I’m coming to you from my new office in our new house. That’s right, Aaron and I moved a couple of weeks ago, and we’ve been having so much fun getting settled in Dallas. We moved to be closer to our friends, and as we’ve been getting settled in the neighborhood, we can’t help but feel like we’ll be here for a nice long while. It’s exciting!
Since I just finished unpacking the last of our boxes, I thought it would be appropriate to shoot today’s blog post outfit photos in our new house. So get ready for a little peek at the progress!
White has always been a big player in my wardrobe, and I have no plans to stop wearing it even thought it’s after Labor Day. Why abandon one of my favorite colors for half the year? I’ve found that once I nix any “rules” that don’t mesh with my life, getting dressed becomes a much more personal and enjoyable experience.
So today, I’m exploring seven ways to style white clothes for fall:
- First up, I’m sharing five ways to style Tribe Alive’s pair of high rise, wide leg pants made of upcycled denim. They have a similar look to the iconic Kamm Pants, but they are less than half the price! I’m so thrilled to have found them.
- Second, I’m sharing two ways to style Tribe Alive’s structured upcycled denim dress. Like the pants, it’s chemical-free, dye-free, and uses minimal water and energy to produce.
Let’s jump in!
LOOK 1 | tone on tone
If you see something you like, you can shop it using the affiliate links below:
Tee (gifted, conscious) | Pants (gifted, conscious, size up one size) | Belt | Boots (conscious) | Cardigan (conscious) | Large necklace (linked to similar) | Small necklace (linked to similar)
Styling notes:
- Try a pant length somewhere between cropped and full length for fall. | The first thing we need to talk about is how perfect the length of these pants are for ankle booties. When I first slipped them on, my first thought was, “These pants need hemming.” But! Once I paired them with heeled ankle booties, I was whistling a different tune. To me, that length makes these pants so modern and so fall and winter appropriate.
- Dress for varying temperatures. | One moment it’s warm, the next it’s cool. Ah, the story of fall. So this look (complete with the cardigan at hand) is ideal for any temperature swings.
LOOK 2 | bundled up
Sweater (linked to similar, conscious) | Pants (gifted, conscious, size up one size) | Coat | Boots
Styling Notes:
- Wear your signature color palette: This color palette is my fall go-to and has been for a few years now — I wear it at least once a week (if not two or three times a week). No shame in repeating a color palette. :)
- If you’re used to skinny jeans but want to venture into a wide leg, try it with a long layer on top: Wide leg pants are a statement, especially if you’re not used to wearing them. But they take a backseat when paired with another statement piece, like a long coat or cardigan in a bold neutral hue. Give it a try and see what you think.
LOOK 3 | relaxed
Sweater | Pants (gifted, conscious, size up one size) | Mules (conscious)
Styling Notes:
- Fall-ify white pants with a chunky knit and mules. | Rich, warm color and a bit of texture is all you really need to take your summer whites into fall.
- Shake up your outfit proportions with volume on top and bottom. | I tend to want to tuck in tops to create a waistline, but it’s fun to try something different every now and then. I love how this look communicates an incredibly relaxed vibe.
- Try flats with wide leg pants | Again, I would usually gravitate towards a heel with these pants, but I think a flat conveys a casual, laid back look that I’m loving.
LOOK 4 | tone on tone, dressier version
Top (linked to similar, conscious) | Pants (gifted, conscious, size up one size) | Shoes (gifted, conscious)
Styling Notes:
- Try an ultra high waist for fall. | Goodness these pants have the highest rise and I could not love them more! I particularly love that they stay high in the back (see the photo below) — I don’t know about you but I’m always wishing pants were a just a little higher in the back. This pair executes that perfectly.
- White is a statement on it’s own when worn head to toe. | And by not adding other accessories to the outfit, I’m letting that tone on tone statement take center stage.
- Too warm for a big sweater? Try a short sleeve sweater. | We’re still having back-and-forth weather in Texas, so a short sleeve sweater is perfect to channel fall while still dressing for the warmer temperatures.
LOOK 5 | belted
Sweater (linked to similar, conscious) | Belt | Earrings (conscious) | Pants (gifted, conscious, size up one size) | Boots (conscious)
Styling Notes:
- Shake up your go-to outfit formula. | The basic formula for this outfit is: sweater, pants, boots. But I swapped my typical skinny jeans for wide leg pants, added a belt which I rarely do, and all of a sudden I’ve got a fresh new look on my hands while still using my go-to formula.
- The smallest change can make an outfit feel new. Try an accessory you haven’t worn in a while. | It’s been years since I’ve worn earrings regularly. I also haven’t worn a belt in a long, long time. I’m not sure why, I just stopped wearing them at some point. So now, adding something as small as earrings or a belt makes any outfit feel inventive.
LOOK 6 | dress layered over jeans
Dress (gifted, conscious, wearing XS/S) | Jeans (linked to similar, conscious) | Shoes (linked to similar) | Short Necklace (conscious) | Long Necklace (linked to similar, conscious)
Styling Notes:
- Combine basic pieces in an unexpected way for a not-so-basic look. | A white dress and black skinny jeans are pretty tame on their own. But when combined, this look gets elevated to inventive and creative.
- When putting together a not-so-basic look, consider keeping your palette neutral. | To steer the look in a more elegant direction, I kept things simple with a clean black and white color palette.
- Add interest to an outfit by playing up contrasting proportions. | This dress is voluminous and the fabric is actually quite structured, so I balanced that out by pairing it with my skinniest, most legging-like jeans.
LOOK 7 | sweater layered under dress
Dress (gifted, conscious, wearing XS/S) | Sweater (linked to similar, conscious) | Boots
Styling Notes:
- Use contrasting color strategically. | I went with bold black and white contrast here to highlight my favorite element of this dress — the frayed edging around the neck.
- Add instant interest with structured fabric. | This dress is made of the most stunning, architectural, structured recycled denim. I think we’re used to seeing drapier clothes in every day life so wearing a structured piece like this stands out and makes for an original and distinctive statement.
- Give sweater hair a try. | Okay, this whole leave-your-hair-tucked-into-your-sweater-after-you-put-it-on thing is something I’ve rolled my eyes at. But upon trying it, there’s something kinda cool and cozy about it. I’m daring myself to wear it out the next time we go out to dinner. I’ll tally up the amount of “Hey, you’re hair is caught in your shirt” comments, and report back. ;)

And there you have it!
So tell me, are you a fan of wearing white year round or do you stick to the no-white-after-Labor-Day rule? What’s one fashion “rule” that you follow and one that you break?
xo,
P.S. There are plenty of other spots around the internet where I share my style these days:
Pinterest and LTK for quick outfit ideas and visual inspiration.
Youtube for fun videos like my minimal summer makeup routine.
Spotify for yummy playlists, like Morning Coffee: Fall 2018, Pre-Bedtime Zen, and Self Care Night.
I think the belt really makes/finishes your white pants.
This post is so gorgeously shot!
Love this post! Yes, I wear white year round. I remember in grade school wearing some ‘winter white’ wide wale corduroy pants, loved them! I’m going to try my wide leg pants with heeled booties before I hem, these look perfect on you. I do feel unsure of how to layer with the wide legs, the cocoon jacket is lovely! Do you mind sharing which color you have? There are a few in that tone.
Hi Teresa! For the cocoon coat, I have the cigar color. :)
Nice to have you back!
clare:)
You. Are. Gorgeous, darling!
It’s always good to find one of your posts in my mailbox :) Besides, the pictures in this post are gorgeous.
I had it on my mind for a while (I was just delaying the purchase) but you convinced me that white jeans are a great addition to a fall-winter wardrobe.
We don’t have any labour day rules in Australia. People wear whatever colour they want all year round.
I’m a Dark Autumn so I don’t wear white, white ever because it doesn’t suit me. My best light neutrals are off whites and creams and I wear them sparingly because other colours suit me better.
I say do what’s best for you and wear whatever you want, whenever you want ?
For those of you in the NW region of the country, Pendleton has a nearly identical pair of white pants that are on sale right now for under $20! I have them in black and I looooooooooooove them.
In many parts of the world fall means rains with puddles and wet streets. Wearing white bottoms might not be practical. Thus looks # 6 and 7 are my favorite!
Otherwise contrasting items in #5 (belted) make this look winning!
Very nice! I don’t do white pants (skirts, shorts – I will sit in something, trust me :) ), but these outfits are lovely! I really love the white dress over the dark colored sweater. I’m really pale, so all white washes me out – the pop of dark color makes a difference!
Love everything about this post! I have scrolled through the pictures NUMEROUS times. Even when I was a child I felt the white after Labor Day rule silly, so I don’t abide by it. I also will wear linen until it’s literally just too cold to be comfortable in, usually around Jan. I’m sure there may be fashion rules I do follow, but I can’t seem to think of any I strictly adhere to. :)
Hello! Off topic, sort of , you did say new house. I would love to know about that day bed please? Thank you for a lovely blog.
Kind Regards,
E
Yes, love this! It’s so fun to see you push yourself with styling, I love the non traditional looks you pulled together. I think my fav is the sweater under the dress. ??
For what it’s worth, the old rule about not wearing white after Labor Day referred only to accessories, not clothing (surely people wear white shirts, socks, etc. all year ’round?).
Gotta go with the bundled up look…but the dress over leggings is a close second. All look wonderful in your new home! Thanks for sharing.
Hello, Danielle Haim! Love her style and think this post is so her vibe. Great job — the styling and photography are perfection.
I have a pair of white jeans that I will keep using this fall and winter :)
Those pants really do have major Kamm pants vibes. Love ’em!
Love the outfits you created with the dress! I am all for jazzy combinations of clothes…
One rule I follow: everything I wear as to be comfy and yet somehow sexy… one I never do is to keep summer dresses and skirts only for summer! Wear them all year round!

Thanks for this lovely post. I’m in the middle of editing my closet and keep coming back to it to help me stay on track. I thought you might enjoy my tiny pallete hack. I love sienna but can’t buy anything new for this season (if I could I’d be all over those Tribe pants). Anyways, going through my closet I realized that I had a few things that might respond well to dye, including a pink Everlane dress which I’d ruined with very yummy curry. I used a terracotta brown fabric dye and result is a soft clay brown. I’m also planning to try natural dyes on a few wool sweaters and feeling pretty stoked about the possibilities. Hope this inspires other readers too! xo
Such a fantastic idea, Naomi! I’ve been considering dying a few of my pieces too — an inexpensive (and fun!) way to get a new look. :)
What color is your Aritzia coat? It’s gorgeous!
It’s the cigar color. :)
Beautiful photography, I love watching your style evolve!
I haven’t seen that Cuyana long cashmere sweater of yours in a while. How is it holding up? Do you still love it as much as you did? Is the length still working for you? I’m trying to decide between that one and a couple others.
Years later, I still love it dearly. I regularly have to brush pills off of it, but that comes with the territory with any knit, no matter the quality. No holes yet, which is fantastic since it’s a thinner knit. Currently, I wear it as more of an at-home piece, since right now I prefer to wear chunkier/boxier tops that don’t fit underneath the fitted sleeves. But I love having a special piece to wear at home, instead of reserving it for going out (especially since I work from home / spend the majority of my time at home). It makes me feel “dressed”. Overall, super impressed with how it’s wearing over time. :)
I feel like the nude booties really work with those light-coloured pants! Those are an item I’d like to invest in for next spring! Love your vibes!
I tend to avoid white because I will inevitably spill my coffee or something on it but I love the fresh look. Maybe I should give it more of a try – after all, I do have access to a washing machine.
Your home looks gorgeous as always!

Ahhh all these are fabulous, love the dress!
All gorgeous looks, all very “you,” even though you’ve changed some things up. You have the loveliest palette. I always try to limit my colors…but then a pink creeps in…and a green…and a beautiful aqua blue…and before you know it I’m all colorful again!

Loving your pants!! They are so cool and confortable!
Have a great day dear! xx

Love the outfit ideas, but I would prefer skinny jeans. Those culotte’s do not look good on short curvy girls XD
Just love your site – am trying to do color and simple wardrobe combinations … thanx so much!! ???
I love reading your posts. Could you also tell me where you got the day bed? It is beautiful. I would love to read a bit of how you decorate your house too!
I live in a snowy climate – white always seemed like the perfect winter color to me. Think “ice queen from Narnia”… but more casual… and way more friendly. :-\
Random question. What do you mean by “conscious”? You put that word next to your links ^_^’
Hi Regina! It’s an umbrella term I use to signify an item that’s been made with higher standards, like if it’s sustainably produced or from a company that goes above and beyond to treat its employees well. :)
What size are you wearing in the pants?
