I don’t know about you, but I’m having the hardest time staying present with winter. All I want is sandals and shorts and spring! :)
So how about if we keep going with another dose of winter outfit inspiration? (In case you missed the last one, you can find it here — we looked at five ways to style a long cardigan.)
Whenever I’m itching for a new season, I find it calming and helpful to look back on some of my favorite outfits of the season and remember how much I loved wearing them — especially that first time! Remembering how excited I was helps me find a new appreciation and energy for them.
This time, we’ll be looking at four ways I’ve styled my beanie this fall + winter.
This little copper colored beanie became a friend to all of my neutral pieces. It brought warmth and a bit of unexpected color anywhere it went.
From top to bottom, left to right:
1 | WITH A GREY + BLACK COLOR PALETTE
Grey and black make for an easy color palette when you’re not sure what to wear. Start with a grey sweater and a pair of black jeans. Then, warm up this neutral/cool color palette with a cognac beanie and tote.
2 | CUFF-FREE
If you’re into it, try wearing your beanie sans cuff. The long beanie look is a little quirky, but sometimes it’s fun to try things that seem a little off. Counterbalance the quirk by styling it with classic pieces, like a turtleneck sweater and a pair of high rise skinnies. Then pull it all together with a tote and booties in the same shade as your beanie. (You could easily try the matching look with black or taupe accessories, too.)
3 | WITH A FLANNEL TIED AROUND YOUR WAIST
A beanie + flannel make for an understated casual-cool pairing. Start with distressed jeans and a simple white sweater, and tie a flannel around your waist. To finish the look, try matching your booties to your beanie. It serves as color “bookends” to the top and bottom of the outfit — something I’m really in to right now.
4 | PAIRED WITH OVERALLS AND A SWEATER
Overalls are a statement enough on their own, but if you want to play around even more, add a beanie on top. Keep your color palette neutral, like I did here with a grey + denim combo. Then add your statement beanie, and you’re good to go!
There you have it! Tomorrow, we’ll take a look at three ways I styled my oversized grey sweater (and I’ll share three of my favorite color palettes for it). See you then!
xo,
What a coincidence, I just bought a fisherman beanie last week in a “tobacco” colour. :) I find that when shopping for beanies, going through the men’s section can often yield much more interesting finds.
I keep a short pixie cut and often struggle to style the beanie in a “cool” way without looking like I have no hair at all. As it turns out, a snug fisherman beanie actually looks nice to me even if my hair isn’t visible!
I love wearing beanies…they make me feel safe and cozy..and not just in winter :) I like how you styled yours here. #1 is my fave! xx
I’m feeling the same about winter, but I have another month and half of chilly weather unfortunately! Beanies are a go-to for me because they are practical and are a nice accessory to an otherwise basic outfit x

Given the amount of snow just dumped on us, I can use all the winter inspiration I can get! Looks like I’ll be living in my winter wardrobe for a while yet. Love the colour of the beanie too!
I love beanies but never know how to style them. This post is perfect!

I have three beanies, they are my friends when it s cold outside…it s just that i have a problem sometimes when I need to tie up my long hair as it gets tangled at the back if i leave it loose and I look like a little boy with tied hair and beanie, mostly when it s very cold outside and I hate to put style before my comfort….I dont know…maybe some day you will be able to show us also how would you style it with the coat/jacket on and a tied hair example.
Thanks
Andreea
I’ve always been a fan of the slouchy knitted beret (instant fix for a bad hair day, or just to throw on to go run errands!), but I’ve stayed away from beanies after some bad experiences with the super small, short, skull-cap beanies that were popular in the 00s – these do NOT work well with long thick hair, or at least not mine. But the past few years, I’ve really been digging the slouchy beanie look and finally picked up one for myself, and I’m really loving the look.
Thanks for the inspiration!
My fine hair and beanies never get along great, but I do love the look of them. Slouchy beanies work well though!
Ah i love a copper-brown beanie, so much so that I actually made one. I need to dig it out when winter arrives :) I’d love for you to check it out here >http://wllwproject.com/playing-barista-at-home/
Mun! You made that one?? It is super cute! :)
I’ve been LIVING in beanies this winter! Such an easy way too add a little something extra, and it doesn’t hurt that they help mask messy hair, too … Such great tips, lady!

I love beanies but with all the downpour in Portland,OR a soggy beanie is not cute. Anybody else have another alternative for headgear in the rain ?
Hey Mari, I would think that beside a hood on your rain jacket, a waterproof beanie could work (http://bit.ly/2lpXaa6), or maybe a trapper hat? Good luck! :)
Thank you so much, I had no idea these existed ! Lifesaver :)
I have a pale grey beanie, it is snug enough to wear under my parka hood on a rainy/sleety day, so warm and waterproof. I have 2 pom pom beanies that are actually ski hats with an extra layer of fleece inside for very cold days and a grey felt, lined baker boy cap that looks OK with hair up.
Our weather has got a little milder in the UK this week, so I’m enjoying swapping my winter coats for a pleather jacket, but still with hat, scarf, gloves and a jumper underneath. I also managed to wear hi tops rather than furry, winter boots, so it’s injected a little variety into my winter outfits. It’s quite likely I will need to go back into full winter gear at some point, before spring starts though.
I LOVE the last outfit! Your photos are such an awesome quality too xx
When I got to see Hamilton a few months ago, the girl sitting in front of me was wearing an un-cuffed beanie that completely blocked my view of the stage! I had to watch whilst leaning against my husband (not totally a bummer) and resisting the urge to smash it down onto her head so I could see :) Maybe not the most appropriate thing to wear in a theater.
Love the overalls look with the sweater and beanie! I’ve seen overalls worn so great, but I’m still chewing my lip over here debating whether or not they’d fit my personality.
