Oooh, doing a thing today! Shorts and boots.
I love shorts and boots, but it’s a combo that also makes me feel a little conspicuous. Will people think I’m trying too hard?
The other day I wrote that I want to commit to my outfits with more conviction — to really try and stick the landing. I’ve been inspired by Leandra’s exhortations — “It’s good to look a little weird.” And this outfit doesn’t even look weird!! It’s worlds away from weird. But I want to get a little closer to weird. One step at a time. And as a person who sits squarely in my style comfort zone 99% of the time, this step (in killer boots, no less) feels thrilling.

I loooooooove shorts and boots! This outfit is ✨️fantastic!✨️
We maybe get one or two days a year here in Southern California when this combo is actually comfortable for the weather, and I am all over it. No one wants to see a 52-year-old woman in cutoff jeans shorts and boots and a big, happy sweater? Don’t look. I’m happy as a carefree-shorts, empowering-boots-wearin’ clam!
LOVE THIS.
Your comment made me smile so big Jen! YES! TO! THIS! Also, what is this big, happy sweater you speak of? Sounds amazing!
Honest to goodness, as I wrote that comment, I was forming a picture in my mind of a little smiling clam emoji with demin shorts and boots, and it was adorable!
The big happy sweater I speak of (which I am actually wearing as I type this!) is from the Spanish brand Babaa–organic cotton, natural dye, black crewneck. Their sweaters are pricey but QUALITY and the perfect combination of tailored and slouchy. And they have good sales, which is when I snagged this one. No regrets. I wear it at least twice a week most weeks as the weather allows. Highly recommend.
You don’t look weird at all! This is how we dressed in the 90s all the time – except the boxers were all stolen from boyfriends and the boots were Docs.
Yessss! I too have been thinking to myself “ok, you’ve got a great base for clothes, now it’s time to add some weird stuff.” This typically shows up in accessories for me, like a pair of Brother Vellies sphere slides or wearing two watches like a bracelet stack.
