I feel like I hardly think about my period anymore, which is huge because I flow on the heavy side. I just use a pad or liner along with the cup, which I rarely ever need (it’s more of a precaution). I would suggest it to anyone! I feel better about the environmental impact as well. :) Thinx are definitely something to consider too…
Hi Mary, thank you for the suggestion! I have never heard of the moon cup, so I will look into that as well! :) xo, Caroline
Great post ! Thanks for sharing
Xoxo

new THINX convert. i bought 2 hiphuggers for my heavy days and the sport cut for the lighter days. i’m a size 4, true, and purchased the mediums, the fit well without cutting circulation. i read reviews of people being size 6 and getting the small. the cheeky pair were a bit too cheeky for my liking.
i also use the Diva cup, but since trying the THINX i can’t see myself going that route ever again.
Awesome! Thanks for sharing Lan :) xo, Caroline
Your everyday bra is so cute, but it doesn’t come in my size! I used to use Victoria’s Secret bras, but found that they really didn’t last for me and they weren’t a great fit to begin with. I am currently using Gap Body bras. They are so smooth and lay beautifully under clothes. Again, they aren’t the best fit for me, but they are alright. It is really hard finding bras for 32AA. All the bralettes I have tried make me feel frumpy, but I do like the look of that lounge bra you posted, so I might need to try that out.
I read through the comments hoping that someone would post some cotton panties! I absolutely refuse to wear underwear that isn’t at least 93% cotton, haha. I also don’t like thongs and have a lot of junk in the trunk. I wear the cotton undies from Victoria’s Secret (ok, but fall apart very easily), Gap (I like these), and I recently tried some from Natori that I really like, and they are on sale in the Anniversary Sale for anyone who might be curious. http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/natori-bliss-bikini-3-for-36/3021575?origin=category-personalizedsort&fashioncolor=PINOT%20RED
Oh, and I also tried THINK, but I wasn’t really a fan, probably because they aren’t cotton, haha! I love the concept though!
Victoria, I totally understand the preference for cotton. Glad you have found some that you love! :) xo, Caroline
Looks like your commenters have confirmed, and I’m another HUGE fan of Thinx. I loved them because of the interviews I heard with their founders, loved them because of their bold ads, loved them because of their featuring of transgender men in their ads – then I bought their product and LOVE their product. Officially obsessed. Now that I have a pair, I don’t know how I did before them – they’re great for everyday life, but especially wonderful for situations where getting to a bathroom every 3 hours to change a tampon is more difficult, long haul flights or weekend music festivals included. So great!
Maggie, wow! These things are getting rave reviews aren’t they?! I love that you included how great they are for long flights and music festivals. Sounds too good to be true! :) xo, Caroline
I’m so glad I read this post! I’d never heard of THINX before (I know, I must live under a rock), but after seeing the stellar reviews and reading about them, I’m convinced to give them a try. Also, my strapless bra is Wacoal as well, and it’s great! (wearing it now, actually). :)
Oh, this is wonderful! Merci for the tips… I agree, comfort is KEY. <3
Hi Caroline,
Ohmygosh! My clothes have always been organized but I had far too many of them. Keeping only what I love and making sure everything works together has been life changing. I shop less and feel great in everything I wear. I can’t even find the right words to explain! ☺️ I really do enjoy your posts so much and always look forward to them. Thank you again! Elizabeth
Thank you for the support Elizabeth! :) xo, Caroline
What a fun post, I’m so intrigued by everyone’s endorsement of Thinx and Dear Kate! (for the record I’ve been using a menstrual cup exclusively for more than a decade and I love it! I just replaced it for the first time and after much research online I chose the Lena cup, since it’s made in the US and seems like a great company.)
When I was reading your description of your favorite bra style I could not relate at all! As a larger-busted woman, I can’t fathom not having underwire. However, when I clicked on the link, I was surprised at how it actually looked very supportive! And totally sexy too. Still not sure it would work for my body but it’s fun to have your perceptions challenged! I’ve also slowly been replacing my undies for a simple and comfortable style I found at Target, all in one black. For my bras, I haunt the clearance section at Nordstrom Rack whenever I’m in there to score great deals on my favorite, Natori. Having great underthings that look and feel great is the best way to get dressed!
Sarah, “Having great underthings that look and feel great is the best way to get dressed!” I couldn’t agree more! :) xo, Caroline
https://www.curvy.com.au/triumph-beautiful-slhouette-strapless-covertible-black
This is the best bra ever. I wear it every day even when I don’t need to wear a strapless bra. Nice shape and stays put!!
Thank you for sharing Margaret! :) xo, Caroline
I love this post and just ordered the nude strapless bra. I am nursing my third baby and just read elsewhere that “nursing” strapless bras aren’t very good, but a regular strapless bra with padded cups can be folded down to nurse. So I’m really excited to try this one and be able to buy tops that require a strapless bra!
Synthetic panties are not supposed to be good for our health (though they are preferable while working out). Does anyone have recommendations on super-comfortable cotton panties? I always preferred bikini cut but maybe I should try hipsters because they do look more comfortable.
With the cute black bra, do you prefer the lace or lace trim? Love it, and the racerback is cute too!
One more question: have you ever done a post on pajamas? I’m thinking of getting a Banana Republic nightshirt, they have some cute cotton ones.
Thanks for another great post! I found your blog after discovering the capsule concept and it is my favorite fashion blog.
Thank you Ruth, that is such a nice compliment with so many fashion blogs out there! :) With the black bra, I prefer the lace trim, but they are both so pretty. And in regards to a pajama post — I’ve never done one, but a few people have mentioned that they’d like to see one. So I’m definitely thinking it will be on the blog one of these days! :) Thanks for checking in! xo, Caroline
Hi Ruth! I just had to comment when I saw that you prefer cotton panties because I do too and I think we are one of the few here. :)
I like the Gap Body cotton panties but I recently tried some from Natori that I really like and are really cute, and they are on sale right now in the Anniversary Sale: http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/natori-bliss-bikini-3-for-36/3021575?origin=category-personalizedsort&fashioncolor=PINOT%20RED
And not to be too repetitive, but I am obsessed with Gap Body Cotton Poplin Printed shorts for sleeping. http://www.gap.com/browse/product.do?vid=1&pid=199856062 And they are always releasing new colors. I have them in four colors! They are so comfortable and cute and long enough that if someone sees you in them you won’t be embarrassed haha.
Thank you so much for really going for this post! It was so refreshing to hear about simplicity going beyond just clothes. You wrote this so tactfully and with such poise. I have been having such problems with finding undergarments that I LOVE and that are comfortable to me. Thanks again for the post!
I’ve been using a diva cup (and with a fairly heavy period) for over a decade. I don’t usually need any backup. Much easier than separate panties.
Just ordered some of the VS Easy bras. They are on sale for $25! Free shipping till Friday. Thanks for your post!
Score, Nora!! :) xo, Caroline
what an awesome post! thank you so much for the tips! I want to organize my stuff very soon! I started with the clothes to keep, donate and sell and then the underwear, make up etc… so fun!
The patagonia undies are my go-to for travel as well. They dry super fast, so I wash them in the sink at night and hang to dry in the hotel room. I survived 3 days when my luggage was lost on vacation because I had an extra pair in my carryon!
Also just ordered two VS Easy bras…$25 & free shipping! Was in desperate need of a new nude bra since I wear the only one I have nearly every day and it has gotten pretty grungy.
Mirelle! Woohoo! That’s a great deal :) xo, Caroline
This post was a perfectly timed post for me. I’ve been putting off (& dreading) shopping for intimates. I’ve been a busy mom who has gone through three pregnancies, along with nursing & weight fluctuations & my boobs have changed! This was just the inspiration I needed to get to the mall & update my lingerie drawer. I would recommend to any other women who are needing new intimates to have someone check your sizing. That was my main problem. My entire drawer was filled with bras that fit at one time, but didn’t work any longer. I was *shcoked* when I was told my new size (& I had even followed tutorials online & *thought* I knew my current size). I had the amazing sales staff at Nordstrom fit me & purchased a few bras & also purchased one of the VS bras you recommended. I’m so glad I made a trip in store rather than trying to order online for this task.
Thank you for sharing the link to your everyday bra! I’m still wearing my nursing bras and my “baby” is almost 2 years old. I couldn’t find a wireless bra that was comfortable, small enough, and lightly padded, but these look like they may work!
Have you tried any of the wireless styles from Uniqlo?
Hey Caroline! I bought a couple of the bras from VS on sale for $25!
I was checking out the Laundress delicate wash you mentioned on EWG’s guide to healthy cleaning and it gets an F rating. Just wanted to let you know, and there are a bunch of other great options to try for something more environmentally friendly with fewer health concerns.
Thinx + Diva Cup has CHANGED MY LIFE. I own every style of the Thinx panties, and love them all. My boyfriend even things they are sexy, so that’s an extra bonus!
This inspired me to make a shopping trip to Patagonia :) Question, what did you do with the bras you purged during the streamlining process? I feel like bras are too personal to donate but also too expensive to just throw out. Suggestions?
Hi Kim, there are a few different routes you could go. I’ve seen bras at thrift stores, so people do buy secondhand intimates. And I know women’s shelters are often in need of things like that. Another route would be sending the bra somewhere like the Bra Recyclers who take back gently used bras, to help keep them out of landfills and make use of the clothing fibers. You can mail your bra in or drop off + it’s a tax deduction. Lastly, you can donate to foundation like Bras for a Cause, who support breast cancer survivors. All very good options and better than just tossing them! :) xo, Caroline
This was such a great post! I need to reassess my lingerie drawer badly, but keep avoiding it. I keep wearing the same VS panties that I don’t really love, but I’ve just bought out of habit for years . I’m going to check out the Patagonia ones. I recently bought a pair of ExOfficio panties to try out for hiking and they were great! Totally agree that the moisture-wicking is a game changer. And the IKEA organizers is genius (can’t believe I’ve never thought of that!) Thanks for the ispiration ;)
I love ExOfficio. I wear them out swing dancing and never have to worry about funky moisture under my fancy dresses!
I just wanted to also say how much I’ve learned from your blog and how great it is that you’re back! I picked up three of those Easy bras today, two racerback and one push-up. As a 34 DD, they were still incredibly supportive and comfy! Bonus: they were $25 and came with a free pair of underwear for each one. The cashier had to double check that she had the right promo because she didn’t quite believe they were offering such a good deal haha! I hope you and your family are well. Thank you for the great recommendations and advice!
MC — Oh my gosh, what an awesome deal!! :) xo, Caroline
Random question: do you have non-black underwear for light-colored bottoms/dresses or do you just not “do” light colored bottoms? ha. I honestly had never considered going all monochrome with my undies, but I do love how streamlined and classic is. My only concern would be white jeans, etc.
Hi Austin, I really don’t have any light colored bottoms at the moment, so I haven’t needed anything other than black. If I did find some pants or skirts where the black showed through, I’d likely pick up a pair of my favorite Patagonia thongs in nude. :) xo, Caroline
Love your blog and have really simplified my wardrobe. What a great idea to put sports bras with gym gear! I will be doing that tomorrow! Thanks again.
Caroline, thank you, thank you, THANK YOU for this post, and specifically the strapless bra tip. I’m getting married in October, so this is the perfect opportunity to revamp my undergarments/lingerie. Specifically, I have never had a strapless bra that wasn’t either totally pointless or a very bizarre shape on me, and of course I have picked an illusion neck wedding dress. Last night I tried on the wacoal bra you recommended, and it’s perfect. I can’t wait to give it a road test, but hooray for looking like my natural shape!!!
As a fairly small-breasted girl, I have recently discovered liberation from underwires and bra cup ridge lines with these Warners bras: http://m.target.com/p/simply-perfect-by-warner-s-women-s-invisible-wire-free-bra-ta4011/-/A-13773891, which are available at Target, and I often find at TJ Maxx. I wear them every single day and feel like a million bucks because they don’t show!
Thanks for sharing these tips, Caroline! It’s funny I was just purging and organizing my panty drawer today! Also thanks for bringing up THINX – never heard of em and can’t wait to try it out! Sounds like a life changer! :)
I love my Thinx! They are super comfy. I still use a tampon on the heaviest flow day, but I love not having to worry about leaks. I highly recommend them.
Thank you so much for this post! I already have a great knicker drawer thanks to the intimissimi basics (for european girls) but had no bras that were both comfy and sexy. I ordered the Victorias secret ones you recommended and they are game changers! Free shipping and no import taxes was an added bonus :) x
Could I ask how you are able to cut out the underwire without messing the actual bra up? I used to always wear underwire and then I bought a bra without the underwire and my LIFE WAS CHANGED lol. Would love to know how you attack the underwire issue!! :) Thanks Caroline!
This post was so timely as I was desperately in need of some new underwear, and was wanting all black as well. Normally I’ve been cotton-only for panties, but decided to give the Patagonia ones a try, since they claim breathability. So far, so comfortable!
I’ve got some black 95% cotton bikini panties on the way from another brand I am exploring as well, so now I am wondering about longevity. I suspect the Patagonia panties will last longer. How long do you find you can wear them before they need to be replaced, Caroline?
Also, very intrigued by the Thinx discussion going on here. I’ve been considering them or something similar to back up my Lunette cup. I’ve already referred back to this post maybe three times. On that note, I’m in the UK, so I am not sure if there is a way for me to support this site through clicking through on affiliate links. If you know a way, let me know!
Deserae — Hm. I’m not sure if I have a typical answer to that. My Patagonia pairs are going super strong and some of them are a couple years old at this point. I do hand wash them (or if I’m super busy, I toss them in the wash in a lingerie bag on a super gentle cycle) so that they last even longer. So far, I haven’t needed to replace them! :) xo, Caroline
Oh Caroline,
You seem like such a pal. Thanks for yet another fantastic post. I found your blog right after you began your hiatus, savored every post from the capsule experiment, and shouted for joy when you came back. I continue to read and learn and enjoy :)
I’ve completely converted to THINX and recommend them to anyone who will listen…despite the potential awkwardness. It’s funny, when I first heard about them I thought, “Oh my! These totally sound like something Caroline would use.” I’ve never had an issue with them, even on the heaviest days and recently read that many women have used them successfully post partum. As someone earlier mentioned, the Hipsters are the best in terms of comfort, and I really like the Sport as well. You said you prefer black panties, but if you ever went for a nude colored one they do line those with black…keeps things seeming even tidier.
Anyway, this is so much longer than I meant, but you write like a friend and I can’t help responding like one :)
That is so sweet, Annamarie! Thanks for being a pal :) xo, Caroline
Hi Caroline + Fellow Un-Fancy Readers:
Can I just say? Thinx are absolutely, 100% the greatest creation on EARTH for women since birth control. I work as a construction project manager, and spend a lot of my time on job-sites. A lot of the time I’m on road trips for work moving from location to location, and I’m _rarely_ doing these things with other women. Let me tell you, trying to explain to a room full of already-misogynistic construction workers that I need to change my tampon so we need to break? Not going to happen. And those men rarely need bathroom breaks, so the more I go the more I seem like an exception rather than the rule. Changing my tampon in a sketchy on-location construction portable? Not pleasant. I’m in the process of awaiting a Mirena implant so hopefully I can cease periods altogether, but in the meantime I use Thinx. I’ve been using them since November and they’ve been absolutely life changing for me! Plus, I’m _so_ over the guilt of tossing tampons and their packaging. Better for the environment, so much more comfortable, and worry-free! All women must try them!
Bought the wireless Victoria’s Secret Bra in black and it arrived yesterday…my question is, how many days can I wear a bra in a row without it becoming weird because I AM NEVER TAKING IT OFF!!! As always Caroline, thank you for the spot on insight.
the easy twist push up bra is sold out online! :( </3 i contact VS and they don't know if or when it will be restocked. i'm heart broken. i hope they do bring it back. wasn't it a new item?
ox
Hi Melanie! They were a new item — people just loved them so much that they sold out super quick. I’d bet money they’ll restock them or at least bring them back in a similar version. :) xo, Caroline
So needed this post. Sorting out all my knickers today as I only wear a fraction of them.
Going to have to leave the bras until I finish breastfeeding and FINALLY work out what size I’ll be post baby. Will have to stash all my feeding bras in the loft ready for the next kiddo though! Have subscribed! X
Hi Caroline, If you don’t mind me asking, how many pairs of every day underwear do you own? Both in thongs and regular undies.. and how does that work for you in terms of how often you do laundry or when you go away on week long trips etc?
I hope this isn’t too personal. I just came upon your website and I am LOVING what you’ve been doing. I’m finishing the last load of laundry as I type so I can look at every single piece of clothing I own :)
Hi Deniz, I’m trying to keep it around 10 pair of everyday undies, but you just gotta do what feels right for you :) Good luck! Have fun with it. xo, Caroline
Another positive for Lunapads, Lunapanties, and the Diva Cup– most of my friends, my sisters, and I have been using nothing else for years (I started in 2004, yep, really, and still have some of the same Lunapanties, in fact). Being able to change out liners is a game changer for the really heavy days, especially if cramping makes the Diva Cup seem a bit too ambitious. Highly recommend their design, and their customer service is second to none.
I have a rather personal question about that nude strapless bra. I’m usually a 32 DD cup and never wear strapless because they slide down. This bra looks fabulous, but what size are you?
Caroline,
Do the Patagonia Hipster briefs create an underwear line?
Hi Katie, I never want to risk a panty line, so I’ve never worn them with tight bottoms, but I would suspect they would leave a bit of a panty line. They aren’t advertised as “no show” and they do have a seam, so I think they would show with tighter or thinner bottoms. :) xo, Caroline
Thanks for sharing the info about THINX. I will certainly look into it as a alternative.
I completely agree about keeping my sports and sleep bras with their like items. When I was pregnant with my daughter I went from an A cup to a D before she was even born. I couldn’t afford multiple bras so I just bought two of each size. It forced me to get used to the idea of owning less bras.
After she was born I no longer fit in all my old bras. I thought, “wow! How could I own soooooo many”. I must have had over 20; darn victoria’s secret clearance sales. So now I own about 8 total; 3 nude, 1 nude strapless/convertable, 1 black strapless/convertable, 1 grey and two black. Sure I could get away with maybe two less, but it helps when I can’t get to laundry right away. Also, in this drawer I also keep random bra items like those adjusting hooks like these:

and fashion tape.
My curious question to you Caroline is, when do you know to throw out or replace your bra?
We just put together our new IKEA dressing and I was trying to tackle underwear storage yesterday. It looked so nice and calm in that drawer until I put my sports bras and lounge bra in there as well. I’ll definitely switch to your approach of separate drawers according to use. Also very curious about those period undies. As a European, I had never heard about the concept before!
Loved this post. Just wanted to share a brand of underwear I purchased from etsy, called econica, handmade in Canada and I think her styling would be totally up your street. She’s perfect for us girls with less going on up top who still want something exceptionally comfortable and simply beautiful. Thanks.
Hey Deborah! Thanks for sharing :) xo, Caroline
Just had to chime in! I’ve been using Thinx for about three months now and absolutely love them! I have a pair of hiphuggers, cheekies and a thong all in black (I’m a black kind of girl too). They are all super comfortable and perfect for different days of my period. I’ve completely ditched my tampons and panty liners too!
Now I just need to check out some of your bra recommendations! I haven’t replaced any of my bras in over four years so I could definitely use a bit of an overhaul!
Thanks for giving us a peek! I’ve capsuled my closet and have been tackling my bras especially- very hard to do when you go through pregnancy, nursing, etc. twice! I ha e way too many different kinds and just now ready to narrow it down.
A few of your VS links are broken- I’d like to make sure I purchase via your links to support so please let me know if they’re back up and running anytime soon!
I believe VS no longer sells that bra!! It’s my favorite, and I’m still on the hunt for a replacement. Any suggestions?
I would love to see a post like this on your swimwear! Number of items you have, organizing , washing, etc.
How do you organize the rest of your drawers? I’m struggling between the like for like and practical and am getting so frustrated ?
Hi Caroline!
Thanks so much for this post, I’ve been coming back to it as I organized my underwear drawer. I’m just wondering if you also handwash your underwear, or just your bras? How do you care for your patagonia underwear?
Thanks so much! I love your blog
What a great post! I’m sorry I just discovered it now, and curious to know what bras you like, as the links are no longer available :( Thanks again!
Thanks for this amazing post!! My underwear drawer has given me chronic anxiety my whole life but these tips are so great!!! I’m all about trying new ways of organizing and I’m loving the idea of moving workout stuff together and lounge stuff together– makes way more sense.
THINX IS THE BEST THING THAT HAS EVER HAPPENED TO ME! I thought it was so gross but then I tried it and it’s heaven. They also make workout shorts now!!
Hi there, this is wonderful and lovely! Do you mind sharing what the white drawer organizers specifically are? A link would be much appreciated!
Thank you,
Dipika :0)
My sister tried period type panties and liked them. I personally use a menstrual cup (Currently use a Diva Cup but want to try the Lunette or Lena) and a reusable pad for backup on my heaviest nights as I don’t wake up in time to emptyit. I need a really long one as for some reason my blood ends up in the front and back but not in the middle. I have a completely different size for bras. At my maximum size I was a 34KK and post reduction I’m either a 34H or 34HH. Not sure as I don’t currently have any wired bras. I have bad memories of wires trying to stab me. I prefer wireless bras as that’s all I’ve worn for the past eight years. I love Decent Exposures which has lots of customization options. They make a scoop neck strapless, and racer back pull on or front closure bra in various fabrics depending on how much support you want. I needed to down size for them to fit me. I should have fit the 34L according to the size chart but found a 32H fit me better. Post reduction the 32H is too loose a few inches so I likely need a 32E now. They even make half sizes and girl sizes so they can fit from the largest to the smallest. I’m wanting to try the Breast Nest as since there’s no lift there’s no sweat. It’s the bane of my existence in the Spring/Summer. It’s not like the rest of my body. When I wash the sweat off the rest of my body the skin is normal. When I do the same for my under bust I get itchy and red scaly rashes so I would gladly sacrifice lift for no sweat just as I traded scars for a smaller size. Also want to try the Bra 30 which offers 3 styles – a cropped tank style, a regular tank, and an extra long tank. From what I heard they lift via compression and there is sweat so I’d use them in Fall/Winter. The prettiest though is my size range is the Polish brand Ewa Michalak. Alas I can’t get a payment out to them since Paypal won’t process my orders from there and I have no idea where to get the other type of payment they would accept from me. My poor sister is large cupped like me but needs under the band sizes offered so she’s told her size doesn’t exist.
I love your site and your thoughtful approach to clothes shopping. Will you be doing another post on underthings?? Some of your links are outdated and the items are no longer available.
Bought the wireless Victoria’s Secret Bra in black and it arrived yesterday…my question is, how many days can I wear a bra in a row without it becoming weird because I AM NEVER TAKING IT OFF!!! As always Caroline, thank you for the spot on insight.
