I’ve always felt drawn to several different styles at the same time — in music, interior design, and especially in fashion.
These days, my style leans pretty minimalist. But sometimes I crave something more romantic. Something that makes me feel like I’m twirling in a field, singing Do-Re-Mi with Maria and the von Trapp children.
Over the years, though, I’ve felt pressure to fit my entire style under one label — as if I need to pick one and forgo the rest.
It’s no wonder why. Personal style is often presented as an either/or. Are you sporty or romantic? Colorful or neutral? Minimal or maximal?
But to me, this either/or mindset zaps the fun right out of something that’s meant to be playful and open-ended.
So even though minimalism plays a big role in my aesthetic, romance gets to shine too. I try to keep either/or thinking out of it. Instead, I pick a few different styles I love, pull elements from each, and blend them into something uniquely mine.
Take this beautiful black dress for example — the dainty trim and ruffled hem are decidedly romantic, but the color and simple lines make the dress feel understated and minimal. It’s both/and — and it feels like me.
Is there a part of your style you’ve brushed aside because it didn’t “fit the aesthetic”? How could you let it shine a little today?
P.S. Here’s an even simpler version of this dress — 100% linen and under $80. Quince for the win.

I’m pretty classic & minimalist but I’m definitely drawn to edgy details and I do go with it. That is the thing about personal style… it should be intuitive and it should be a bit of a mix. That’s what makes it personal.
I love this reminder that the fun can come from the “both/and”! I wear my Vejas with everything even if I “shouldn’t”. Turns out that might just be my style!
