It’s wrap up time! Time to chat about the progress I made with my summer wardrobe goals, the pieces I wore the most, and the lessons I learned.
Just in case you missed the first Style Series post, here’s a quick recap:
I learned so much about my style from my capsule experiment, and I’ve been wanting to explore the concept in a less structured way — something practical that honors the heart of it while being free to flow as life changes.
Since I don’t keep a structured capsule anymore, the Style Series is essentially version 2.0 of my capsule posts. There are no rules, no full list of every single thing in my wardrobe. Instead it’s all about my style concept for each season — my closet goals, my inspiration, my favorite pieces for the season, and my uniforms.
Let’s see how things went these last few months!
GOAL PROGRESS
GOAL 1 / Bring a little pattern into my wardrobe / I found my sweet spot when it comes to patterns this summer. I’m not a bold pattern girl, but I sure do love simple, small patterns — tiny diamond patterns, stripes paired with a classic bandana print, embroidery on the hem of a dress. Looking at that collage above, I see so much fun pattern, even though it’s on a small scale. It reminds me that I don’t have to go extremes to incorporate new elements (like pattern or color) into my wardrobes.
GOAL 2 / Let loose and enjoy dressing for the season / At the beginning of summer, I got a little tripped up by the idea of “saving” clothes — AKA not wearing them out of fear the I would get them dirty, wear them out, etc.. But about midway through, something clicked and I totally let loose and just started enjoying everything I had in my closet. It was way more fun than saving things for a special occasion.
GOAL 3 / Rewear and restyle / This was a personal success, although you probably couldn’t tell from the total of just 12 outfits I posted this summer. More on this in just a minute, in the Lessons Learned section below.
GOAL 4 / Declutter my undies drawer / Smashing success! I ended up writing a whole blog post about creating and organizing a useful panty drawer.
GOAL 5 / Unsubscribe from retailer mailing lists / Another success! Unroll.me is a godsend.
MOST WORN PIECES
This was such a successful summer when it came to my wardrobe. Almost everything in my closet was a “most worn” piece, but these five really stood out:
From left to right, top to bottom:
STRIPE BUTTON DOWN / Made of the lightest weight fabric, this shirt kept me cool even in the triple digit days. Thank you, breezy shirt.
OVERALLS / similar / I added my overalls pretty late in the season, but they feel like a part of me now. :) Nothing says “Don’t take it too seriously” quite like an adult in overalls. My favorite thing about them? They don’t squeeze around the waist / tummy area like pants can.
SILK TEE DRESS (old) / similar and similar for under $55 / I’ve never been much of a day dress kind of girl, but 2016 marked the year that changed dramatically. This silk tee dress in particular kept me cool in the heat, while making me look put together — even when I didn’t feel like it.
CUTOFF SHORTS (old) / similar / I don’t think these even made a blog appearance, but I wore them all the time when I was just around the house.
ROMPER (old) / similar / Although this romper only made one appearance on the blog this summer, it was perfect for just about every outdoor hangout, road trip, and even some fancier occasions. It’s not really one of those pieces that can be styled a million different ways — it still looks generally the same no matter how you style it. But even though it’s not versatile in that sense, it’s still versatile in that it’s appropriate for a whole lot of occasions. A good reminder that there’s more than one way for a piece to be versatile.
CLOGS / similar for less / It took me a while to start wearing these regularly. I got into the whole idea of “saving them” like I mentioned above. But once I let go and just started wearing them, I couldn’t stop.
LESSONS LEARNED
Lesson #1 / Looking for white? Make sure to get a sturdy fabric and forgiving shade of white.
Whites are tricky, because I love wearing them.
But I sure do wear them out quickly.
As in, my white silk camisole that I love so much looks like it’s going to be ready for retirement soon due to sweat stains after just one summer. As a person who tries to make her clothes last a long time, this really bums me out.
So, in the future, my goal is to stay away from delicate fabrics, like silk, in white. For my lifestyle, it’s just too hard to keep.
(Black silk, on the other hand, is my jam — my black silk tee dress made the most worn list up there and it’s going stronger than ever.)
I also need to pay special attention to the shade of white. Even just a little texture or heathering makes a big difference when it comes to a long-lasting white. For example, my cream Everlane texture tank is in great shape, even after a spring + summer of heavy wear.
Lesson #2 / More outfit posts
This is more of a blog lesson than a wardrobe lesson. But I’m excited to share it with you!
Pre-hiatus, I was posting 20 outfits a month, and you got to see the same piece styled in new ways over and over again. Now, I’m posting less than 8 outfits a month, and you barely get to see any pieces repeated.
Less outfit posts mean you don’t get to see the full styling potential of each piece. The general mix + match + repeat vibe has been kind of lost lately, huh?
That vibe was one of my favorite things about Unfancy. It’s time to bring it back. So, starting mid-September, you’ll see more outfit posts a week.
These outfit posts will be short — not a lot of text, but instead, focused on giving you a simple outfit idea for the day, and showing different ways to style the same piece again and again. And don’t worry, I’ll still share plenty of in-depth feature posts too like packing posts, the undie drawer post, and the online shopping guide.
How does that sound?

So that’s a wrap on summer!
There won’t be a post on Monday, since it’s Labor Day, but next Thursday will be a lot of fun — it’s the Fall Style Series! In the meantime, let me know if you have any specific questions when it comes to fall wardrobe planning or fall dressing. I’ll try to address ’em in next Thursday’s post.
Your turn! Did we have any “Most Worn Pieces” in common? What you think about seeing more outfit posts around here? Did you experience success with your own wardrobe goals this summer?
xo
So excited for more frequent outfit posts! I love seeing the variety of combinations from just a few pieces.
Also THANK YOU FOR SHARING UNROLL WITH US! This is changing my life.
Hey Maria! Glad it’s working out for you :) Looking forward to sharing more with you guys! :) xo, Caroline
Thank you for sharing your lessons. Very practical tips.
My goal for the summer is to find my style. As I grow older, my wardrobe evolves with me. It’s a reflection of my life. As my life is going through transition again, I am reworking my wardrobe big time. Of course, with less and more versatile pieces.
Looking forward to your fall post. I’m always in love with your style photos. :) Please keep them coming.
Hi Kasey! I love your goals. Since we are always transitioning and evolving, it’s great to continue setting new ones for ourselves. :) xo, Caroline
YAY to the return of regular outfit posts! THese really have a way of getting my style juices running, without causing contentment issues. When all I see is new items…ooooo I just want to run to the store!
FALL series – hurrah! It’s so hard to think breezy chilly thoughts while it’s sooo hot. How do you get in the fall mood while planning? I am concerned my fall plan won’t end up being weather appropriate.
Hi Lyn! I’m glad you’re excited! And it’s so funny you bring up the “too hot to plan a realistic fall wardrobe” thing because that happened to me with my Fall 2014 wardrobe! You can read about it here — check out #4: http://www.un-fancy.com/outfits/fall-outfits/fall-wrap-up/ I’m doing my best to make sure that doesn’t happen again this year. :) xo, Caroline
I’m very excited about more outfit posts. The pieces that got the most wear this summer were washable linen tops in black, grey and an indigo stripe, a washable linen midi dress in navy, a black rayon knit dress, cotton slub t-shirts in grey, charcoal, indigo and white, and crop pants in blue denim, white denim and black twill.
Hey Carol!
Nice to meet you. I’ve been on the lookout for some good linen pieces, specifically tops, and wondered if you’d mind sharing where you got your beloved ones from? Any sizing tips? Thanks so much!
-Christine
Hi Christine – The dress and two of the tops came from Land’s End and the other top, which is a linen/cotton blend, came from L.L.Bean. Both web sites have very accurate size charts. I’m 5’1″, so I purchased everything in petite sizes.
I agree, Christine! LOVE my charcoal and ivory linen tops from Everlane!
Great post, Caroline! I also had a moment in the middle of the season when I realized I needed to stop “saving” certain pieces. A tip for your white tops – wearing deodorant instead of antiperspirant stopped me from getting sweat stains altogether, but I recently purchased a white tank secondhand that had stains and found this method worked wonders: http://www.popsugar.com/smart-living/How-Remove-Sweat-Stains-31003483
Looking forward to fall!
THANK YOU!!!
Hi TJ! Thank you so much for the tip! :) xo, Caroline
Hi Caroline, love your blog so much! I have a fall question for you. I bought a really pretty fall blouse at a consignment store recently and I can’t wait to wear it. It is in shades of taupe and soft brown, but it is kind of sheer/see-through. A bra would totally show through the fabric. Is that the intended look for a sheer blouse like this one? To wear a bra, knowing that it will be completely visible? If so, what color bra? Nude or color? Or should I wear a camisole under it? It has a deep peephole built into the neckline, so the cami shows where skin normally would. Thanks! Heideh
Hi Heideh! I think it really depends on your style. For me personally, I don’t like my bra to show through, so I’d probably wear a cami underneath or a nude bra if it didn’t show up too much. But I’ve slso seen plenty of women rock a bralette or a bra with pretty back detail under a sheer blouse (it’s very European!) so I think it really depends on your comfort level. :) xo, Caroline
Thank you! i think because of the deep opening in the front, I will try a nude bra first.
I am excited for more outfit posts! And incredibly excited for the fall features! I adore fall! Or Autumn as we call it over here in Scotland! :)
As someone who doesn’t wear trousers, favouring skirts or dresses, I was really surprised when this summer I practically lived in my Capri gym leggings! Short enough to be cool and show a little leg in the sun ;) but practical enough to wear when running around after children at work and a life saver when out on long summer walks to prevent the dreaded thigh chaffing :( obviously my leggings are fun bright colours and patterns to pair with a plain vneck tee. Easy.
Thanks so much for sharing.
I’m so glad to hear your outfit posts are coming back! I always admire the way you can restyle each piece. I’m that boring girl that finds one way and sticks with it for life.
One thing I’d like to note is your blurb about being bummed when a shirt doesn’t last past a season. I feel you on that. I try to make things last a while – and end up trying to wear it less often – but always fail because I feel like that is the gateway to me going back to ‘saving’ things for special occasions. I combat this by buying multiples of the same thing or realize that this fave tee of mine will probably not make it past the season and be prepared to replace it next time. For me, when I start worrying about making things last, I get too into my head about finding the perfect piece and getting mad at myself if I spill something on it. So I try to stop and realize that the item served its purpose. I guess I can’t get too mad when I shirt that I wear 4 times a week falls apart after 3-5 months haha
I take the lesson to my capsule wardrobes and it has helped me get full use out of all my items :)
Sincerely, Tania
I tried deleting my Unroll.me account and like others have had a terribly difficult time doing it. No luck. Please consider whether you really want to do this.
I FREAKED out when I read that you “save” pieces too… I will see something in the store, buy it because I’m absolutely obsessed, but then when I get home I don’t even want to wear it because I’m scared it’ll get stained, dirty, etc.
I told my mom about this recently and she said, “If you’re paying that much for a piece of clothing, you better be able to wear it!”
Duh. Silly me!
Anyways, can’t wait for next Thursday! Happy first day of September!
Don’t give up on that white silk top. Try the stain remover bar from The Laundress. They have all kinds of suggestions on the website on how to remove stains.
Thanks Patricia! I’ll check it out :) xo, Caroline
I second that. The stain bar from The Laundress is amazing. In particular, I love the section on their website dedicated to answering questions about laundering, especially the one on how to remove pit stains! It kind of changed my life, I can wear as much white as I want. :)
Ok So I am all upset because I just finally let go of a perfect creamy white silk buttondown b/c it had armpit stains that I couldn’t get out. Literally kicking myself now. Oh well – the fit was perfect but come to think of it, I am looking at a little more lose fitting blouses these days.
Esther, oh darn! Keep this for future reference though! :) xo, Caroline
I live in Scotland, and we didn’t really have a summer this year. It was “hey, rain” or “ooh, what variation, rain + wind”. I didn’t do a capsule, because I wanted to pay close attention to what I was learning about my style and my practical needs so that I can implement them in my first capsule, September-March, with what looks like being 45 pieces. My main lesson? Listen to the weather. In particular this summer, I was reminded that there’s no point having dedicated summer clothing when however much I might wish it, it’s just not necessary and won’t get worn. I need enough to layer with year-round, which is why I’ve settled on two six-month capsules with a slightly higher number of pieces in them.
It’s also been the season that I’ve noticed the trickle-down effect of my decision to stop buying anything that’s not an absolute necessity (bras etc) first hand, unless it’s by a small independent designer. My most-worn pieces were probably my favourite, incredibly well-fitting jeans (Paige Denim Laurel Canyons, a lucky thrift find), my brown heeled platform Doc Martens, a dark green fitted wool jacket (vintage), and a navy and white polka dot smock dress from The White Pepper (second hand).
Ooh, your plan is the same as mine has been, probably because your weather is similar. I’m in Seattle and have been doing one capsule from late Sept-March, with a few of the lighter pieces being put away around December when it gets too cold. I also have more items, probably just under 50 when counting outerwear.
Love the idea of more remixed outfit posts!
My most worn pieces also included a breezy striped short sleeve button up and my Madewell solid chambray courier shirt.
I have a few white pieces with sweat stains that I’m bummed about too, so I’m looking into dyeing them a dark color to cover up the stains, and I believe silk is something that takes dye well. Maybe your ivory cami can be reincarnated as an indigo cami!
Great idea Laura! Thanks for sharing. :) xo, Caroline
I am a huge fan of salvaging old or stained pieces using RIT dye. Have had so much trouble with white clothing, so I rarely buy it anymore. Just the occasional white tank and t-shirt. White socks are also taboo around here, hate anything dingy that isn’t transformed with bleach!
So excited for more outfit posts! I missed your blog so much while you were gone!
Katie! Aw that’s so sweet! i’m excited when you guys are excited :) xo, Caroline
Loved your wrap up and am looking forward to the fall pieces! My biggest head scratcher for fall is flat ankle boots (I know, I’m late to the game). But I’ve moved to a different city (and different country!) and my beloved heels have got to go. Too much walking, cycling and taking the train. So any hints on that would be delightful! Thanks!
Hi Amy! There are so many good options for flat ankle boots out there, it’s hard to narrow it down.
I would look into Everlane for a sleek option (http://bit.ly/2ccGlIC)
Or if you like a sturdy lace-up, Frye is a great product (http://bit.ly/2bFLZpV)
One last suggestion is maybe an oxford, since they look great with so many outfits. I’ve hard all good things about these (http://bit.ly/2c4xgV0)
Hope you end up with something you love! :) xo, Caroline
YAY to more posts on remixing. That was one of my favorite aspects of the blog, and I was a bit sad that it seemed to have moved away from that. So I’m happy to see it come back :)
Hey Amanda! I’m happy about it too — it’s exciting to share when you guys are excited! :) xo, Caroline
Yay! more outfit posts will be great. Your blog has been so helpful to me and I always look forward to seeing a post.
I have had good success with white vinegar removing both sweat stains and also deodorant residue. I hand wash my silk items so I would likely try to see if I could remove the stains before donating an item. If it isn’t successful you can go ahead and discard the item knowing it was a lost cause.
Hey Bronwyn! Thanks for the great tip! :) xo, Caroline
Definitely looking forward to more outfit posts! And to see how you’ll style your outfits into the cooler weather :)
xo, Marie
Hello! Can’t wait to see your fall post and more outfits! :) I have a question-ish… I’ve read here before that you’ve said summer is your most “you” season, wardrobe-wise. And I feel the same! (I live in easy/breezy dresses and comfy sandals or booties.) But I live in the Midwest where it gets very cold and I have trouble feeling “myself” in the fall/winter (which is essentially Novemeber through April haha). I’m also terrible at layering! So I can’t wait to see your fall round up and would love some tips on how to incorporate that breezy/comfy/a little bohemian/etc. feel into the cooler months. I still look back on your old outfits for inspiration too! :)
Caroline, I am wondering if you ended up with any summer purchases that just didn’t work for you and if you might share any thoughts on that. Even though I am being a lot more careful and thoughtful when shopping I still end up with a couple of things that just don’t work for me the way I hoped. Do you have any tips that you have come up with that help eliminate this.
Caroline, I’m very interested in this topic too! Love your blog and I’m very excited for more outfit posts.
Liz
So excited for more outfit posts! Although, I love all your blogposts :) I had my eye on the white cami you posted about all summer, so I appreciate your comment about it’s durability.
I work in a business-casual environment, so my most worn pieces there were two dresses (it was crazy HOT and HUMID this summer- no pants for this girl!) – both don’t wrinkle and could be worn with heels or flats. For home/play, my most worn pieces were denim shorts and a white v-neck cotton tee I bought earlier this year on ThredUp. Call me boring, but they make me perfectly happy and feel put together.
Looking forward to your fall post next week! Have a great weekend :)
Loved this post! I really appreciate your blog! You inspired me to look into a capsule wardrobe idea and when I got pregnant last year, I thought buying maternity clothes would be a good time to start and I loved it. Now my body, although it weighs the same as before, is totally different and I’ve had to start over almost completely. I wanted a wardrobe that works for my new body and new life as a stay at home mom, without sacrificing my personal style point of view. I have also wanted to start investing in ethical and responsible companies. All this to say, your blog had helped guide me in both these efforts a great deal, so thank you!!
Hi Emily! Thanks for the kind comment!! I’m so glad the blog has helped you during such a big transition in your life. Looking forward to sharing more :) xo, Caroline
Hi Caroline
First and foremost i Love everything unfancy. Go you. Looking forward to the Autumn capsule and more outfit posts. I am trying to go towards a more capsule approach and i have been clearing out my closet. Im just wondering what your approach is towards choosing shoes? I have found out i am the owner of 5 pairs of black boots but cant part with any. A post on this would be great. ?
So happy that you will be posting more outfits! I really really miss the daily outfit emails. I would look forward to reading them over my morning coffee it was my little ritual (one I missed while you were on break, but I understand your need there :).
Something I struggle with SO much, especially living in the south is transitional and weather appropriate outfits. Here in NC it might be “fall” but we get temperatures into the 80s pretty much until November hits but I still crave jeans and sweaters. Another issue is that it will be cold in the morning but hot in the afternoon! How do you dress for that kind of nonsense?? Would love to see a post or even just a few tips talking about that!
Hi Sydney! I feel your pain! I think this is why I have struggled when it comes to dressing for cooler weather and why summer is really my niche! I will be exploring this more, so stay tuned! :) xo, Caroline
I find fall wardrobe preparation tricky. For the whole September, it is not yet time to unpack my fall pieces due to warm temperatures, and then October hits, and the weather is so unpredictable that my tiny shelves (I have two of them for tops and bottoms – folded according to KonMarie philosophy) get really crowded. BTW, I live in Boston area.
I’m definitely excited you’re going to be doing more outfit posts soon! When I first discovered your blog those are what really drew me in and showed the potential of a limited wardrobe.
My favorite piece to wear lately have been Madewell Flea Market flares. I’m so happy that flares are back but so much more stylish than when I wore them in middle and high school. I think a longer length and heels makes a huge difference.
Trying to get my wardrobe ready for fall but it’s so hard to stop dreaming about the next piece even when I know I have enough! Also, have you heard of Poshmark? It’s an app where you can buy/sell used or new clothing and it’s been awesome for me to sell stuff I just don’t love and be able to afford stuff that I’m crazy about.
The return to outfit posts will be a welcome one, as they inspire me to remix my own wardrobe in new ways. This summer, I lived in a couple of Meridian Line tees that I bought locally and loved. I’m in a transition period right now, and that has timed up with a lot of my clothing wearing out. I rarely think about it, but I’ve had a lot of my clothing for 10 years or so and it’s lasted so well until now. I am now in the position of shopping for new clothes to replace old standby pieces at the same time that I feel my style changing with this transition. It’s both an opportunity and a source of trepidation. I want to make good choices and also honor the new me that I haven’t completely figured out yet. I’ve been thrifting as a guilt -free way to bring in some low cost pieces for experimentation, so I’d love to see more posts with vintage/thrift items you might discover for the fall.
Thank goodness! So happy you are going to be posting more outfits to show how you style pieces throughout the season. That really was the core of Unfancy and it is what sets it apart from normal fashion blogs. Anyone can post new outfits. It’s wearing a piece over time that is unique to your blog and what keeps things real here.
Yay! Thanks Mary! That’s great to hear :) xo, Caroline
I’m looking forward to the mixed up outfits again too. I just wish I was in the same season! I’m watching from New Zealand, where Spring has just begun. Still, it’s inspiring my Summer wardrobe planning.
Firstly, I am So glad for your honest approach, and big surprise, the same issues you’ve covered are the ones I’ve been working through. We must be twins!! Thanks to your encouragement I’m learning to dress and be happy, not being so overly preoccupied that it becomes an unholy pain! Or overthinking. I’ve managed to enjoy my clothes this season and happily have stored them for rollover next Spring! Secondly, YES!!! Sorry for shouting but we are all delighted that you’re bringing back the visual remix cues. I loved seeing how you put together your full wardrobe and felt there was a gap, not knowing what else you work with. Nonetheless, your mail AlWAYS makes me smile and try to give it another go. Lastly: admitting mistakes and not repeating them is a great move to progress! And Letting go is a winner attitude.
Hanni! Woohoo! It’s ok to shout, I’m just as excited as you are! Thanks for the support :) xo, Caroline
Hi Caroline,
I really like your idea of including more outfit posts again. Styling one piece multiple ways is a great skill to have with a small wardrobe, and I learnt a lot from your older outfit posts!
Thanks too for your honest and thoughtful text posts. I especially like the theme of personal growth that you weave through your blog. I’ve enjoyed reading some of the books you’ve recommended, they’re both challenging and grounding.
I think, too, that I might start my own blog soon (I’m just starting out as a science writer). I can now appreciate the courage it takes to put your own ideas out into the world! But, I’m really excited about it.
All the best, I look forward to your next season of posts! :) x
Thanks for the kind words, Alice! :) xo, Caroline
My “Summer Wrap up” was more fun than my last Fall wrap up because my three year old daughter helped. We both tried on all my tops and played around in my tiny closet. We ogled ourselves in the mirror and even when through my Jewelry. We had a great time. But, in the end, the only thing leaving my closet was the one tank top that I had been unsure about at the beginning of the season.
It is inspiring to read your posts and what you have learned about yourself and your style. It took me a year to find the shift in my style. When I was pregnant with my first daughter, I told myself I wasn’t going to let being a mama change my style. But in the end, I felt like a different person and so my style and my clothing changed as I changed. It has taken me a bit to accept that and then it took me a bit to re-discover my new style as a mama. But, overall I have found having a capsule or a smaller wardrobe has been the key in understanding my own style. I love it and I can’t wait to continue to explore and grow in my wardrobe.
This summer the biggest thing is I wore purple. I have always loved it but never worn it for various reasons and so I am glad I finally made the leap.
My question about fall fashion is I always end up wearing a very specific uniform (Pullover Sweater + Skirt or Pants). It is comfy and I love wearing it. But, are there any variations or adaptions to maybe spice a great uniform like this up?
Hey Rebekah! Thanks for your comment! I love hearing how other people are making their style work for them, big lifestyle changes and all. To spice up a uniform, I think adding a simple element — like a special piece of jewelry, a pair of unique shoes, or even a simple vest/jacket — can all do wonders for a basic outfit. Hope that helps! :) xo, Caroline
This stain remover has been a God send for me and my wardrobe. http://www.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2011/11/goodbye-to-yellow-armpit-stains.html
It does waaay more that getting out sweat stains. I have used it on a variety of stains and on a variety of fabrics. It has saved a lot of whites in my house. I have not tried it on silk yet, but if your tank otherwise is at the end of its life, it might be worth a shot!
Hey Laurie! Thanks so much for sharing! I’m glad all hope is not lost! Ha :) xo, Caroline
Honestly, I’m just so happy you’re back blogging, Caroline, I’m happy to take whatever you give us! ;) Your outfit posts help me be creative with what I’ve got and intentional with purchases, so I’m all for more of those!
One thing I struggle with in fall and winter is dresses. I’m seeing so many cute and casual fall dresses now, but everyone is bare-legged! It’s cold and rainy in the PNW, and bare legs just don’t work for me. I find it challenging, though, to know what kind of tights/leggings to wear with what dresses and with what type of shoes. Sure could use your help there!
Amy
Hey Amy! We don’t get much of that rainy cold weather in Texas, but I adore the look of dresses with tights and booties. You can’t go wrong with opaque or textured tights (like this USA-made option: http://bit.ly/2bXi5w9). I think certain outfits even look cute with tall socks layered underneath knee-high boots. I bet you’d have some luck if you searched around Pinterest a little bit. And hey, if it gets cold enough here, I might add this to my outfit ideas for a post :) xo, Caroline
Yay for the return of your outfit posts! Thank you so much for incorporating that back into your blog. I know how much time it takes to fix up a photo shoot with clothes, which is most of my battle, and I’m just photographing the clothes by themselves, let alone wearing outfits! And yippee for your Autumn style series too – will give me some inspiration for next year :)
Weird question: Do you by any chance use a deodorant with aluminum? That might be contributing to the rapid yellowing of the white silk camisole (or maybe it’s just the camisole if this isn’t an issue in general). Thought I’d mention it because yellowing of white shirts used to be a huge problem for me, but it went away once I switched to a non-aluminum deodorant! Thank goodness, because white tees are one of my mainstays!
Hey Alice, I kind of go back and forth, but I guess I do tend to reach for the antiperspirant in the summer time. I will keep that in mind as I’m testing out more natural options. Thanks! :) xo, Caroline
Great post! I’ve learned a life-saving trick to keeping whites white, and it might help you. Trisodium Phosphate (TSP) can be found in powdered form in a $10 cereal-sized box in the paint aisle at Home Depot. Add about 1/4 to a load of whites (it’s safe for colors, too). It’s a heavy-duty (yet gentle) detergent. Maybe give it a try sometime! :) Dingy whites are a thing of the past!
Hey Alyssa!! Thanks for the tip! I’ll look into that too :) xo, Caroline
Hi Caroline, your blog has been a life changer for me. I’ve always had the vision of a perfect and well organized closet but your blog has inspired me to act on it. I am a new mom so it is taking longer to look through the pieces I have (some for a really long time) and see if they still fit my style and my new size. I am finding that I have some really nice pieces I bought over the years which just don’t fit now but they are in great condition (some of them not worn much). Do you have any tips on places/websites to sell clothes vs donating them?
Hi Esha! I’m so glad you are having some success in the wardrobe department!
You should try a local consignment store. You will probably just have to search for what’s near you to find the best ones. For online selling, ThredUp is a great option. They will send you a bag to fill and send back to them, then they pay you a small portion for the items they keep for resale. Another good online option is Poshmark. Lots of buying and selling going on right there on a little app, and you choose the price you want to sell for, unlike a consignment shop. :)
If you do go the consignment route, keep in mind that appearance of the clothing goes a long way. If the clothes are dirty and wrinkled, you will probably get less for them than if they are clean and pressed. And don’t get discouraged if they don’t want the items or if they only give you a small amount of money for them. It can be a lot of work and takes practice, but hopefully it pays off!
Good luck!!
xo, Caroline
Hi Caroline! Love your style and love your blog. I feel like I truly know my style sense now, at age 31, and I always feel confident and comfortable in my clothes.
I’ve recently changed my life and became a part-time freelance designer who works from home – instead of working in an 45 hours a week. My question is: how do you get motivated to dress in a way that makes you feel cute and confident, when you don’t necessarily have somewhere to go each day?
yay! SO so glad to hear you’re going to post more outfit pictures. We don’t need that much text, picture equals a thousand words and all that xo It will be lovely to “see” you more!
Super excited for more outfit posts!!
I love your post on “underthings”. I have started my capsule wardrobe almost a year ago and I absolutely love it. I have found my style or should I say refined it as well as gained confidence in it. Now I love my closet and always have something to wear even though it has about 70% less items in it. I love to wear every single one of them. It was finally time to address my underwear drawer and with some guidance of your post I was able to do it. Like you, I love black and nude and have been having a hard time finding comfortable black undies. I tried the Patagonia ones you recommended. They are perfect! It’s funny, I am a huge fan of Patagonia and owe a few of their items but have never tried their undergarments. Thanks again.
Hey Tina! That’s awesome, I’m so glad the post was helpful and you found some underthings you love :) xo, Caroline
Hi Caroline!
I don’t usually answer blog posts, but I really felt I just had to say thank you for sharing the unrollme link!!! I am in heaven! Down here in the southern hemisphere we’re heading into spring and it felt really good to spring clean my inbox :) I also will be going over all your summer posts and getting some really good inspiration for the coming season.
I really do enjoy reading your posts and I am so glad that I subscribed. I used to collect cheap clothes as my pacifier whenever I was feeling bleak, but now I am much more mindful. I simply refuse to buy anything unless I really love it and need it. It has saved me so much time, money and hassle. I also rediscovered my clothes that were already in my closet. Heaven!
So thanks for the awesome posts and inspiring fashion!
Much love,
Tara
Hey Tara! So glad you’re enjoying the posts. I’m excited to share more in the coming weeks and months. (And I’m just as grateful for unroll me as you are! Woohoo!) Thanks for the support :) xo, Caroline
Hello,
my most worn piece this summer was washed-out boyfriend jeans. Since I work at the office, we only have casual fridays. So every friday I picked up my boyfriend jeans, new balance sneakers and whichever-was-ironed top. Summers are cold where I live, so not many chances to enjoy shorts or rompers, but casual jeans really saved me this summer and made me feel good on all informal occasions.
Loved the roundup thanks Caroline! Along with everyone I am looking forward to more outfit posts so much :-)
Also (randomly) how is Margo going?

Hi Alicia, oh man, this is an emotional question for me, but thank you for asking. After she and Steve got into some terrible fights (one sending us to the pet ER) we realized it wasn’t in either of their best interests to keep them together. It was the worst! Broke our hearts. But the good news is that she’s already settled in a new home, safe and loved. xo, Caroline
Hi Caroline, lovely post, as always :) I’m looking forward to next week’s post, I need some inspiration (altough it seems summer only just started here (in Holland) and it will stay warm for another few weeks). I was wondering: which clothes will you keep from your summer wardrobe in your fall wardrobe? When you buy something for summer, do you think about whether you’ll be able to wear it in fall/winter as well? Or do you really keep your wardrobes separated? I’d love to hear!
Hi Renee! Great question :) I think it’s a healthy mix of finding those perfect summer pieces that will last for many summers to come, and finding items that can roll over to other times of year. (Like a chambray shirt or great clogs). Of course there are always certain things that will get put away for the seasons, but I figure the more I can wear one item, the better! :) xo, Caroline
Looking forward to more outfit posts. Always looking at you for inspiration.
I really liked this post! It looks like you’ve accomplished a lot this summer! I’m really exciting to see the Fall Style Series ;) xxx

I just wrote my winter lesson wrap up (I’m currently operating with the more strict capsule wardrobe approach you used originally). I didn’t set goals as such but overall I’m pretty happy with the items and my style development.
By the way, do you ever hit the wall? I find about nine weeks in I’m over that set of clothes and wishing for the next season… Any tips of what to do about it?
I was thinking of picking up some winter whites for next year, will keep your tips in mind!
Hi Alethea! Great question, and let me say, I don’t necessarily wish for the next season, but I do get excited for it! There was definitely a time when I actually worried other people would get bored looking at the same clothes over and over. But all in all, I’ve actually found quite a bit of contentment with the whole process. You can read a little more about that here: http://www.un-fancy.com/capsule-wardrobe-101/add-variety-to-your-wardrobe-with-one-little-trick/
I can totally understand how you feel that way, but maybe a little time to refocus on your goals and refresh your outlook will help you push through. Good luck!! :) xo, Caroline
I think it’s simply inspiring to be so excited and contented with what you already have :)
Thank you for sharing Caroline! I’d love to find a tee dress similar to yours (too bad everlane doesn’t ship to Europe…). I’m very exited to see more outfit posts, they always inspire me!
Caroline..you are such a breath of fresh air! I love your blog and was a fan a while back when you stepped away for a bit..I DIDN’T KNOW YOU RETURNED!! I am so grateful for all your hard work you put into this blog..it really shows. Keep up the great work..it’s so cool to see you evolve and change! Your intentions are pure..and that is why I come back time and time again. It seems you are sponsored by some pretty amazing companies..that’s great..hopefully it keeps your gas tank full as I know this blog must be a ton of work. I just wanted to send you a hug and a THANK YOU!
Christy! So nice! Thanks for the continued support :) xo, Caroline
So looking forward to more outfit posts!
Yay for more outfit posts! :) Also can’t wait for your Fall Style Series – I’m looking forward to planning for the season and could use some inspiration. Summer style was a breeze for me since I had a uniform that consistently felt easy, yet stylish – flowy tee, linen shorts and birks. I’m hoping to have the same success come fall. Thank you as always for your thoughtful posts, Caroline… your passion for this blog shows!
For laundering tips, I’ve found that Jolie Kerr’s posts (“ask a clean person”) are super helpful.
We have lost a lot of knowledge on how to care for clothing because of our fast fashion lives.
Vinegar, baking soda, borax powder, oxy clean, and a good laundering brush will make a difference — but you also have to think about what stains are made of.
It would be a great blog post to point readers to some of that information!
Hey Elisa, I appreciate your comment — so true! We don’t know how to take care of our clothes because they can be so easily and quickly replaced. Thanks for that reminder! I will definitely look into some of the methods you guys have all shared. Thanks! :) xo, Caroline
More outfit posts = best news ever. Looking forward to it.
I live in the UK (Norfolk) and our summers can be very variable. June and July were pretty cold and rainy, so definitely lots of transitional clothes with rain coat and rainboots. August has been warm, hot and sunny mostly, so there has been a need for proper summer clothes.
I have worn a very thin, striped shirt (Second Female) a lot too. I bought it in the winter sales, I assumed it was reduced as it is definitely summer weight. I will probably layer it with a polo neck come autumn.
I rediscovered denim shorts too, as we had good weather and lots of beach days. So, paired with flipflops, tees or vests. Very low key.
I have also loved my clogs (Lottas), which I bought last year and wore much more this summer. I am contemplating a burgundy covered toe pair for autumn, which I can wear in spring and cooler summer days next year too.
Looking forward to seeing your outfit posts too.
So excited to see more outfit posts! Your blog is my absolute favorite!
Hi caroline!
I just wanted to say thank you for your website and I’m glad to see you back in full swing after taking a family hiatus. After seeing you hadn’t posted for awhile, I lifted you up in prayer because something told me it was serious…what a blessing to be closer to your family now!
now, down to business.. ;)
thank you for your post about not saving anything for special occasions. I took your advice after considering a skinny blue/white striped ann taylor button down shirt I have been “saving” in my closet for any work meetings I have. Okay, seriously? I have 1 (maybe) or 2 per year! So I said “to heck with it,” and I put it on over a toad&Co cotton dress I practically live in for these triple digit California parts. I rolled up the sleeves, tied it in the front, and took my 6 and 4 year old boys to the grocery store with me! how liberating! how fascinating!
thanks again…you rock!
I love it Dawn! Thank you for sharing. And for the kind words :) xo, Caroline
I do have a question about fall wardrobe planning. I love your style, but I live in a climate that is not that temperate in fall/winter months (lots of rain and temperatures between -5°C and +8°C). I cycle to work in the cold and the rain but at my workplace the heat is on all the time. I could use some tips on layering for the workplace (I teach, so it does not have to be that formal). Thanks!
The Most Worn Pieces section is so helpful as I struggle against saving/collecting tendencies. It’s good to be reminded to only own what I actually wear, and to consciously get fuller use out of fewer things! My standout for summer is a navy linen cap-sleeve dress with a loose fit like your black silk. As subtle as it is, I get compliments on it all the time! (And my favorite for fall is a navy ponte cap-sleeve dress.. yay, a pattern!)
Your style is #goals! I’ve been really into short sleeved button ups lately! They’re just so versatile. I’ve been loving going to thrift stores and finding different patterns!

Loved reading this Caroline! I also found pattern to be so important in my capsule wardrobe this summer! It kept me from getting board throughout the last few months. I’m like you in that I like simple classic patterns and textures. :) My most worn items this season were my denim jacket, silk maxi dress, and striped tees! Looking forward to your future outfit posts!

I’m excited to see more outfit posts! I found your blog when I was pregnant last year and it was perfect timing because the mental switch after having a baby (coupled with body changes) has made most of my wardrobe look too young for me and I’m ready for an overhaul! It’s been fun getting inspiration from you and slowly building a stylish and versatile wardrobe that feels like me!
I just stumbled across your blog and I’m so glad I did! Like you, I’m a firm believer of trying to live simply without sacrificing style!
Thank you for sharing your summer round-up!

Hey Caroline! Thank you so much for sharing with us. It’s such a treat to read and a source of inspiration. : )
My closet goals for the coming seasons are to buy higher-quality (but fewer) pieces and to focus on earth-friendly fabrics (organic cotton, hemp, ethical wool, etc.). Erin from My Green Closet did some great YouTube videos about fabrics and I have vowed to never by silk or rayon again and to really focus on good fabric.
Thanks again! Looking forward to more reads. : )
You could get more use out of the white silk tank by wearing it in the cooler months and layering it with things like a jacket or open front sweater etc. maybe add a scarf or chunky necklace for variety. Just a though. That way you can get more use out of it and no one will know about the pit stains ;)
This is what I would have done with it in the first place. I sweat like a pig, so I would never have worn a silk top in hot weather. I wouldn’t even wear a white cotton t-shirt. Linen that you can throw in the washer! That’s the ticket. :)
Excited for more outfit posts! Once I figure out a pairing, I stick with it — it’ll be nice to have some inspiration and change things up!

I recently discovered this whole “capsule wardrobe” concept, and it intrigued me, bringing me to your blog. I love it, and it has inspired me to clean out my closet, as I’m a student with an obviously very minimal budget. I believe your blog will significantly help me in the future. Thanks!

I have the same issue with white clothing!! I absolutely love the way cream and white look, but having hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) and living in humid Miami = ruined white clothes after only a season (or sometimes less). I hate the idea of doling out money for quality pieces only to throw them out after a handful of wears. If you have any more tips on removing stains from or keeping white and cream clothing fresh I’d absolutely love to read them! By the way I love these Style Series posts. Great!
I’m tearing up with emotional excitement–yes, really! Your inspiration has been a life changer for me and now I can hardly wait till your anticipated outfit posts!!!
On a less exciting note, however, do you have any thoughts you could share for those of us who struggle like a yoyo with weightloss/gain issues and the pain this causes in trying to nail down a capsule wardrobe? I will be the first to admit, it took me since the day your blog started, to realize I was out of touch with my style because I couldn’t face the fact I was and still am a little overweight. This annoying fact in my life makes everything look aweful in the mirror, and yet, if it was so important to me, you’d think I’d be healthier by now, but it isn’t so. But I am determined! It just makes planning a wardrobe SO MUCH HARDER! [cry, wail, sob].
Thank you for sharing this! I shop at Madewell a lot and actually own a lot of similar/same pieces. I’m also stoked for more outfit posts, as this gives me so many ideas on how to style my own clothes!
I love your blog.
yah i feel like we have you back now!
I discovered your blog only recently and I am so excited to do a capsule experiment with my wardrobe. I am in my mid-thirties, and in a professional career and have always struggled to find my style – partly due to the fact that I have ’emergency’ buys when I desperately need clothes. And then it ends up not matching anything else I have. Thanks for your practical tips and advice. I will definitely be following this blog!
I found your blog RIGHT before you went on hiatus and i’m SOOOO glad you came back! I’m all about having a minimalist wardrobe and attempting to carry this theme throughout my house. I’ve learned so much about textile waste and am attempting to only buy long lasting quality items for our home and closet. (Hope to see some more house entries on your blog! ) Thank you for all of the inspiration!
Hello Caroline! Im brazilian and I love your texts and your capsule experiment, so I`m very inspired to practice your advices. I need to be less consumerist. Thanks for your exemples! Be Happy!
I started a completely different adventure thanks to you! :D I can’t believe I started back in January (already?!), and am slowly trying to build staple pieces- the hardest thing for me to buy! Quick question my friend- which denim vest are you wearing with your romper?? I too love Madewell and see one on sale and am wondering if it would be a good purchase! I know style is personal, but I love to get a second opinion.
Thanks in advance, if you find this! x
Just found your blog today and I’m already in love! I love your take on minimalism and I’ll definitely be back!
