As I was getting dressed today, it hit me that 7th-grade-me would so wear this outfit.
Come to think of it, 7th-grade-me DID wear this outfit, for the most part. Just swap the burgundy track pants for a pair of periwinkle blue Gap track pants, complete with floral embroidery on the pockets and hem. Oh! And swap the gorgeous glass pendant necklace for one of those stretchy tattoo chokers. And maybe swap the chic, minimalist flip flops for chunky, platform flip flops.
The details have changed, but the essence of the outfit remains the same.
I love how there are things that steadily and continually resonate with us, no matter how many years pass. We can always find little ways to return to ourselves through various things like clothes, music, movies etc. It reminded me of a beautiful question I came across on Substack the other day:
Who are you now that you always knew you were?
I find it incredibly comforting to sit with that question. <3

I’m so glad you’re here today — thanks for reading Unfancy.
I got all inspired and styled these track pants 5 different ways the other day, so this week is officially track pants week! I’ll be sharing a new way to style them each day. See you tomorrow!

I love this post! And what a great question. For me, it is baggy (formerly “parachute”) pants and 80s band tees cut into tanks. Updates include sassier hair and punchy earrings.
Coming home to ourselves is one of the best experiences we could ever have. Beautiful work, Caroline!
Love this outfit (and the sentiment!)—and it just reinvigorated my search for maroon cargo/parachute pants. You definitely got me thinking about parachute pants recently, but the specific wishlist item is thanks to B-girl Ami. She competed in breakdancing at the Olympics this year wearing a grey sweatshirt and maroon cargos and I have been obsessed with recreating that look since!! The color combo and silhouette is just so cool and perf for fall. Off to keep looking!
What a question to start my morning with!
I attended Catholic school, so I wore the same thing every weekday, and learned early on that accessories were the fastest way to distinguish myself. I still love earrings, bags, and shoes. Maybe a little too much 🙈 I went to public high school, and it was the Gap swing commercial years. I wore a lot of American Eagle, and I was also a horse girl – I still love a skinny jean or a legging tucked into a tall boot and topped with a classic pea coat. I also love flip flops as I grew up in a coastal city. Everyone in my hometown has at least one pair of flip flops and a pair of Sperry top siders no matter your age or income level.
