This week, we’ve been looking back over some of my winter outfits, in hopes of finding some new inspiration for winter while we wait for spring. First we looked at five ways to wear a long cardigan, then yesterday we looked at four ways to style a beanie.
Today, we’re tackling the greys. We’ve all got a little grey in our wardrobe and, while neutrals are amazing on their own, sometimes you just want to shake ’em up with a bit of color.
So, let’s look at my favorite grey sweater and how I used color around it to create three different looks.
Let’s jump in:
GREY + RUST + DENIM BLUE
Hello warm, festive vibes! This was my Thanksgiving Day outfit and while the palette is simple, it’s a great mix of cozy (rust) and modern (grey).
Start with a pair of basic skinnies. Then add a rust colored tee and top it with a grey sweater. If you’ve got side vents, unzip ’em so your rust tee peeks out a bit more. Finally, echo the rust color with your tote and booties.

DENIM BLUE + MULBERRY + DEEP BROWN + GREY
Talk about a surprising color palette! I don’t know why, but I always felt weird about putting brown and grey together — until this outfit! Now I do it all the time (and my closet has more possibilities because of it).
Try it for yourself. Start with a grey sweater and put a mulberry flannel button-down underneath. Or you could use any ol’ top in a similar color. Make sure your mulberry top peeks out at the bottom. Then “bookend” the look with a brown purse and booties. (Don’t forget cozy socks!)

SOFT BLACK + CREAM + GREY
Okay, admittedly this color palette isn’t much of a “color” palette. It’s neutral as can be. But I wanted to include it because the styling is so different from the last two outfits.
If you’re traveling somewhere soon, try this as a template for your travel day outfit — it’s simple, chic, and easy.
Start with black skinnies, add your grey sweater on top, and then finish with simple white sneakers. Complete the look with classic Wayfarer sunnies and a black crossbody bag.

And there you have it!
So tell me: Find any color palettes you want to try? Grey is so versatile — do you have any favorite color palettes to share? And I’m curious, do you pair brown and grey together or do you stay away from it?
Happy weekend!
xo,
I’m not really a pink girl… but last year I found an amazing scarf with greys, camel and a slight touch of blush pink. I fell instantly in love. I paired it w grey sweater, cognac/camel bag n booties and denim skinnies. It’s a great go-to outfit.
Lovely colour palettes, Caroline. I wear so much grey… my neutrals are greys, navy, some black, dark brown or white. I tend to mix in berry colours, aqua/greens or come spring/summer blues if I want more colour. Such a soft, easy colour to wear.
I love the combinations and the grey! Lately I noticed more greys in my closet, in al 50 shades of it :))
Happy weekend!
Grey is my favorite color, especially for clothes, so I love all these outfits :)
Loving the pop of pink and rust in there. I’ve been obsessing over jewel tone pinks and reds lately and I never cared for them before. So weird. A++ to all of those outfits!
I’m the same way about brown and grey! Sometimes it weirds me out, but sometimes I go for it, haha. This sweater is super cute by the way.
In this outfit, I did brown and grey and black…GOING CRAZY. ;)

what size is that grey sweater? It looks like maybe you sized up so you could wear it over other shirts? Love these outfits!
Hi Rae! Yes, I ordered the 6 :)
Good morning, and thank you for the post. Interestingly, until I found your blog I had the opposite problem. . .I would purchase “fun” colored items and patterns and had few neutrals, so I was all “pop” and no base (read, confusing mix of patterns and color). I have found your blog really helpful in selecting good basics in neutral colors. Just this morning I was able to pull together a “look” in less than five minutes (bc, you know, LATE)–[black vest, light gray scarf and beanie, dark gray sweater, black skinnies, and gray tennis shoes]. I looked pulled together instead of like a clown. . .all thanks to you!
Oooh, I really love all these color palettes! I’ve actually been on a mission to add more gray to my wardrobe since I have so much black, lol.

ahhh love all these but especially the little peek of colour at the side of the sweater on the first and second. I have a ‘burnished copper’ thermal base layer in my basket that my fingers are twitching for
I love to pair my lighter greys with navy and my darker greys with pinks.
Grey and brown are a tough sell for me… I think the second option works because brown is so dark it’s almost black, I may have to try it. But pairing with a lighter brown like rust in the first option – not sold on it…
Thank you for the inspirations, grateful to be along on your journey!
I love grey! You can go all the way with grey tones. Like a light outfit wearing white skinny jeans, a light blue button down and a grey cardigan. Or grey skinny jeans in combination with a coral blazer. Yours are some really cool color combinations I haven’t tried out yet, really loving the rust combination!!!
oh I need to try out the mulberry combination!

Grey and pink, grey and yellow (my all time favourite combination involving grey), grey and orange, grey and teal/turquoise
All of these colour palettes are amazing, I’m in love with the 2nd one!

Nearly half of my closet is black and grey, so I’m a huge fan! Like HUGE. My go-to uniform is black bottoms+middle colour+grey men’s varsity sweatshirt (American Apparel), with middle colours like berry pink, baby pink, burgundy, various shades of teal, and sky blue.
I sometimes wear my rhum belt from Everlane for contrast (so grey and brown are totally okay in my books). I use jewellery for a pop of colour when I’m monochromatic (e.g., raw pink ruby studs, burgundy garnet chip studs, or smokey quarts pendant earrings). I used to love grey on the bottom and black on the top, too, but I outgrew my grey skinnies. :/
But yeah. I love grey. Grey t-shirt, grey work sweater, grey sweatshirt, grey skinnies, grey coats, grey everything. <3
The last one is my favourite and what I werar every day but the combination with mulberry is so , so pretty!
xx.

Where did you get the watercolor scheme dots?
I know this is an older post…. but it came up when I was searching out Veja sneakers! I’m due to replace my old ones, and have my eye on the Veja Volley sneakers. I was wondering how yours are holding up? Any thoughts on them?
BTW, my husband is always teasing me that I wear so much grey – but I can’t help it! As you’ve shown here, it’s just so versatile! I love how the brown tones warm it up. :)
I’ve just found your blog, its so interesting to me because I’ve let my hair go Gray! I love the color it’s a very light silvery gray with a bit of brown in it still. So I’ve had to redo my wardrobe and added grey as a neutral for basics. Now I’m trying to find colors to go with the new me! My eyes are green, so green and gray are beautiful together. Also a cinnamon brown with gray is gorgeous! Surprises like taupes and gray with a pop of color like sky blue. I don’t look good anymore in black, white or cream, so thank you for this blog. :))
