Capsule #3 / Outfit 54

Last outfit of the summer!

capsule-wardrobe-blog-2104 capsule-wardrobe-blog-2107 capsule-wardrobe-blog-2106 capsule-wardrobe-blog-2105

Saying goodbye to my summer wardrobe feels like yearbook signing day at school — I’m all sentimental and sappy. Like, “Bye guys — I can’t wait to see you again next year! Stay cool!”

So let’s end on a fav.

White dress + jean vest + simple sandals.

Comfy and breezy enough to run errands in the heat, but chic enough to grab drinks on the patio later.

This wardrobe was a breakthrough. My clothes + style  finally felt all “me.” I think that’s what I love most about living with a capsule wardrobe — I learn to express more and more of my true self every time.

Actually, I uncover more and more of my true self every time. It was always there — I just had to have eyes to see it. It’s easy to have ideas about who we are, but sometimes our perception is just off.

Until we start digging a little.

Then it gets fun. Or … hard first, then fun. But it always ends up fun. :)

Do you feel like you’ve uncovered new pieces of yourself lately?

Oh! Almost forgot. It’s Friday and you know what that means — #unfancyfriday! The goal is to create an informal style lookbook from all kinds of different people + all kinds of different lifestyles. I’d love it if you’d join in today on Instagram, snap a selfie of your outfit today, and tag it #unfancyfriday.

Dress: Banana Republic (similar)

Vest: American Eagle

Cute outfit to end on! I’m new to your blog, so I don’t know what you’ve done after other capsules in the past, but do you do a round-up post of all the outfits? It would be really cool to see all the outfits in one place!

I thought you had 65 outfits to share this summer? That’s what I remember from when you said you were taking the photos. Did you end up not wearing the other 11?

      Hi Kimi!

Yep! Sometimes I realize they aren’t totally “me” + decide to pass on them. :)

I’m trying my first capsule wardrobe for this fall, and it’s definitely more difficult than I imagined! Not to pare down, but to find pieces that I truly love and are truly me and that I would wear every day. It’s a good exercise though and I’m learning a lot as I go! It’s encouraging that you said it’s “hard first, then fun.” Thanks, girl!

Love this outfit! So cute so simple yet elegant and chic. You’ll so happy to see these pieces again next year- just like returning to school and seeing old friends. Love that analogy too!
Looking forward to your fall capsule!

Hi Caroline! I found your blog through Kate over at The Small Things & just wanted to say THANK YOU! I cleaned out over 1/2 my closet, getting rid of things I didn’t love & consequently didn’t wear. As I prepared for this Fall/Winter, I took time to really consider the pieces I already had & pieces I purchased. I can’t say that I’m down to 37 pieces yet, but I have learned SO much about myself & my style through following your example & wardrobe planner. Getting dressed used to feel like such a chore & I hated having to figure out what to wear for work-my office is business (super) casual. Now, I enjoy picking out what to wear because I love everything in my closet & I feel more like myself in my clothes. Thank you for helping me regain confidence in & love for my style! Blessings to you beautiful girl!

I am definitely in think of learning and not so much fun but I am definitely seeing a light at the end of the tunnel. There is a learning curve here for sure but I think all the thinking and works is worth the result of getting to focus on other things! If I can learn how to selfie I will #unfancyfriday!

Hi Caroline, I found your blog today and have to say the idea seems brilliant!! I’m already planning my fall & winter capsules (because that’s the ones I can incorporate the most of my current clothes into). I have a question about those seasons though: The idea of having only 9 tops in summer seems okay to me because those 9 are really all you see. But 10 tops in fall would mean like 5 shirts and 4 things that go over them. For example, when I wear a hoodie you can’t see the shirt below. Okay so this probably isn’t rocket science but my question is, doesn’t that limit your range of options a whole lot since you don’t have as many tops to choose from when you combine an outfit?
This is probably a very silly question, but I’d love your insight or some tips on how you plan your fall & winter capsules :) Thanks!

This is technically “cheating” but I have 2 basic tank tops in my wardrobe for layering that I don’t count as part of the capsule. I don’t count them because I’d never wear them by themselves. That gives me a bit more wiggle room for other tops, hoodies, cardigans, etc.

Caroline, I LOVE this outfit and your capsule wardrobe concept. Have you ever thought about organizing a page on the site where someone could see all the outfits from a season’s wardrobe at one time (rather than having to scroll through all the posts)? Similar to a recipe page where you can click on breakfast and see all the recipes under that category. Then a reader could go to Summer ’14 and admire all your creative and inspiring ensembles at once to get ideas! SO looking forward to seeing your fall pieces

    Gorgeous look! :-)
Thank you so much for your post about bags some time ago, Caroline!
I looooove bags and have several favs, but still couldn’t find one that is both small enough to be versitile for both everyday use and for special occasions and big enogh to contain the important things. Then I bought MJ mini Natasha like yours and I use it every day! Perfect! :-)
And after reading your post on being yourself I took the plunge and told the hair dresser to cut my hair into a pixie. I had it long for several years after growing it long to my wedding. But I feel much more like “me” having a pixie! :-)

Oh, Caroline! Your blog is supposed to be helping me simply, right? Haha. I’ve been contemplating a denim vest ever since I bought one for my daughter at the beginning of summer because it looks so darn cute on her paired with dresses. Your last post made me start researching options and now this post just pushed me over the edge. I will soon be the proud owner of a denim vest AND a white dress to go with it. Good thing I live somewhere where the temps don’t fall below 70 until December. Now I can tell myself this is part of my “fall” capsule. :)
