Oh that handsome guy on my left? That’s my husband, Aaron. If you were ever wondering who takes all the photos for Unfancy, that’s him. He’s my favorite person on this planet. When we’re together, we feel like a couple of kids who can take on this world. We’ve been married for about 3 years, and every morning when I open my eyes, I get excited like it’s Christmas morning because he’s next to me.
When I started Unfancy, I proposed the idea of doing some outfit photos together at some point, because as a couple, I feel like it can be tricky to wear styles that compliment each other — we’re not talking about being matchy-matchy or taking this too seriously, but we are talking about looking like you both came from the same stye universe. Lucky for all of us, Aaron was immediately on board. So here we are. Hi!
These are typical outfits for a dinner + movie date at The Drafthouse. Aaron was way more into movies than I was when we first got married (he’s kind of a movie snob), but I’ve come around, and now we can debate the plot holes all night long. :) The Drafthouse is our theatre of choice in Austin because we can order food, fancy restaurant style, during the movie. One Godfather pizza, please’n’thanks.
Aaron’s look: When he started upgrading his wardrobe, these were the first three things on his list: a good white v-neck tee + a dark wash jean in a slimmer fit + black sneakers that could go casual or a little bit nicer. If you’re wanting to help your guy upgrade his style, I’d say this is the place to start, too. Top: HM / Bottoms: Cotton On / Shoes: Aldo / Watch: Fossil
My look: When we’re going to the movies, I’ve learned to always wear jeans (even in the summer) because I will inevitably get cold. But I’ve also learned to wear dark colors, because eating pizza in a dark movie theatre means I’ll inevitably get pizza sauce on me. You never knew I was so strategic in my outfit choices did you? Top: American Eagle / Necklace: Madewell / Bottoms: Gap / Bag: Marc Jacobs / Shoes: Madewell
Why they work together: Both outfits are a similar style — understated + minimal + cool. Both outfits are operating in a similar general color palate (which sometimes can be overkill, but this time it works). Both outfits have elements made out of similar, casual fabrics.
What do you think? Are you on board with this idea of couple style?

You two are so cute together !
I like this trendy unexpensive wardrobe + expensive bag, it’s smart !
I pretty have the same look as Aaron. I love Uniqlo’s jeans wcich are well tailored (I don’t know whether you have this japanese brand in the US) + Levis white shirt. But my shoes and watch have more funny colors as pop of colors.
At the risk of sounding dramatic, I wanted to tell you that you have changed my life. Finding your site was an answer to a prayer. I had just moved into a much smaller place (450sq feet vs 2100 square feet) and I was appalled that how much stuff I had. My anxiety was through the roof! I stumbled upon the idea of the capsule wardrobe while I was on vacation, and immediately went to work finding inspiration for my style. I came home cleared the closet (I kept in 20 pieces for the capsule) and went shopping. I now have two capsules : a 36 piece capsule for work and a 15 piece that I used for home and weekend. I am planning on to pare down the weekend capsule to 7 items since I don’t really need many options. Since starting this journey, I have decluttered in other areas in my life too. My home is neat and organized, I do yoga to de clutter my mind and I spend money on experiences, not stuff. My anxiety levels are lower than they have been in years! I have a closet I love, an apartment I love and most importantly, I life I love. Thank you for giving me the courage to live a full life with less stuff.
Hi Caroline,
just wanted to let you know, that I have been following and enjoying your blog. Thank you for the opportunity :)
Found your blog last week. It’s great! Love the couples idea. Don’t know of anyone else who’s doing it.
Haha, boyfriend and I don’t have an intentional ‘couple style’ but we are each other’s favourite shopping partners and love the same stores and pieces. This mean we end up walking out of the house coordinating or full-out matching half the time! I don’t mind. :)
Ya’ll are so cute! My partner and I “match” like this often, but not on purpose. It just turns out that one of the things we share is a preference for minimal, comfortable styles. And we both like green, which has led to more than one accidental matchy-matchy moment.
Oh yes! I think the couple-style posts are a great addition to Un-Fancy! So fun to see you together in the photos :)
LOVE your wonderful couple style, honey! You and Aaron are adorable together! :) Katooshie

It does work! Like you said, it’s not matchy matchy, but both looks are of the same style, nice and casual. The other day my boyfriend realised we were practically wearing the same clothes – accidentally, but fortunately for us it was just inside the house. We both had same length black shorts and a dark red tank top. Would have been embarrassing had somembody seen us! But I think it looks worse when a couple’s outfits don’t compliment each other, so definitely on board with a little matching.
You two look great together! So happy! My husband has a uniform of beige ish chinos and dark tops as it suits his shape so all I had to do was make sure I never bought beige chinos for me. We are both neutrals but he likes a pattern which jazzes us both up a bit! Enjoy the film xx
Great post! My husband and I unintentionally match often, ha ha. He just says he’s trying to be as “cool” as me. But it’s definitely true that you have to match to some degree, style-wise. There are times my husband or I have to change because one of us is more casual or dressy than the other, which makes it look like we’re going totally different places!
I love this look and your blog – I just discovered it and find it so inspiring. I started purchasing fewer clothes I love, and buying ethically made a few years ago and my closet looks so much better and I feel better about and in my clothes. So happy to have discovered your blog!
I love these outfits! You two a beautiful couple. – Stephanie of Project Wanderlust.

I found your blog a couple weeks ago and have really enjoyed your great photos and the whole concept of capsulizing the wardrobe! I have GAD and very often find myself using shopping as therapy. I don’t enjoy my closet, instead I feel overwhelmed by it. When I feel stressed, I want to run out and go shopping. This isn’t a great way of handling it at all. I saw that you struggled with anxiety also and I just love how you changed things up to take control. I am feeling very inspired, so thank you for your honesty in sharing! I am still mulling over how or what these ideas will mean for me but I do know that I will approach my Fall wardrobe in a different way.
I also wanted to mention that I did NOT buy anything BUT I saw that American Eagle is doing an extra 50% off sale stuff plus free shipping. The black shorts you have are $10! Other great deals too. I thought you might want to share with your readers. Thanks for the great blog, I will continue to follow!
This is a very cute post. The only time my fiance and I decide to coordinate is when we’re on a date. Grocery trips, errands or taking a walk are usually when we don’t look like we go together at all. It’s funny that I’ve learned to let it go when he decides to wear a god awful old t shirt with a pair of board shorts and black sneakers. Hahaha…you pick your battles, ya know?
Great post, thanks to both of you! I hope you’ll do many more such posts, for “occasions” too, like attending weddings, holiday celebrations, etc.
The first thing my fiance noticed about me, he says, is that I had a feminine yet classic minimal mix ‘n match wardrobe of jackets, blouses, and pencil skirts (both casual & dressy) that he liked a lot (I find skirts more comfortable than pants to wear, except for walking in woods for which I have a pair of jeans). His wardrobe is minimal, too: he has a couple of different pants styles he likes, a couple of shoe styles, a couple of jacket styles he likes, plus several crew-neck short-sleeve tees and several cotton turtlenecks. He has a couple of dress-shirts and a couple of suits and dinner jacket added to that mix and he’s ready for every occasion. We both like to wear primarily navy, red, dark green, and white. From the very beginning we unintentionally always looked like we “belonged together” no matter where we went. Then when he updated his tees and turtlenecks he started buying one for me, too, so we were starting to look a tad matchy-matchy. What saves us from looking like a walking Rorschach print is that he always wears pants and I always wear pencil skirts–but we really don’t care what other people think, we just enjoy being together & appreciate each other’s style.
I’d love to see and read more about Aaron’s wardrobe, too, and if he approaches wardrobing the same or different from you. Thanks again, Caroline!
I just started reading your blog. I LOVE your style and feel so inspired! Could you write a post on your go to cosmetics? Your look is so natural – I especially like your lip color – so subtle.
Thanks,
Laura

You guys are adorable together, dear Caroline!! Love both of your outfits; nothing over-the-top, but you look casually chic, and yes!…like a real couple!! Kudos to Aaron for getting his “model” on today!! ;)

Hi Caroline!
First of all, I have to thank you. Fortunately I found out about you while I was reading Into Mind today, and it came right on time. I’ve read almost the entire blog at once, now it’s 3 pm where I live but I feel so good knowing that I’ll start something new when I wake up tomorrow. I finally found the perfect minimalist technique for me, and I owe this to you. The best thing is that our style is very similar, so I can get the most of the experience + inspiration. The worse is I live in a different hemisphere and can’t wait to see your winter capsule wardrobe!
Please keep up the good work, you’re doing great.
Also, you’re beautiful, girl!
This is so cute! I’ve never thought about coordinating outfits with my husband intentionally, although he does sometimes change so we look more in sync dressy/casual wise. I can’t wait to see more photos of y’all :D
You two are so precious :) Love the way your styles aren’t too matchy but just go so well together :) We just went to the Drafthouse for the first time last weekend and loved it!
GET OUT. you two are so cute. love this. absolutely loving your blog. i haven’t made a capsule wardrobe yet, but two weeks after i discovered your new blog i purged my closet and gave away over 75% of my clothes to some girlfriends. we had a big try fashion show in my bedroom :)
You two are so cute!
Hi, I think it would be great if you did a post or series that went more in depth about how to upgrade a guy’s style. What else are you and he planning?
