what to wear when it’s cold in the morning and warm in the afternoon

03/03/17

You know those days that start off cold, but then warm up by the afternoon?

This outfit was made for those days.

When it’s cold in the morning, I can layer my wool cardigan over this long sleeve top, and I’m set.

Then, when it warms up, I just shed the cardi, push my sleeves up, and I’m ready to go. My long sleeve top may look sweater-y, but it’s actually quite cool. It’s made of breathable cotton and the boxy fit allows air to freely circulate, cooling me off.

Taking it even further, I could also stash a pair of flip flops in my bag and swap out shoes too.

Here’s the outfit, sans cardigan.

Also, wearing sunglasses indoors is cool, don’t you know? :)

Switching subjects.

A few of you have been asking me about pieces I’ve taken to the tailor, so I thought I’d start pointing them out as I post them. First up? This striped top!

I found this top at Madewell a few years ago, and I fell in love with the structured fabric and the boxy fit. However, it had a high-low hem that fit awkwardly and just didn’t work for me.

But then I had an idea: I took it to my tailor and asked her to make the hem even all the way around. She took about four inches of fabric off the back, hemmed it up, and that was that!

It was a super easy, inexpensive fix, and now it’s one of my favorite tops.

I hope you have a fantastic weekend. :) See you Monday!

xo,

Hi there~I just found your blog this week. Your style is a lot like mine. I wanted to say thank you for the links to the items you show, especially that they are made responsibly and/or in the USA. This makes a huge difference to me.

    Keep up the good work!

What a great idea to get a top hemmed if you don’t like the style – I would never think of that and instead would just donate it! Do you think it’s worth the cost? I guess for an item that costs a bit more it would be!

Don’t think of it as added cost-think of it as repurposing or upcycling, which is less wasteful. And besides, how much more would it cost to reinvest in a whole new top?

Hey Kristen, I feel like it’s worth it. I already liked the shirt and this made it feel more in line with my current style. Less waste too, as Sarah mentioned. :)

Gorgeous cardigan! We’re still in coat weather, but yesterday, I definitely undid my parka, took off my gloves and put on sunglasses – in between showers. I would have worn a jacket but the forecast was rain showers, so I needed a waterproof coat. Spring is the most variable season in the UK, a definite challenge!

Caroline, as someone who is pale skinned and lives in a hot climate, could you give some advice on suncare? Thanks.

Hey Tanya, usually I pick a BB Cream or light foundation with sunscreen in it, but if I know I’m going to be out all day, I will wear a hat and/or extra sunscreen for protection. :)

This is Oklahoma right now too! 30s this morning, 70 for the high. Not to mention my situation is complicated by the fact I commute by bike to work. Difficult! I stood in front of my closet for about 10 minutes this morning pondering. I actually ended up with a VERY similar outfit! Madewell jeans, cognac boots, thicker grey top and instead of a cardigan, I chose a vest- can zip it up during the colder commute this morning. I almost think- well, I’ll come home at lunch and change to a “warm weather” outfit. But that seems silly. I’ve also had to start pulling out spring clothes but can’t quite put up the winter ones. A post on how to manage the transition when you live in places with inconsistent weather would be awesome!

I love the top in its new form! Stripes really do suit you well, and I like the less common black+grey combo going on here.

I live in southern England where currently the weather is the opposite, warm and pleasant in the morning when I walk to work, then freezing rain as I go home! Layering is a must, as well as a good coat that isn’t phased by a bit of rain.

Hemming a high-low top is a great idea, especially seeing as they’re not in style anymore, but everyone still has some in their closet! I’ve never really starting tailoring clothes, but it is something that I want to start doing!

Layering is key! T-shirt, cardigan, jacket, and jeans makes for a good cold-warm day for me.

Ahh so relevant for me – living in Los Angeles is allll about the layers! Cool in the mornings and evenings but warms up during the day (pretty much like this year round). LOVE the structure of this cardigan – so cute!!

Thanks for Everlane/striped heavy weight tee resource! First time purchase from them! Excited for its arrival! Awesome affordable price!!!! Free shipping!!

I have had a similar (lighter weight linen sweater/tee) for 2 years and I wrote on my first-time-doing -the-Capsule list yesterday, (wahoo!!!), that I need a similar one because it is the one “go-to” for everything.
Now I can switch between the 2. Exciting because there will be several options now!
    This post is great!

Grateful for your “personal shopper” ideas you offer! True Blessing, Caroline.
QUESTION: this first time capsule is taking time and thoughtful(but exciting &fun!)planning. I will keep doing it. It is awesome.
How long does it take you, Caroline? First times & now?
    Thanks!

When I was a student, I would just bite my lip and wear my warm weather clothing even if it was chilly in the morning to avoid having to carry more stuff around. That was a silly move guys.

Nowadays I would just rely on my trusty vintage denim jacket to give me the warmth and comfort and just suck it up and carry the jacket when the weather warms up. I think that’s what age does to a person lol

Just curious since you wear a lot of ankle boots. Any tips on how to avoid them rubbing your ankles too much but still exposing the skin? This is a challenge for me. I can only wear them over a fabric or sock. Thoughts?

Hey Morgan, I haven’t had much of a problem with that. Maybe because the opening is larger? One option you can try is to take a little bit of moleskin padding (like this: http://bit.ly/2fRK0fl), cut it to size, and stick it on the inside of the shoe where it’s rubbing. That should cushion the area for you. Hope that helps :)

I wish I could live in a place that I could have this option to wear a jacket or cardigan :( My city in Brazil is too hot all the time.
But I love your outfit choice! Always on point :)

Thank you so much for your blog. It has changed my thinking about shopping, something I didn’t think was possible. For me, and my family, that one shift has had such a ripple effect. I’ve stopped to consider what I NEED, what works, etc. I’ve slowed down on the shopoing. My husband and I are diligent on a path to be debt free. Thank you for your work!

Interested in suggestions for grey mornings that lead into warm sunny days. I like the cognac boots, bc I lean toward black. I need more motivation and for people that walk, not drive. I love in Athens GA, a totally walkable town. BUT– we have hills and valleys and it goes from 32-75 in hours. GO!
