Remember this dress? It used to live in my spring capsule wardrobe.
Well, it made it into my fall capsule wardrobe because (1) Stripes are cool! (2) It’s made from ponte, meaning: it never wrinkles + it’s super easy to throw into a suitcase. (3) It’s versatile beyond versatile — here are all the ways I’ve styled it so far.
Anyway. Besides being one of my favs, this outfit is the perfect example of how to take a summer dress to fall: I just threw a sweater poncho on top and threw ankle boots on the bottom.
You know what I love about sweater ponchos? That they show a little of what you’re wearing underneath. The way those stripes peek through on the sides? Can’t. Get. Enough.
Another great thing about them? They’re plenty warm, but they’re an easy layer to lose. If the temperatures warm up in the afternoon (which in Texas, they most certainly will), I can easily shed the sweater poncho.
And …. guys …. the color of that bag. SO FALL.
Going to light a pumpkin candle right this minute.

Love it!
Very cute, I wouldn’t have thought of this. I didn’t see this poncho in your capsule though or am I missing it?
Hi Kristin! It’s the slouchy sweater on the first row. :) xo Caroline
Oh thanks for pointing me in the right direction! Don’t know why I wasn’t picturing poncho as slouchy sweater. For your readers who are loving your reversible tote, G.H. Bass Outlet has one that’s very similar (including wristlet) in a lots of colors (at least six or seven color combinations) for $29.99. Seemed pretty sturdy and would be a good option if you live near an outlet center (no bad smell either).
So cute!! especially when you have absolutely perfect legs like yours. The slouchy sweater looks different on than when I saw it in the capsule, really liking it. Think I might need it. :)
I love this one!!!
Way adorable, Caroline!! Cool but still approachable. And those of us that don’t live in Texas can add some tights and a cute jacket :D
Caroline! Love this so much! I have just a quick question:
For the purse, is it the black/cognac color indicated on Nordstrom’s website?
xo, Camille
Hi Camille! Sure is! :) xo Caroline
Great cut on the sweater!

Yes, great sweater poncho! I just purchased your tote (and a pumpkin candle!) and have now promised myself that there will be no more purchasing of things for my capsule this year. That feels good. :-)
That sweater is so amazing!

I tried a poncho that only made me look like a blob *wompwompwomp*. How does this look when both hands and down and you’re just walking around? Does the side slit show how far up it is naturally, or does it only peek through when you fold your arms? I’m just loving this comfy look, I’m tempted to try it myself!
I love those boots! Thanks for sharing!

Love this!! I really adore your simple, put – together style.
I’ve been working toward this capsule wardrobe thing over the last year or so, I just didn’t realize it had a name! You’ve really encouraged me to take it one step further! I’ve never had so few clothes in my closet yet felt so content with what I have – being that they all work together!
I’m also lovin’ how minimal your blog ITSELF is. It’s the only blog I have EVER kept my subscription to. I look forward to it first thing in the morning … reading through in no time. You don’t feel the need to add every thought that’s passing through your head. It’s simple and sweet, like a bite of sea salt dark chocolate almond bark! Love it. :)
Love this outfit! It’s adorable and perfect for this transitional weather we’re having!
I’ve just started reading your blog and LOVE it already!! I’m dying to know where you originally bough this sweater/poncho! I’m obsessed and the similar one you linked just doesn’t do it for me. Hoping the details of this one will help me track down a similar style! Thanks so much for all the amazing inspiration! I’m starting my first capsule wardrobe this season!
Hi Jennifer! I originally got it from Anthro in 2011. The brand is Guinevere. Good luck! Let me know if you track it down! :) xo Caroline
Hi Caroline! I know this post (and dress) is super old but I’m looking for a similar dress and I’m wondering if you have any suggestions of where to look or have seen a similar dress recently! Thanks!!
