Part of the way you shape your personal style is through the conscious things you choose — saving outfits on Pinterest, deciding to shop for a specific pair of shoes, or choosing a set of style words to guide you.
But what we don’t talk about enough is how everything you do gets filtered through your own habits.
This filter is usually unconscious — but it is not a flaw, it’s a feature. It’s exactly what makes your style yours.
Most of us are so close to our own habit filter that we don’t even notice it. You might even feel like you don’t have personal style at all — but in truth, you do. It’s already showing up in these deeply instinctive ways.
I have certain ways of putting things together that I always come back to. I see so many of them in this outfit alone. My penchant for some form of jeans and a tee. My need to feel casual and unfussy. My pull towards nostalgia (y2k vibes are strong in this outfit). Even before I had language to describe it, I was filtering what I wore through those habits.
So if you’ve ever worried that your style isn’t unique, maybe this is your moment to realize that it is. You’re already filtering every outfit through a lens only you have.
When it comes to personal style, inspiration and conscious choice are only half of the story. The other half is your habits. And the filter those habits create is one thing you don’t have to fix or overthink. It’s doing beautiful work in the background. Let it.
What would it feel like to stop trying to fix your style? What if your most instinctive choices are already the best part of your style?
