DAILY OUTFITS

What is it good for?

04/18/25

We’re getting into warm-weather dressing season, which is my favorite! But apparently I’m in the minority here, because most people I talk to don’t like dressing for warm-weather. The main reason cited is because you can’t layer, so it’s hard to make an interesting outfit.

I watched this Caroline Winkler video on YouTube the other day (love her, you should definitely follow her). In it, she posed the question:

This time is not the time I wanted, it’s not the time I would have chosen, but what is it good for?

I mean, it’s an epic life-reframing question. But it’s also a pretty great fashion-reframing question.

Because maybe warm weather is a good time to just lay back and enjoy the simplicity of a less interesting outfit. There’s less pressure to make a complex and layered outfit. It’s quicker to get dressed in the mornings. Since you’re wearing less, you might spend less on clothes. All good things!

What do you think? Are you a fan of warm-weather dressing or not so much? If you’re not, could you think of one or two things it could be good for? I’d love to hear!

P.S. For the record, I actually do think there are lots of ways to make an interesting outfit in the heat. Contrasting proportions, for one — like here, I’m doing big on top, small on bottom. Texture is another way to add interest — see: amazing woven rope bag. :)

I’m with you, I love warm weather outfits! I feel most like myself in easy going linen garments.

Same! I’m happiest in a summer dress and flip flops.

I have to say, for many years I was in the cooler weather dressing camp. Loved heavy sweaters with jeans and boots in the winter and the layers of Fall and Spring. Two years ago our family moved to the west coast of Florida where it’s summer 9 months of the year. I hadn’t even worn shorts in our previous location for years so it was a real change. But now I have a full wardrobe of neutral linen and gauzy cotton tops to go with denim and cotton shorts, some cotton dresses and a closet full of sandal options. So I guess it’s all about having interesting options in the right weight of clothing. Now, I don’t want to be bothered by layers when I need them!

Hi, it’s me, I don’t like warm weather dressing! And the joke’s on me because I live in Florida! I think one of my problems is that I hate a lot of classic summer clothes like shorts or mini skirts or spaghetti straps. But I love a reframe and I love this question. I’ve been dreading the start of summer but I like the idea of embracing simplicity. Like what would I want to wear if I was spending a slow summer at a country house in Italy, with not much to do other than read and head into the nearest sleepy town for groceries and gelato? Not my reality but I could still dress like it is! Simple, classic, and comfortable would be just the ticket.

Where I live it’s summer literally 6 months of the year so I CRAVE cold weather dressing (not that it actually gets cold cold here anyway but sometimes it feels nice to wear a long sleeve T-shirt of jacket!)
