Guys. It’s capsule time! :)
Yesterday, I posted a quick capsule refresher and how my approach has changed over the years. If you missed it, definitely go back and give it a read first.
So back to today! In this post, we’ll look at:
- My spring wardrobe
- The planning process
- Capsule by category
You ready? Let’s jump right in — here’s the whole thing:
THE PLANNING PROCESS
Process: Planning this time around was easy-peasy. I’m chalking it up to years of practice. But! Since I’m not setting my wardrobe in stone or taking a 3 month shopping fast, there was so much less pressure to get it perfect — which felt amazing. I simply edited down to my favorite pieces, knowing I could change them out as needed. Yep, I think this whole relaxed capsule-ish thing is going to work out just fine. :)
Color palette: My favorite thing about my capsule? This color palette! All the heart eyes! I’ve been wanting to build on my mostly blue color palette, and that blush and cognac ended up complimenting those blues beautifully. I think it could be a good all year round color palette — it’s got the springy pinks, but also that warm cognac color for fall.
Lifestyle: My lifestyle is super casual. I live in a small town and work from home, so the jeans and tee thing works for me most of the time — even for date nights or patio drinks. However, I threw in a few silk tops and chunky heels for those times I want to dress up a bit more.
Weather: The weather in Texas in spring can be all over the place, and I won’t hesitate to grab a coat out of storage if I need it. However, I’ve got enough layers in this capsule that I’d probably be fine without a coat. If we happen to have one last freeze, I can throw on a base layer + sweater tee + wool coatigan + jeans + ankle booties + wool socks + beanie and be set!
CAPSULE BY CATEGORY
Let’s break it down by category. If you see a piece you like, you can shop it and support Unfancy at the same time by using the links below. This keeps Unfancy ad free, and allows me to devote more time + energy to it (which I love to do — thank you for making it possible. It makes me so happy to share this stuff with you guys!).
BOTTOMS: INITIAL THOUGHTS
It’s no secret I’m a denim girl. It’s pretty much all I wear. So I just went with it, and included four pairs of jeans, one pair of overalls, and two pairs of shorts.
Each one had to pass a comfort test — they have to be comfy enough for a Netflix-on-the-couch night. And I’m happy to say, almost every single one passed! The only exception is my mom jeans — they aren’t quite broken in to that point yet, but they’re getting there. Have a look:

07 | Black shorts by Madewell | similar (under $20)
08 | Black skinnies (old) | similar (made responsibly) | similar (under $40)
DRESSES: INITIAL THOUGHTS
Next up? Dresses! Dresses have started playing a bigger part in my wardrobe. They are just so darn comfortable and easy.
This time I included five dresses — although I’ll probably add another dress or two as the season goes on.
I’ve got lots of different shapes + silhouettes here, from classic sheath to a romper to a flowy boho minidress that I can’t wait for you to see in real life. It’s a little out there for me, but it’s just right for those days when I’m feeling … out there. :)
Anyway, including different silhouettes helps me get more out of these dresses. None of them are too precious, so they cover a range of occasions, from hanging out with my nieces and nephews to a fancy dinner out. Have a look:

OUTER LAYERS: INITIAL THOUGHTS
Even though I live in Texas, and it’s mostly warm, we still get some crazy weather swings in the spring. So I’ve included a super warm wool coatigan and a cashmere cardigan (the oatmeal colored one), along with some lighter layers.
Honestly, I’m a little on the fence about the knit vest and the jean jacket. At this very moment, I’m not feeling them. But I went ahead and included them anyway. If I haven’t worn them in a few weeks I might put them back in storage for a little while. They’ll feel right again one day, and I’d never let these gems go — but storage might be right for the moment.

SHOES: INITIAL THOUGHTS
I’m hitting the cognac color pretty hard in the shoe department, but I’ve also got a bit of grey, black, and white to round it out.
Most of my shoes are flat because, comfort. :) But I’ve also got three pairs of heels to dress things up when needed. For spring weather swings, I’ve got four pairs of open toe shoes and four pairs of closed toe shoes. Have a look:

TOPS: INITIAL THOUGHTS
I wanted to add more pattern and more of that pink color to this category, but I haven’t found the right pieces yet. In fact, the pink tee is actually just a placeholder — I haven’t found one I love yet. So I’m playing the waiting game. You’ll be the first to know when I find it. :)
Other than that, I’m really happy with this collection of tops. I’ve got silk pieces that can be dressed up, a few long sleeves for chilly spring days, and plenty of comfy tees for everyday. Have a look:
01 | White tee by Everlane (made responsibly) | similar (under $20)
02 | Silk cami by J.Crew | similar (made responsibly) | similar (under $20)

There you have it — my spring capsule-ish wardrobe!
What do you think? Does that color palette sing to you, too? Got any questions about why I included a particular piece? Ask away in the comments and I’ll do my best to answer them.
And hey — there’s still a ton of fun stuff coming this week. On Thursday, I’ll share a tour of my closet + chat wardrobe organization. Then on Friday, I’ll delve into some capsule Q+A including how my capsule works for weather swings.
See you Thursday!
xo,
Love it! What do you think of your Everlane tees? I’ll admit, I bought a striped long sleeve tee from them a few months back and I don’t love it. However, my husband has several button-downs from Everlane and they are his favorites. He would wear them daily if left to his own devices.
My white Everlane v-neck is my all-time favorite t-shirt. What I’d like to know is does anyone else get tiny holes in their Everlane and Madewell tshirts? Happens to all of my shirts – I think it might be from the button on my jeans rubbing against the shirts. Really hoping this doesnt happen to my beloved white v-neck!
Could it be snagging on your countertop when you wash dishes or are in the bathroom doing make-up? We had a countertop in our first apartment that I realized was the culprit for causing holes in a few of my shirts right where it rubs up against he countertop while doing dishes!
I think tiny holes are mostly a quality issue. Some t shirts I’ve owned years back would only get tiny holes after wearing them for like ten years. Lately I will get tiny holes after just washing and wearing twice. And I hand wash and air dry—no dryer! I run into this problem a lot at Loft and lately I’ve had it at the Gap with some of the T’s that have rayon in them. It’s very disappointing.
Tiny holes often come from washing with anything that has a zipper on it, like jeans, shorts, or a jacket. Always zip your zippers before putting them in the washer.
This very same thing happens to me. Lately it has been my favourite grey v-neck tee from target. I am going to try to take a thread and darn it gently. But from now on I’m buying better quality shirts.
Yes! I really want to love the Madewell whisper tees, but the quality is poor. All of mine have lost their shape and gotten holes. My hunt continues!
Check out Grana.com’s tees. They are really thick, soft, and affordable because they follow the everlane business mode. I have NOT taken care of mine (throw them in the dryer, wear them to sleep) and they still look just as good as the day I bought them.
I second the Grana tees! I love my long sleeve I bought over Christmas. They have a great blush option right now too, Boyfriend Crew Neck Tee in Rose Beige.
Wish Granna made my size :(
SAME. I have a great mustard-yellow madewell tee that has little holes in it. I guess it’s the material? I had similar problems with some lightweight “tissue” tees from other companies.
The holes come from the button on jeans and/or the plastic from the car seatbelt. to prevent it you can tuck in your shirts or wear a long tank underneath (for the ones that come from the jeans). I like Boden double layer tees. They have a really nice v neck back or round necks.
I actually have three of Everlane’s basic tank tops and eventually they all started getting tiny holes in them and have lost their shape. I machine wash/hang dry. I still wear them casually, but it’s harder to dress them up now.
I blame the holes in my tees on the little plastic knob on the car seat belt. I’ve started keeping a small towel in the car to put between the seat belt and me and have had no problems since then.
It’s the washing machine that makes tiny holes. If the excellerations are to high (english is NOT my first language so I hope you understand).
Well if it set to high/fast it sucks the shirt in and makes the tiny holes. If you wash it on delicate you should be able to avoid them.
This is a bit late but I get the same thing and had presumed it was the button of my jeans rubbing on my t-shirts too. But, I actually think it’s from catching it in the zip when getting dressed/rushing out of the bathroom etc. Sounds odd and not something I’d notice happening – as it breaks free when you pull the shirt down to straighten up but think that then breaks the threads so a hole develops over time.
I really like Everlane tees for the most part. I’ve had a few misses with different fabrics and styles that come out, but their basic v-necks are my absolute favorite. They also have a boxy crop pocket tee right now that is awesome with high rise jeans. Their cashmere is the BEST! Ok I’m getting off track…
I almost wear Everlane tees exclusively as far as my regular tees go. I haven’t tried their linen but their u-necks are fantastic.
I was hoping someone would bring up the u-neck! I haven’t purchased anything from Everlane before, but my eye has been on those tees. :) Thanks Janelle!
I have one of the t-shirts and don’t love it either. I really want to love it because it’s so soft, but the fit is just not amazing.
Hey Kate! So far I haven’t had any issues with them. I wash them on delicate and hang dry, so I think that helps them last a little longer and keep their shape. :)
Mine all have holes too! I was on delicate and lay flat to dry. :(
I like the u-neck and v-neck and haven’t had trouble with the quality. My only complaint is that at 5’10”, they are far too short to wear with anything other than high-rise pants.
Caroline, I love the concept of a capsule wardrobe and I’m wondering how I can apply this to my own life style. As the mom of a 3 year old and a full time teacher, I need a balance between dressy and casual. While my school is a fairly casual work environment, I try not wear denim more than twice a week. And as you can imagine, all of my clothes need to withstand the messiness and unpredictability of a toddler. Any advice would be greatly appreciated :) Thanks!
Hi Celina,
I am a teacher too and have two capsules that kind of overlap: one for work that includes nicer shirts, cardis and 2 blazer like jackets, and one with every day clothes. I am allowed to wear denim at work so that overlaps, as well as shoes and simpler tops like tshirts that I wear underneath my smarter jackets.
Hope that gives you any ideas!
Hi Livna, you got such great advice from these ladies — I love this community! Hope it helps. :)
I’m a full-time teacher (and mom) giving my first capsule/project 333 a whirl. We cannot wear jeans to work, so I have 2 jeans, 1 legging in my capsule for “casual”, 4 pairs of “work pants” and 1 skirt for bottoms. It helps that when I get home each day (if I’m not going back out), I put on loungewear/pjs. That keeps my clothes fresher longer between each wash.
Another capsuler-teacher here–I’m like Lauren (if I’m home, I’m in sweats). I think it’s ok to have a different, small loungewear collection and my horse-riding gear is another little collection. It’s gotta fit my life and there’s NO way I’m cleaning house, working, and riding a horse in the same set of clothes. I’d ruin my nice, work clothes with one barn trip. So, I rock it my own way. ;0
I want all of you to know that teachers and mothers are our nation’s heroes as far as I’m concerned. And y’all are doing it style? That’s amazing. You guys are an inspiration to us all. If you are ever in Austin, please contact me so I can take you out to dinner!
When I first started a capsule, I was in the office 5 days a week and we can only wear jeans on Fridays. So I have chinos and cords for work, but I also realized that a capsule worked best if you can create as much overlap as possible. For example, I wear t-shirts that I used to wear only on weekends with a blazer or cardigan to work and I wear my nicer sweaters on the weekends now.
Yay, looks great and so you! I cleaned out my closet this weekend and filled out your wardrobe planner. Working on putting my capsule collection together this week.
I have a question for you – usually I shop at target and old navy, but I want to get more into buying quality pieces. What brand(s) do you think I should check out for casual tops, like tees and blouses? I dont have a huge budget and I initially feel kinda sticker shocked haha
Thanks in advance!
Laura @ http://www.thriveorsurvive.us
For t-shirts, try Everlane (I love my V-necks) and for blouses try thrifting. And definitely don’t feel pressured to replace them all at once! Both the idea of capsules and the idea of investing in quality clothing encourage a slow process rather than buying an all-new batch of clothes. :)
I love Sundry (at Anthropologie and Nordstrom) and Current/Elliott t shirts (also at anthropologie and Nordstrom). I check those brands out on Ebay a lot, too. You can find them in excellent condition, second hand and for a lot less. Both are made in the USA, too :)
With two kiddos 3 and under, I live in tees and jeans/ leggins!
Hey Laura, I agree that Everlane is a good place to replace basics. They are not too expensive and their clothing is made responsibly. :)
Caroline- love the post! There is a new basic company that I’m LOVING so far. Based out of Nashville called thread-co.com – give it a check!!
But also I’m a huge everlane fan :)
That is amazing you still kept it to around 37 pieces. Love the flexibility of capsulish . I’m in Seattle area so our spring is very rainy. Thank you for sharing your wardrobe on here. I missed seeing your style ideas for mixing things up.
I love that you included multiple similar options at different price points! I think it helps those of us at different levels on the clothes journey!! Love the color palette and your new approach. I actually just used a line of yours the other day when something went wrong and I felt like I had completely failed. I stopped and said out loud “how fascinating!” :)
Morning- I am going to use this guide and go thru my closet first…then shop with purpose! Plan the work and work the plan. Works for our home decor too. So simple! Looking forward to your closet tour….I know it will be inspiring. – Laurel
I LOVE this and I love the color palette too, it is very similar to my preference except mine might be more black even. I love the little graphics you made!
Kirsten // http://www.porkandcookies.com
I’ve really missed your capsules, Caroline! I’m not this structured anymore, but it really helps me to see your thought process. I’ve already purchased three tops for Spring and I don’t think I will need anything else. But we just got our first significant snow since December. I may change my mind when it’s really Spring. :)
I love this! You’re inspiring me to try a capsule wardrobe (and I’ve been wanting to for awhile) but I’m just so indecisive when it comes to picking and choosing what to wear and what to put in storage. I like that you put rules aside and are going more with what is right for you. I am definitely going to give this a try!
YAY! I’m loving the 5-color palette! Just enough to get punchy when you need to, but not so much that you loose the cohesive, interchangeable feeling of your blue/black/white base. Awesome!
I’m also super impressed by the variety you’ve included. I was just going to write that this “larger” more fluid capsule really does feel freer than the super-structured limited-number capsules…but there’s still only 39 items! So bravo to you for amazingly creative planning!
I can’t wait until the crazy Kentucky weather gets warm enough for me to get my spring capsule together!
https://everydayjoys.blog/
I’m so glad you’re doing a capsule like this again! I think this is my favorite capsule of yours ever. Then again, that might just be because the color palette you choose is the color palette of my life. ;) I’ve take a break from capsuling for a couple seasons now, but you’re inspiring me to put a bit of effort into it again. Thank you!
yay! so happy it is here!! LOVE that you are adding pink/blush…it is going to look beautiful with your skin tone, hair and alllll that denim <3
I must admit I love what you did with the colors.
And also the way you picked the items, diversity and courage in a minimalist way. You kept your originality in this capsule and I like that.
For me, the items are to summer-ish, as the weather in Romania is rather cold than Texas, but it s a nice way to inspire myself from this list and pick what works for my spring and not fantasy spring.
Question: Is this an open capsule? meaning if you get bored for some of the clothes, you go and store them and bring new stuff instead? or you are trying to work them out like in a 10×10 challenge, being creative with each of them?
Also, the storage of the other close comes in handy when you want to reach them or do you have it well stored just to grab it when the season ends?
Hey Andreea! yes, I suppose you could call it an “open capsule”! I’m trying to go easy on the rules, so I will start here and do my best to be creative, but I’ll leave open the possibility to make changes along the way if something isn’t working. And for the storage, I use 2 plastic bins that are fairly accessible if I need them. :)
I just love your blog! I did the 333 project for winter a couple of years ago and loved it, but never kept up with it. Not sure why. My wardrobe got too big and crazy again, so I’m ready for round two, and after searching many blogs for inspiration, yours is the one that spoke to me. I’m so excited to follow and learn. I’m glad you aren’t so rigid. I think that’s one reason I didn’t keep it up. Your colors and capsule are beautiful! Thank you!!
OMG i had withdrawls from your unfancy capsules when you moved to the north then you came back and after losing my baby sis to breast cancer i prayed for your mom…i loved you instagram on the house reno…but honestly i have never more excited to see this again…thank you from my hotel job in nyc blizzarxd 2017 Ann!
Caroline! You have almost the exact same palette that I’ve been working with all year ’round :) …. Love, love, love these colors and how they mix and match. I’m an older version of you (57) and also work at home, so a great deal of your blog fits me perfectly. Keep it up! It’s great and very enjoyable :)
I immediately loved the “boho dress” you’ve included here! I had not heard of Christy Dawn items before… but I better start saving cuz I want allthedresses now :) can’t wait to see the outfits you make from this great capsule!
Don’t you love her stuff?! All the heart eyes. And it’s responsibly made too! :) Thanks, Kate!
Love your color palette ! I organise everything in a very similar way, capsule wardrobe idea is amazing

I found a lovely blush tee just this week at my local southmoonunder! It has that nice lounge fit….
http://www.southmoonunder.com/sanctuary-short-sleeve-peplum-tee/183948.html?cgid=tees&dwvar_183948_color=PINK&start=9&dwvar_183948_size=5
Madewell has a really nice blush casual t right now☺. Love this piece, thank you!
Looks great. My only change would be to change the cream/beige sweater to one in chambray or blush. Those colors look amazing on you and would give you more interest and new looks.
I love the color palette!
I’ve never heard of “coatigan” but I absolutely love it. I also realize that where I live in CA, winter coats aren’t necessary but coatigans are really what I live in all winter!
And I’m sure the denim jacket will make it’s way back around. I just pulled mine out of storage because it’s finally warming up in these parts, and realizing it’s the only jacket I want for spring. Yay for falling in love with items you already own!
Yay, so excited to get a peek at your spring capsule and I can’t wait to start seeing all your lovely outfits too!! I’m doing a capsule this spring and ready for lots of inspiration!! And love that you’re feeling less pressure / not swearing off shopping. For my first capsule, I didn’t shop but then felt really rushed to build and buy the things I needed… which just felt like too much pressure and took the fun out of building my wardrobe and ultimately discovering my style. Anyway, before I babble on ;) excited for this Caroline, it’s going to be a great spring on un-fancy!! xo

Hey, I have a quick question.
When I purchase something through a link, can I add other items from that site or will it lose your commission? I really love this capsule!!
Hi Kay, that is so sweet of you to ask!! I think if you purchase other stuff, it’ll be fine :)
I love your capsule! My style is very similar and everything I wear needs to be comfortable. I would love to buy more responsibly made clothing, but my clothes are always at risk of getting stained at work (I’m an esthetician and massage therapist). Are there any out there that are slightly less expensive? Are there any brick & mortar stores you could recommend? I like to touch & feel fabrics before buying. Another thing I love about your capsules is that they don’t include a bunch of accessories. I feel like most capsule wardrobe or mix and match wardrobe bloggers include tons of accessories to change up the look. It has taken me so many years to realize it, but I am just not an accessory person. I can’t stand having a hat, scarf, belt or sometimes even jewelry on. Thanks for sharing your ideas! I love your blog!
Mostly curious and apologies if I missed this in the post! What pieces are new additions? I’m interested in the reflective process as to what you brought in, why you did, how you organized that process and how much you opted to spend. (Those questions are just food for thought, and not anything for which I expect direct answers!) Deciding what to buy is admittedly what I find most interesting about wardrobe planning; how and why we choose to bring in new pieces. Kind thanks.
Great call! I would also love to see what is new and what is existing for previous capsules. I recognize a few items from posts past but I’m sure I am missing things.
Thanks for sharing, Caroline! I always look forward to your posts and savor reading them.
Can you share more about the BRYR clogs? I have been admiring them on-line for a while now but am a bit hesitant to order them without trying them on, as they definitely are an investment and I don’t live anywhere near their studio. How do they fit? Are they comfy? Do you feel they are worth the investment? Are they something you find yourself reaching for over and over? Do they hold up well? I am all about fun shoes and clothes but they also have to be comfortable and convenient. :-)
Hi Marta! I love both pair of my Bryr clogs. They are comfortable and functional and great handmade quality. They seem to run true to size. For me — since I do wear them so much — they are worth the investment. :)
Marta – I found the BEST clogs by Toms and wore them everywhere last year because they were so comfortable. They are sold out everywhere, but Amazon still has them. The sandstorm color is perfect. It’s actually lighter than what Amazon shows, so if you can google them, you’d see what they actually look like. Highly recommend as a more affordable substitute! https://www.amazon.com/Beatrix-Clog-Sandals-Sandstorm-10007984/dp/B013CFYMA8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1489666339&sr=8-1&keywords=toms+beatrix
Thanks, Caroline! Sold! Just ordered a pair of Clementine high heels in tomato nubuck. :-))
Thank you so much, Carrie! I will definitely check them out too.
Hey Caroline. I have a couple Q’s for you.
1. Would you mind letting us know how you store your seasonal (or maybe) items? I am specifically interested in how I should store my beautiful new winter sweaters/coats.
2. Accessories (bags, hats, jewelry, scarfs, etc). I am so curious what you have in this department, and honestly, how many items.
3. Affiliate links. I just want to make sure I use them correctly so that you benefit from all your hard work. Say… if I click on a link that you have associated to a specific shirt, but I decide the cut isn’t right for me and I browse the side and purchase a different item instead, do you benefit? (Thanks for clarifying).
Thanks for all that you do. The world appreciates the beauty you bring.
Hey Tara, thanks for the questions! I’ll address some of these in upcoming posts! As for the affiliate links, I think it only works for the specific item I link to, but no pressure! Thank you for asking :)
Oh I’d love to hear about accessories too!! Trying to pair mine down to the ones I actually use/wear!!
Love this!! I always enjoy clicking through all your pieces to see what sort of options are out there (especially the ones that are a little bit more affordable!). This capsule is amazing! It inspires me to show more love to the pieces in my closet that I truly LOVE and feel okay to pack away some of my not so loved pieces. Thanks! Love your blog!
How did you break in those flats? I have a brown pair and they just kill my feet.
I love this capsule. Looks so cute (wish I could bring it home haha).
Hey Caitlin! I understand your pain! I had to use moleskin padding on the inside of the shoes to break them in. It works as a cushion around the areas that pinch/rub, so that helped a lot! (http://bit.ly/2fRK0fl) You can cut it to size if necessary. :)
I am in love with this capsule wardrobe! It is honestly my dream wardrobe because you dress how I try to dress, comfy and still cute! Ever since I found your blog I’ve wanted to create my own capsule wardrobe and this one is inspiring me so much that it’s finally time! I love the addition of blush and cognac into your color palette too. They are the perfect pops of color that still go well with everything. I’m really excited to see how you start to style all of these pieces!
http://www.blissfuljaqui.com
I have a question. Would you share how many items that could be considered spring appropriate you left in storage, and maybe why you choose to keep them but not include them in this capsule? Are you confident you will want to wear them in the future?
Thanks for your inspiring spring capsule post!
I’d love to hear more about your storage size and inventory as well. How do you determine what to keep in storage and what no longer deserves to have space in either your closet or your storage? When do you know it’s time for something to go?
Great question, Bronwyn.
Yes to this! And do you bring everything out when turning your closet over? Or do you just happen to have everything catalogued because of the blog?
I mostly have fall/winter vs. spring/summer together, but noticed this past fall some items were truly more fall vs. more winter so almost had an early vs. late items. I do this with my holiday decorations too, so maybe that just makes sense to me — the stuff to pull out first (soaps, candles, etc.) to get the season started during the transition and then a bigger group of items when you totally turn over…interested in your approach!
Beautiful! And I am so inspired to pair down my own wardrobe for the season!
This looks great! It is almost exactly the color palate I am going for in my spring wardrobe except I will be using black in addition to little bits on congac in the shoes. I am excited to see what outfits you can put together with all of these items.
Also, I may have missed this, but what do you constitute as spring? March through May? I’m having a hard time right now because I want to complete and use my spring capsule but it is currently snowing. Then in 2 months it will be 95 with 90% humidity. Thanks Missouri :(
Oh Hannah! This wild weather, I know. It’s nuts. I seem to follow the actual seasons. So my Spring capsule starts mid-March and I’ll make a few changes for Summer in mid to late May. But that being said, I don’t think there’s any “right” way to do it. If your seasons are crazy, just go with it. Don’t force your capsule into a seasonal box if it doesn’t work, you know what I mean? Dress according to what is best for your current situation (and not “fantasy Spring”). Good luck! :)
Hey Caroline!
Great capsule! I too have been looking for a perfect blush tee! Here’s one I have my eye on, thought you might like!
https://twoson.co/collections/women/products/two-son-vintage-tee-in-rose
That looks so comfy Becca! Thanks for sharing. :)
You’re on a roll, Caroline! I’m loving your posts even more than usual as of late. I feel the energy and excitement with this capsule and I can’t wait to translate some of your thoughts into my own wardrobe.
Oh boy I’ve been waiting for this for awhile! Love your style and the colour palette you’ve chosen – so pretty.
I wish my wardrobe could be as simple – like some commenters above I have the work clothes – overlaps – regular clothes of a teacher!
Thanks for inspiring all of us!
Just a practical question, do you have a formula for the right proportion between bottoms and tops?!
Thanks!
Hey Flavia, I’ve had a few different methods for this. When I first started, I followed the rule of threes. You can read about that here: http://bit.ly/2mJQ52u. Now I’ve been doing it so long, I don’t necessarily have a formula, but I’ll do what feels right. And leave the possibility open for little changes along the way if it doesn’t work. :)
I have been following your blog for a couple years now and love the flexibility you are implementing with your capsule. One thing I have changed/added to my capsule is a year round grouping of basics. There are some items I wear all year long (a couple solid colored t-shirts, my skinny jeans, black leggings, a few nice camisoles) and I keep them permanently added to the mix. Keeping these items around every season has given me more freedom choosing seasonal items and has made the experience more pleasurable for me!
Love it!! Great post. I love the colors and PRINTS! That boho dress is super cute. Can’t wait to see how you put together some of the pieces you haven’t showed before in outfits. Lots of transitional pieces with a mix of class and comfort in each one. Thanks for sharing!

Hi Caroline! I have been following your blog for about a year now, and love your style, as well as the whole concept of a more intentional wardrobe. In addition to paring my closet down, 2 years ago I made a commitment to only purchase clothing items that are secondhand or, if purchased new, made in an ethical and sustainable manner. So I was really happy awhile ago to see you address the issue of fast fashion and shopping in a responsible manner!
But I’m a bit confused now…. You seem to purchase a lot of new items every season, for one; but more concerning is that so many of these new items are still from brands like Madewell/J. Crew that, while maybe of higher quality and therefore longer lasting, are still not manufactured in a responsible or ethical manner. For many of these items that you purchase, you list links to similar items that are “made responsibly” – but if you know that those options exist, why aren’t you purchasing those instead? I believe you have even more responsibility in this matter than the average person, because your purchasing decisions have the potential to affect the purchasing decisions of so many of your readers.
I have been able to find beautiful, like new items on sites like eBay and Tradesy from popular brands like Madewell/J. Crew. And there are so many other great ethical brands to support! Granted, searching out some of these brands and pieces takes more time and sometimes patience in waiting for the right piece…. But it’s so worth it! :)
Thanks for your lovely articles and outfit inspiration, I’m looking forward to what’s next! :)
Hi Jonessa! Thanks so much for your input and your questions. My personal experience with shopping brands that are made responsibly is currently a steady work in progress. I did not take an all-or-nothing approach with it. I decided to start small, working on shoes and bags first. It then expanded into my denim purchases. And while 100% of my purchases right now may not be responsibly made, I firmly believe that small changes over time will eventually lead to big changes. So I continue to work on it and find a happy medium with what I have and what I want. Some of these things take time, and I’m ok with that. Thank you again for the thoughtful comment. I’m excited to share more with you all as I continue the journey. :)
Hi Caroline,
You’re absolutely right about small changes leading to big changes over time – and, absolutely, every little bit counts! :)
Here are some suggestions for more peach/blush items:

I love Amour Vert, Modern Citizen, Zady, and People Tree; Nudie Jeans and Industry Standard NYC are great for sustainable and ethical denim.
Thanks for being so open about your fashion journey! :)
I’m so glad you showed us a capsule again, super excited to see it!
I’ve been waiting for this! Looks awesome so far!

This is such a great post. I have been following your blog for at least two years now and you’ve inspired me to slowly whittle down my wardrobe over the years, though I’ve been far from a capsule. For the first time, I feel like a capsule is doable and realistic for me. I love how you chose a color palette and the number of items in your capsule feels really realistic to me. I can’t wait to get started on mine this weekend. Thank you so much – you’ve made a real difference in my world.
I love it! And I am so glad you are including capsules again with the thought process behind your decisions. I feel like I learn something about my closest and my wardrobe every time I read your posts. Keep up the great work!
I’ve been experimenting with capsules for almost a year now and I have a question – what do you do when you have purchased something and it turned out to be a total flop or you didn’t even end up wearing it? I have made a few bad purchases and now feel bad about tossing them because I paid money for them.
Hey Larissa! Trust me, it happens to the best of us! If the item is a flop, I will look at it first and try to figure out why. If it’s a fit issue, I will take it to a tailor first to see what they can do. If it’s a good quality item that I’m just unsure about, I will put it in storage for awhile and see if it feels fresh the following season (or following year). If it’s really just a piece that I know I will no longer wear, I try to give it to a friend or donate it. You could also try a consignment shop or selling online to see if you can make a few dollars back. Hope that helps! :)
I love seeing your whole capsule all together. I’ve got a very similar color palette for my spring capsule too. I can’t wait to see how you style everything!
This color palette makes me SWOON! Winter had me feeling a little gloomy, so I added a few pieces to my closet from storage the other day in an effort to freshen things up. When I stepped back I realized it’s no wonder I’m tired of everything I’ve been wearing because my entire closet is so dang dark. I’m trying to find some creative ways to thin things out and lighten things up without breaking the bank – this broke college girl still needs to make it a few months to graduation! I’m thinking I might try to gather the courage for my very first 10×10 to see what I can create…
Can I ask how you set-up your capsule collage? Every time I take pictures with Stylebook, I’m not able to edit out the background. Do you use another app?
Hi Jen, I use Photoshop for the collages. :)
I LOVE it! That blush colour is the perfect addition to the neutrals you’ve got and to me, this is a far more versatile and practical capsule than some of your earlier ones that were more restricted. This is going to be so fun!
I’ve had trouble finding a white tee that isn’t sheer/see-through. Anyone have a favorite they’d like to share, or tips on combating “bra-show” through the material? Flesh-colored bras help, but still show a bit. Up to now I just wear them as an under layer, but with warmer weather on the way those layers are going bye-bye.
Hey Sorilea, hope you get some good recs! But that being said, have you tried maybe a cream or off-white tee instead of stark white? It might hide the bra better! :)
Oh, the cliche…they don’t make ’em like they used to. : ) L.L.Bean has some pretty decent tees
Oooh, thanks! I’ll check them out!
That’s an interesting idea, thanks!
Really excited to see your Christy Dawn dress!
SO happy that we can finally see your capsule again! mine is more colour and less denim, but anyway yours looks great! But I have one question: how come you don’t include any skirts? I think they would be a great way to dress up in combination with some of your tops. Perhaps a pencil skirt is too formal for your style, but a denim skirt or a black flowy skirt would fit in well in my opinion :)
So glad to have you back! Seeing your capsule has me excited to start thinking about my Spring one again. I’m a navy blue/bright color kind of spring girl :)
I am LOVING this capsul(ish)! Beautiful soft colors, a mix of patterns/materials… looks like you’ve got a lot of versatility in this one. Great job! I noticed that you didn’t include your Sseko sandals. Do you mind sharing if you just needed a break from them, or if you are going for a different vibe for spring, etc?
Hey Taryn, It’s a bummer — I actually loved the vibe and the footbed was so comfortable, but something about the straps fit my foot weird. I may give them one last try this summer, but the straps turned out to be a problem so I’m not sure yet.
My daughter and I have the same size feet, but the Sseko sandals are very comfortable for her and they feel yucky on my feet! They get kinda loose in spite of the wrap and …? I’m with ya, Caroline!
Oh man! A couple weeks ago I actually pulled out all my spring/summer clothes and tried everything on and pulled out a capsule-ish BEFORE I went shopping! It was amazing, all your posts I’ve been reading for the past two years are finally paying off in how I act! Yay! Anyway, the only shopping I’ve done so far is to add a pair of vintage mom jeans (90s Guess) from Ebay and replace my chambray button down (stained) for an off-the-shoulder, swingy chambray top! My Madewell grandpa sweater that’s a dusty rose pink has managed to get a hole in the back, I’m so bummed and have no idea how to repair it. I’ve worn it every season for 2 years now.
I’m wondering what your opinion would be on packing away a business/business casual capsule if there are some clothes don’t currently fit into my lifestyle but the situation is something I hope to change in under a year? I have some really nice, classic pieces that fit great but just don’t need them in my life at the moment. I don’t want to be a hoarder but I don’t want to sell them all now and then need them again.
Loribeth – I’m currently in a similar boat, but with home things. After I got married and moved into my husband’s apartment, I put 80% of my things…and almost all of our wedding presents…into storage. We know we’re going to buy a house and move into a larger space one day, and although every minimalist fiber I have in my body hates that we have a storage unit full of things we don’t currently use, the cost in storing the items was less than the effort and cost of selling and replacing them, so the financial equation made sense for us.
Because you’re counting on using these items in the future, I say keep them for now, and evaluate the situation again once you’re closer that year mark. :)
I am also dealing with the recent home downsize for savings purposes and we are renting a very small storage unit with some family heirloom furniture that we want to have in our home one day soon (hopefully in less than 3 years). But I’m the same, it KILLS me to pay for a storage unit! It’s definitely all about weighing the costs.
Thanks for the reevaluating advice! I’m just gonna go ahead and set a notification in my calendar to remind me to think about it again within two months of my grad school graduation date.
Yes yes yes. I FEEL THIS SO MUCH. Hubs and I are saving for a home as well and I know all this angst and waiting will eventually yield the ability to afford a wider variety of home options than we can at the moment, as well as a financially stable future….but waiting is SO HARD. High five to you across the webs! We can do this!
Also, good luck with grad school – I got the grad degree 5 years ago and never regretted it! Also, with the knowledge that you’re saving these clothes for after you graduate, yes, by all means keep them! A few months into whatever career you end up in will probably tell you all you need to know about what level you want to dress at for your particular company’s culture. :)
Hey Loribeth,
After getting sick of my sweaters getting holes, I did some investigating, and it’s actually pretty easy! You can Google or Youtube it, but essentially you turn your sweater inside out, and, with thread that’s similar to the yarn of your sweater, pick up the loose stitches and pull the thread tight so that they come back together. Sweaters are generally knit, so you can find the little loops that have come apart. Hope that helps, I’d hate for you to lose your sweater!
Thank you so much for the advice Sahara! I will definitely do that!
I just always absolutely love your capsule wardrobes. Great style! :-)
Ahh, I’ve been eyeing that Cuyana cardigan for a while, but its just so expensive and not within a student budget haha. Would love to see more pictures of it and know how it fits/feels/wears though, to see if maybe it’s worth the investment after all!
Hey Elena, it really is a beautiful piece. So soft and comfortable. You’ll be seeing more of it for sure. :)
How strange is it that before I started reading un-fancy, I had never considered a color palette for my wardrobe. That concept alone is making me happy as I try to maintain my own capsules.
I’m completely obsessed, thank you for the post, I love the palette, the boho dress, the practical jeans and tees. I used to waste money on fashion magazines and now I look to your blog for tasteful, classy seasonal choices that compliment my casual lifestyle.
Love all the denim and the cognac, of course. Also, how did I not know you live in Texas?! Fellow Texan here (though living in LA the past four years). :)

Hi Caroline,
I was wondering if you had anymore pictures of when you had the maxi dresses in your capsule back in summer 14.
I am looking to pack a maxi on a trip an am looking for ideas online but can’t seem to find anything good.
Just wondering. I am searching through the archives.
Thanks I really appreciate all your inspiration.
I have been reading for a while, and I love that you include links to your items, especially the ethical brands. Grana is my absolute favorite and shopping there introduced me to the importance of ethical fashion!! They have everything from jeans to bomber jackets to lingerie to activewear now. Check them out ladies!
Thanks for sharing this post! I really liked it. Clothes and colours you chose are perfect. am all about capsule wardrobe. Regards x
As a stay at home mom with a 1 and 3 year old, and more planned soon, I find it so hard to dress my ever-changing body. I know I online shop for all the wrong reasons- hoping something new will make me feel better about my body, a way to “treat myself” after a long, often boring day…
I love the idea of a capsule and finding the perfect pieces, but honestly right now I don’t think I’ll think anything is “perfect” on this body.
Anybody relate?
As a mom of three kids I can totally understand! I have found that I have had to do a lot more work at finding things that fit my body where I am. Find a part of your body (doesn’t have to be perfect) that you like, and work it! Find colors that you love, and be willing to keep trying. Don’t settle. I am also loving the high waited jeans trend! Thank goodness for that!
Love your thoughts! Do you use photoshop to paste all items on board?
Hey Zeran, yes I do! :)
Love, love, love it! K. // Cashmere sweaters, cardigans and scarves by Krista Elsta.
Caroline, where do you get your pretty watercolour swatches for your colour palette planning?
Hey Ame! They’re from Etsy!
Hello Caroline,
I am interested in purchasing a pair of Veja sneakers but I am worried about the sizing. I am an 8 in US sizing which tells me that I should be a 39 in european sizing but I seem to run into size 39 being a bit large in other European sizes I have ordered. What has been your experience with them?
Hey Masha, they ran true to size, but I know Euro sizes can be tricky. A 39 is technically an 8-8.5, which might be why they feel large. With the Vejas, I ordered my usual 7 (38) and I’ve been happy with the fit. :)
How do you take care of your black silk dress? Do you wash it in between every wear during the summer? I’m nervous because I just got the blue version and I’m worried about it keeping it clean and fresh (especially from sweat).
Thanks!
Dana

Great post very helpful! Thank you
Love this capsule(ish ;))! I just bought a silk top from Everlane and it’s beautiful, but I’m not sure how to clean it. Dry cleaning is so environmentally hazardous and I don’t have any “green” cleaners near by. Any suggestions?
Thanks!
I have been trying (and failing) to rid my spring capsule of black (a year round staple it seems), so I was glad to see it in yours. Navy feels like a better transition after winter, but I just love black.
I have a question-
How do you choose which clothes to wear spring vs summer? I feel like I can re peat most clothes because Arizona is just hot in all seasons ha but I assume you try to be creative and swap some clothes for different?
T
Hey Caroline!
I really love your approach to the capsule wardrobe, and I feel that it is the most sensible out of all the others that I have researched. I am very excited to get started on mine!
There is something that I’m a bit unsure about and was wondering if you could give me some advice… I have determined that my favorite colors to wear for the moment are olive, salmon, and navy. I have favorite clothes that all fit into this category, but then I also have favorites like my maxi skirts that are super colorful. For example my one maxi skirt is different shades of blue and teal. it is one of my favorites, but doesn’t really fit in this color scheme… What would you do??
Lots of love for you and your blog xxx
Cheline
Hi Cheline! I think it’s best to look at the color scheme as a guide. It’s not a hard and fast rule, but you know you like these colors and they feel good to you. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean your entire capsule should only be comprised of 3 colors. If your maxi skirt is true love and you will wear it, definitely keep it in there! :)
These were some great suggestions for fall! I actually just read a very helpful blog post that shared capsule wardrobe essentials for winter. She even had a cute little video styling everything. I’ll leave the link if you want some inspiration for the upcoming season!
