I get it. Not everyone loves summer and the clothes that go along with it.
I can barely scroll my YouTube or Substack feed without seeing thoughtful and compelling arguments about how summer clothes are boring because you can’t layer.
But do you know what I’ve realized for myself? Summer is my absolute favorite season to dress for specifically because you can’t layer much.
I don’t love the feeling of fabric covering my skin, bunching up at my bendy points, like elbows and knees. I don’t like the actual weight of it on my body. Free my arms! Free my shoulders!
There’s such an ease to grabbing one dress and your trusty sandals and getting on with it. Less items to coordinate means less time spent putting together an outfit. The act of putting on clothes (and removing them at the end of the day) takes significantly less time because I’m not three layers deep.
Could someone say this outfit is boring because it doesn’t have layers? Definitely. But — at least in the summertime — I’m okay with that. I’m happier enjoying that easy, layer-free feeling that I only get from wearing a simple summer outfit.
I’m unencumbered. <3

I think layering has a time and place, and summer is not it. And we can embrace it for what it is! We are on day 1 of an intense heat wave (even though I think it really began yesterday, it is officially today) and I want to wear as little as possible. 🤣 Unfortunately for me I work with children, so I have to keep that in mind. Lately however I haven’t been loving shorts and like you have been drawn to the simplicity and COMFORT of a cool lightweight sundress. Looking awesome as always Caroline, so glad to have you back in this space 🤍
It may be unpopular but I totally share your opinion. Layering is what you do when you need to adjust when in changing weather. No changing weather, no need to adjust :)) “I’m unencumbered”, what a nice way to put it!!
