With such a drastic season change, there are actually very few pieces I’m carrying over from summer to fall.
And also … I’m ready for a break from these clothes.
Which is perfectly okay.
In fact, it’s why I like having four seasons of clothing. The switch up every three months keeps my wardrobe dynamic and lively + it gives me a sense of renewal.
Bottom line? This whole capsule wardrobe experience is meant to be a happy one.
It’s not about bashing shopping or fashion.
And it’s definitely not a competition of who can be the “most minimalist.”
It’s about striking the balance between keeping it minimal + having fun with fashion.

So … here are the four pieces that I’m carrying over from summer to fall. That’s right, there’s only four. But don’t panic, that doesn’t mean I bought 33 new items for fall. :) I have a bunch of pieces from last fall and winter to carry over — you just haven’t seen them yet. (But I can’t wait to show you — tomorrow!!)
Fun fact: my chambray shirt + leather jacket + spot dot flats have been in all of my capsule wardrobes so far — they are awesome.
chambray shirt — jcrew
moto jacket — zara (similar)
spot dot flats — madewell (in a new pretty color for fall) — or — similar at ASOS for less
white tank — jcrew (similar)

I love these classic pieces! Bring on fall….
I can see why that leather jacket is moving over- it’s fab! I’m really curious how you’re going to layer up for the cooler weather. I’ve paired my wardrobe way down too and am a little worried I’ll have too many similar/ repeat outfits. Cant wait to be inspired :)

Chambray shirts are definitely a staple of any season! I love mine so much and have multiple colors. So versatile. A chambray obviously made the cut for my fall capsule wardrobe as well :)

Can’t wait! I’ve started drafting my ideas for this fall wardrobe, but waiting to see what you reveal before I solidify my list! :)
One thing I really like about your approach is the emphasis on making it fun and work for your lifestyle. It is a template open to interpretation based on individual needs. That makes it such a doable plan. Thank you .
Also can’t wait to see what you have in store for fall! I just started my 1st capsule wardrobe this week and already feel more stylishly creative! Thanks for this great blog!
Great choices. It’s inspiring for my outfit tomorrow :)

Caroline, can I ask you how your organize your storage? (I am, embarrassingly, a person who has stalled on many a grand plan when I get to the organizing stage…uncertainty of vision on that front just stymies me).
Do you store by type (tops, bottoms, etc), or by color? or by season?
I’m culling and packing into storage today and am moving from sweaters to blouses and I just was suddenly not sure.
Hi Emily!
I’m not too particular when it comes to storing my items. I have two under-the-bed boxes, and I store them loosely based on season — summer in one half of the box, spring in the other half of the box, etc. :)

Thanks Caroline! Season(ish) organization it is. So… not to be stalkerish or anything, but can I also ask you where you’re keeping your active capsule? Do you function out of a closet, or dresser drawers, or both? If just a closet, do you hang your tee shirts and jeans?
I was thinking I might move the capsule stuff to the (tiny NYC) closet, and use the dresser for lounge/workout/undies….that make sense?
Hi Emily!
I keep most of my wardrobe hanging in my closet, and then I keep my workout clothes + PJs in a chest of drawers. :)

I did it! It’s ….sublime! For the past two days I’ve been sneaking into my room for no reason at all, just to look in my closet and sigh. It’s so…calm in there. And you should SEE my chest of drawers! Holy crap it’s nice in there. Socks, separated by use (colorful, workout, wooly). Scarves by color! A whole drawer for lounge/workout bottoms! A whole drawer for lounge/workout TOPS! My two kids were messing around the other day in there when one of them opened my closet to hide – he’s 4 – and stopped short said: “Wow mommy! It’s so BIG in here! It’s beeeauuutifullll!” I agree. Thanks again for the idea/inspiration/guidance.
So excited to see what you pick for fall! Fall is my favorite season for fashion and I could use some inspiration!

I can’t wait until tomorrow!
Hey! I love your blog and the concept that you have with keeping a very basic outfit! What do you use to create your pictures on the same image..? Do you use Photoshop?
Thanks for the help!!

That moto jacket is so cool! I’ve wanted a cognac faux leather jacket for AGES but I haven’t been able to find one that I like and can afford. Yours is super cool and will add so much to your fall outfits! I can’t wait to see the big reveal tomorrow! :)
Your D’Orsay flats – I’ve read blistering reviews, but you must love them to carry them forward each season. Did you suffer any woes? Looking forward to tomorrow (and I love love love your Zara jacket).
Hi Amy!
I do love them — I personally didn’t have any issues with breaking them in or getting blisters. They fit like a charm right off the bat.
