A few years ago, I was really into a sparse, minimalist aesthetic. I was also really into having a perfect Instagram feed that reflected that.
However! I had this one dress — a romantic, frilly, floral dress that made me feel like I was dancing and singing Do-Re-Mi with Maria and the von Trapp children. I loved the way I felt in that dress.
But I never posted it online because “it didn’t fit the aesthetic.”
Lol, oh 2018. :-)
Over the years, I’ve learned (and forgotten, and relearned) to prize the whole, authentic range of my style instead of just the one that “fits the aesthetic.”
So even though a big part of my style is minimalist, romance is in the mix too. And these days, I let it shiiiiine! (As evidenced by this outfit and this outfit.)
To me, this gorgeous black dress is the perfect blending of the two styles — the dainty trim and ruffled hem are decidedly romantic, but the color and simple lines make the dress feel a little understated, minimal. Feels like I’m able to honor both sides of myself in one garment. <3
Is there a part of your style you’ve brushed under the rug because it didn’t “fit the aesthetic”? How could you let it shine a little today? How do you honor your different (sometimes opposing) aesthetics?
This Reformation dress sold out last year and they didn’t restock it. HOWEVER! Shopbop has it in stock! Yayy! I love that it’s 100% linen (cooling in the heat) AND I don’t have to wear a bra with it (but it is strapless or balconette bra friendly).
Also, these canvas Veja Volley sneakers are so much lighter and cooler (temperature-wise) than my Sambas. Perfect summer sneaker.

That’s an adorable outfit & perfect for the Texas heat. I have begun to hide my bohemian hippie style, because I tell myself “I’m 58, I should stick with classic, neutral, minimalist pieces.” In my dreams, I would have long hair & dress like Stevie Nicks 24/7 😄 I’m going to attempt to let that part of my style peak through a little bit this week.
Today is my 40th birthday. If there’s anything I’ve learned (and I know you’ve been here longer than me but hear me out!) it’s to dress in what makes you comfortable and happy! Stevie Nicks is an icon and the bohemian chic is simply another type of classic look. She’s in her 70s and still killing it. Why not you?
