4.10 five pieces to keep you warm + comfy this fall

Guess what?! We got another cool front this weekend! I’m ECSTATIC, pulling out all my fall clothes, trying to wear them all at once.

Looks awkward. Going with it anyway. FALL!

It was also dreary + rainy most of the weekend — and, who wants to dress up when it’s rainy? Not this girl. So I needed an outfit that was comfy + warm.

Enter this five piece combo. Stretchy leggings, a waffle knit tee, high top Vans, a cozy colorful scarf, and a furry puffer jacket.

YESPLEASE! (Sidenote: Can’t wait til Amy Poehler’s book comes out — less than a month!)

Let’s chat about these leggings real quick.

The legging/pant debate is a hot one. Are they pants? Are they not pants? This particular pair that I’m wearing is made of Ponte — a thick, structured, yet stretchy material. In my opinion, it’s a thick enough fabric to land these leggings in the pant camp. That being said, I still like having some bum coverage. So I topped them off with a tee that has a longer curved shirttail hem. It covers in the back + shows a bit of leg on the side, creating the illusion of longer legs. Win win.

But like I said, the legging/pant debate is a hot one. We all have to go with what we’re comfortable with + let other people do the same. :)

Top: Aritzia

Leggings: old from J.Crew (similar — made of a similar fabric + this pair has back pockets too!)

Shoes: Madewell

Bag: Nordstrom

Jacket: Zara

Scarf: Madewell

I smiled the minute I saw this post because my outfit today is nearly identical to this….except my scarf is dark green.

Gorgeous outfit! My favorite part about it is how simple it is. I can recreate this with my black skinny jeans and a long, comfy top. That scarf is turning out to be very useful, too. Hooray for comfy outfits! :)

My favourite legging/pants are from J.Crew as well. The pixie pants are the best in-between style. Thick enough to be pants, comfy enough to be leggings. I’m with you on the longer lengths in the back though, just in case.

But why Capsule 4? Why was the Spring Capsule, Capsule 2? I couldn’t find a capsule that came before that.

Hi Carol! Spring was the second capsule I made, summer the third, and fall the fourth. I made my first capsule before I started blogging, so it’s not documented anywhere. xo Caroline

Well, that explains it. :) So Caroline, you already have a winter capsule for which you’ll just have to buy a few pieces?

Okay, thanks, Raina. Didn’t realize this was all ready the fourth capsule…time flies! I need to go back and catch up from the beginning as I just found this blog last week :)

Team leggings! The leggings debate is a funny one. Shorts can be so much more revealing.

Amen! I think leggings are only an issue when you get the super thin fabric that stretches when you wear them so that you can see what’s underneath. Otherwise, I don’t see the problem with wearing them as pants!

Super cute! I love that Madewell scarf. I’m torn on leggings. I think they look adorable on people and I do wear them but am pretty conscious about making sure I’m wearing a long top/tunic with them. Of course, here in Southern California, it’s questionable whether we’ll ever see fall….it’s still in the 80s today….

    Caroline,
I continue to adore your fall capsule! This post got me wondering…will you be doing a post specifically on layering and different ways to layer or layering combinations? That’s something that I still struggle to pull off. I’m sure you thought about what pieces would layer well together when building your capsule, but are there certain colors/things you stick to? My three cardigans/sweaters are all neutrals, which I thought would make it easiest in layering, but now I wish I had a bit more color!

I’ve been trying to stick to my capsule and not shop, but I’m obsessed with the buffalo plaid trend and I am dying for a red plaid scarf! Your amazing outfit on this post is not helping :)

By the way, I loved hearing you interview on the Lively podcast. It was great to hear your thoughts on your style evolution and how your relationship to fashion and self-image has evolved. Keep up the awesome work!

I’m not usually a big fan of the leggings-as-pants thing, but I agree with you. As long as they’re thick and have at least semi-bum coverage, then it’s okay for me, but less that that and I personally feel uncomfortable. This outfit is adorable though and I love it!

I love your fall capsule wardrobe. Seems like there are plenty items, even though 37 pieces seems so small to me!!! Any tips for contentment/living with less. Any blogs or books you recommend? I’m ready to have less stuff and more time and money to spend on vacation. =)

Be More With Less, which Caroline mentions as personal inspiration on the podcast. That is a truly fabulous blog and she also has a minimalist wardrobe challenge called Project 333 (33 items in closet, change every 3 months). I highly recommend Be More With Less, you will definitely learn lots of contentment tips from Courtney for every aspect of your life.

Hi! Recently found your blog and love your fashion philosophy…going to try doing a winter capsule with my sister and very excited about it. What size did you get for your waffle knit tee? (And maybe you’ve answered this before, but what is your height/weight? Helpful in case I see something you’re wearing that I may want to purchase.) Thanks!

Love this…minus the coat. I have a hard time thinking that it got THAT cold in Texas… ;)

Ha! Ditto. Really cute outfit, but as someone who lives in Minnesota I got quite the laugh out of that coat ever being necessary in Texas :) Although I guess it all depends on what you’re accustomed to as “cold” weather.

I usually don’t wear leggings as I’m afraid it will show my VPL (visible panty line). Would a thick legging prevent it?

A long top would prevent it. I don’t wear leggings, but I think they look fine on other people if the top is long enough. I hate it when it isn’t.

Love this outfit and agree about bum coverage when wearing leggings! This looks like the perfect airport outfit…I’d wear my riding boots with it so they don’t take up room in my suitcase ;)

Side note…a while ago you posted a book called carry on warrior and I associating it with your paired down wardrobe, thought it was about how to best pack a carry on!! I had a laugh at myself when I looked up the book!!

I love this cute casual outfit – it’s another effortless outfit winner! I’ve started following your blog in the last month and I love all your outfits! Hopefully I’ll be able to create my own capsule wardrobe as well :)

On another note, I actually did a post on my blog a few months ago about whether leggings are pants… my verdict is along the same lines as you – if they are thick, and you do a bit of bum coverage then they certainly can be worn as pants :)

Keep up the good work Caroline

I have fleece lined tights and leggings that I wear under skirts and dresses (and sometimes even jeans) in the winter to work to keep me warm. I love them!
