Capsule #3 / Outfit 35
This is one of my top 5 outfits this summer. It’s simple + effortless. And really, really cool.
This, to me, is the type of outfit that looks intimidating. If you had shown it to me a year ago, I would have loved it … but it would have intimidated me.
The thing is, it’s not a scary outfit, when broken down piece by piece.
The top: It’s a simple cotton tank. Totally harmless. Totally normal.
The bottoms: Track pants are a bit of a statement, I get it. But look at the color (black) and fabric (cotton) — totally basic and approachable. I don’t know about you, but I don’t associate “black pants” and “flashy.” :)
The shoes: I used to feel uncomfortable in heels. That is, until I discovered the chunky heel. Chunky heels feel less dressy, so I can wear them without feeling over-dressed. I also have a rule: I never buy heels higher than 4 inches, because once they get taller, I get uncomfortable. Find your ideal heel height (even if it’s flat!) and don’t even glance at shoes that are taller.
The lesson I learned?
Anytime I think an outfit is too scary, I should try creating it with elements that are familiar and basic. It might end up being one of my favorites!
Top: J.Crew
Bottoms: Zara (similar)
Shoes: Dolce Vita
Bag: Madewell (similar)
Necklace: Anthropologie (similar)
Glasses: Warby Parker
that’s a great lesson. see, i’ve already learned something new today!
You look great! Caroline – here is my outfit intimidation – white tops. You look so good in them, but I’ve found that when I try them on they are often see through or show things that shouldn’t be shown. :) Do you have a trick? Do you wear a tank under? Or favorite brands that are a bit thicker?
I’m getting more comfortable with the fact that my preferred heel height is just FLAT! I’ve found that biting the bullet to invest in nice shoes makes my wardrobe more flexible on the casual to dressy scale. I’m also much happier and more willing to take care of them than buying a pair for one type of occasion that look nice but make me uncomfortable.
Nice heel topic, Caroline. After your post, I measured the heels of my favorite, non-flat shoes and found that my preference clocks in at around 3″. It’s a good thing to keep in mind while shoe shopping. Thanks for having me think about that.
This is such a cute outfit !!!
Would also love to know how you do your hair . It has the same French dressy / casual vibe as your clothing . Maybe you can show us how we can imitate your hair too ?? :)
thank you , leticia
amen to the chunky heels! i never learned to walk in stilettos so those block heels are my god send. and i could walk in them for hours without feeling like crying- which is always a plus ;)

I just bought some fancy track pants from Old Navy this week. I will be trying them with some of my clothes to see if they’re a good candidate for my (2-month-long) fall wardrobe. I am indeed intimidated by that!
