The other day someone asked me a great question:
How do you motivate yourself to dress cute and comfy even if you are just going to be around the house?
Three quick thoughts:
Try dressing in levels.
Most of my outfits happen in two levels — a home level (one) and a going out level (two).
For example, with this outfit, when I got dressed in the morning, I just put on a tank top and these jeans. Level one — and suuuper comfortable for around the house.
But then, when it was time to go out, I threw this sweater over the tank top and added the clogs, bag, and necklace. Boom, level two!
For yesterday’s outfit, level one was a simple tee and jean shorts. To take it to level two, I added the cardigan, Birks, and bag.
The key is to have remarkably comfortable pieces in your closet that work for level one — AKA they’ve got to be as comfortable as yoga pants.
Bake “getting ready” into your morning routine.
Personally, I feel better when I start the day dressed. But even still, sometimes I want to jump right into work mode without getting ready first. So I try to take a bath or shower every single morning to get myself out of my PJs and into some real clothes. It’s simple, but it works.
Close the gap between fantasy wardrobe and real life wardrobe.
Remember the lifestyle pie chart from my capsule planner?
I fill it out a couple times a year, and still have a hard time admitting to myself that I spend 70-80% of my time at home.
Since I work from home, it makes sense. But something in me decides that’s not cool enough — so sometimes I trick myself into thinking that I spend 40% of my time at home.
Since I’m not being honest with myself, I end up with fantasy life clothes, instead of real life clothes.
I’m getting considerably better at closing that fantasy life / real life gap these days, but I absolutely still make mistakes sometimes. Closing that gap takes patience, but we can do it if we just stick with it.
Your turn! Do you work from home? I’m curious how you would answer this question: How do you motivate yourself to dress cute and comfy even if you are just going to be around the house? Got any tips and tricks on closing the gap between fantasy wardrobe and real life wardrobe?
