Let’s take a break from all the wardrobe planner talk. I think a fall sneak peek is in order, don’t you?
Here are a few B&W pieces that have caught my eye lately:
Vegan Leather Skirt — Thinking of dressing it down like this.
Vans Hi-Tops — Going to be wearing these like erryday!
Black Jeans — Like the reviews say, the fit + sizing is weird. I had to try on a bunch and ended up jumping up two sizes. But the wash + price make it worth the effort.
Sweatshirt — Can’t beat that price or that coziness.
Ankle Booties — Love these for dressing up a basic outfit. Should I go black or oxblood?
Anything on your shopping list that you’ve just got to share with us? Do tell!
Eeeep! I’ve been waiting for a post like this. I hope you share more this month :) I’m really loving your choices so far – especially the sweatshirt. Black and white are my go-to colors for fall.
Currently dying over two J. Crew Factory sweaters – one in an oatmeal color with camel colored elbow patches, and one in a burgundy with big cables. I am also looking for an office-appropriate wool dress, and a pair of flat heeled ankle booties that can do everything.
Just printed out the wardrobe planner for the first time, excited to use it to be a more focused fall/winter wardrobe shopper!
love all of these! This season is my first using your capsule wardrobe concept and I have been so excited for September to start! Since I’m new to the game, I went with a primarily black and white color palate. I too purchased a vegan mini and can’t wait to wear it – but mine is a-line. thanks for sharing all your fashion advice – you and your blog rock!
Loved it! Can’t wait to see your choices!
I went style jcrew crazy and got two pairs of wool ankle trousers and a few t-shirts and a silk blouse. Then some vintage wool blazers because the fits are so classic and tailored. Also suede flats and suede heels and leather sneakers from shoemint. I just need a couple more blouses for work and I’ll be all set!
Your capital is looking fantastic!! I love those high to sneakers.
Hi,
thank you for this inspiring blog!
I’ll try the capsule wardrobe concept this fall for the first time too. Yesterday I bought a pretty similiar jeans like this black one above (at H&M) and I had the same problem (I’m glad that I’m not the only one). I normally fit into size 27 but this jeans I had to buy size 29. @.@ weird
Affectionate regards from Dresden, Germany!!
Pretty excited about this jacket from Anthropologie. Looks even better in real life. http://www.anthropologie.com/anthro/product/clothes-petite-jacket/4115346820890.jsp?color=005#/
Also looking forward to wearing these a lot . . . . http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/converse-x-missoni-chuck-taylor-all-star-high-top-sneaker-women/3746540?origin=keywordsearch-personalizedsort&contextualcategoryid=2375500&fashionColor=&resultback=0&cm_sp=personalizedsort-_-searchresults-_-1_1_D
Oxblood boots for a hint of color! I printed and used your capsule wardrobe planner today. Only took me 30 minutes and I had such clarity on my personal style. Plus, I now have a very focused shopping list and didn’t even realize I already have some great pieces in my closet! A huge thank you to you and your blog! I am going to clean out my closet and skinny it down. My husband is also quite excited about that!
Like the black bootie. LOVE the oxblood!
Thanks for the sneak peak!
I love what you have so far! A lot of my Fall capsule is falling into the black/grey/white color scheme too so I recently picked up two utility blouses from Loft in rich teal and burgundy. I love the material and fit. Should be able to pair them with lots of different bottoms. I also really like certain items from Lou and Grey (Loft), but again, pretty much everything in the Fall line is all black and white. It took me a while to figure out the sizing from that line and some things just don’t work for my body. But what I have, I LOVE. Also, on my list was a pair of shoes similar to the Sam Edelman Petty boot. I ended up with a grey (really taupe) bootie from Gap that cost much less after sales and discounts. I’m happy with them but since I live in a such a warm climate, it will probably be November before I’m really able to test them. I only have one or two more things to hunt for- such a great feeling :) Thanks for sharing your items, Caroline. I only wish I could pull of some interesting shoes, but I’m pretty sure I would break my neck chasing after all of my kids. Someday…..
These are cute! I think my fall wardrobe is going in a reaaaally different direction than my summer one – in summer I’m all black and white, with pops of bright color. For fall all the stuff I want is navy, gray, dark green, purple, etc. IDK why. One of the fun things about this capsule wardrobe is I don’t feel too bad if I retire things for a season because they aren’t a color I want to wear – I used to feel like I needed to wear something year-round for it to be worth it. Now I just figure I’ll pick it up again next spring/summer.
(Faux) leather leggings. I’ve wanted them forever. Until I switched to a capsule wardrobe they seemed like an unaffordable extravagance. Now that I’ve pared things down (thanks quite a bit to Un-Fancy!) I can see how they’d make an excellent investment in my wardrobe.
Nice pieces, Caroline! I LOVE those Vans/Madewell hi-tops!
For fall, I’d like to bring a bit more tan/caramel color into my line-up. I like J. Crew’s merino wool ‘Tippi’ sweater. I’ll also be sporting some leopard and plaid. Not necessarily together, but maybe. ;-)
Personally, I’d go with the black bootie as it is already a bit of a statement with its design and will be way more flexible in black, i.e.– it feels weird to wear oxblood in spring or summer, but black is fine.
I’m so glad I came across your wardrobe planner! It’s helped me out so much when it comes to shopping and my wardrobe. This fall I realy need some good black ankle boots but with a mid-heel. I’m trying to get into wearing more heels and I think a small-ish heel will help bridge the gap between flats and big-girl AND be keep the comfort level up while the style meter goes up too! #FTW
Such amazing picks! I love the leather skirt! I haven’t buy anything for autumn yet, I can’t wait to get a new scarf and coat, though! x

I like the boots in oxblood. SO CUTE.
I’ve been trying to find a pleated leather skirt but hasn’t been an easy “battle”. Loving this one! Have a great weekend.

Wow, I love those vans; I’d totally wear them just about every day too! I prefer the booties in black, but I’m never one to lean towards brownish colors (even when they’re kind of redish too). Plus with good monochrome outfits you can never go wrong.
I’d get the oxblood booties–they have a chunky Black heel!–and an oblong scarf with Black and Burgundy in it OR an oblong leopard print scarf with both Brown & Black in it. Anytime I’d want to wear a black bag and those oxblood booties at the same time, I’d wear that scarf to tie everything together. If it’s too hot to wear the scarf around your neck, then tie the scarf in a cute knot or bow on a strap of the black bag, or use it to tie your hair back in a ponytail, or wear it like a headband, or tie it around the crown of your hat, or around your waist as a belt.
Look at this piece of gorgeous-ness I found on Amazon:

I’ve been in search of a great sweatshirt and so far they have either been too oversized or very tailored, where did you find the one in this post? It looks perfect!
I need to learn how to wear booties so I can buy them too! I had a leather skirt that I WORE OUT last year so that is an excellent pick! What I am really looking forward to picking out this year is some beautiful outerwear since I never save to splurge on that. Thank you for sharing!
If you already got a pair of black booties in your capsule… oxblood… otherwise black black black!
So excited to see the start to your fall capsule! I’m so excited to try this concept out for myself !
Hiya! I’ve been enjoying Unfancy for a short while, as well as admiring all the positive feedback that is posted daily! As a capsule wardrobe amateur, I’m trying to absorb as much information as possible before really diving in to the planning stages for the upcoming season. In various hyperlinks around the site, there have been posts about how to start your capsule adventure, and how to add to it, and so on. However, I distinctly remember a post about a “rule of threes,” and how to choose pieces that work together. Unfortunately, I don’t have that specific post bookmarked, nor do I remember when it was posted. Could you (Caroline) or anyone else be able to point me in the right direction, and/or let me know about similar posts that I may have missed? Thanks so much!
Is this the post you meant?

I’ve found all the “Capsule Wardrobe 101” posts to be really helpful.
I love the idea of black jeans, but I feel like the execution is so hard! The wash that you have found seems really wearable, though…
I am loving the idea of sweatshirts for fall/winter. I am envisioning basic grey sweatshirts with a scarf, dark skinnies, and boots. I want to be cozy and comfy but still lookin’ cute. I would vote oxblood on the boots. At first I thought the oxblood might be hard to match, but when I looked at the color online it seems a lot more neutral than I imagined. I think it would be a beautiful color for Fall!

on my list are a plain grey sweatshirt (may try and hunt down that aerie one!) and cognac coloured/dark brown ankle booties!
I just discovered your blog the other day and I love your style! I was just telling my friends how I would literally wear every piece in your wardrobe and how I may or may not own quite a part of it already ;) Can’t wait for your fall capsule to come out!
This is my first capsule wardrobe, and your blog has been such a big motivator for me to put more thought and planning into my clothes. Since I’m about to have a baby I can’t justify spending a lot of money on new clothes that I may not fit in later. So, I’ve focused my money on getting some quality shoes and a new bag (Coach! First nice bag I’ve ever bought) and I’m shopping at consignment/thrift stores for shirts, pants, etc. I’m going with warm earth tones + navy + coral/peach for fall, and having a narrow color palette makes shopping so much easier!
These are my new shoes! And yes, I realize that I just bought some “blue suede shoes.” http://www.ghbass.com/product/lane+ballet.do?sortby=ourPicks&from=fn
Oh my goodness those boots in oxblood! Love them.
I’m eyeing a marled purple sweater from Old Navy. It might be a big snugger than I want, though–and the sleeves are long so I can’t go up a size. Thinking about it. I was noticing their hi-top sneaks, too! But I have a pair of camo-skull Converse hi-tops that I’m going to dig out and try again this fall. I’ve also got some wine-coloured fake-suede booties I picked up super-cheap last year that I’m looking forward to wearing again.
I’ve never been so excited to move into fall clothes! It’s really funny that now that I’ve cleaned out my closet, I’m left with more clothes than I thought I had, if you know what I mean. I thought I’d have to start from pretty much nothing, but those pieces I love were in there, just waiting to be used more. I bought one skirt and maybe a new sweater, necklace and bracelet will join.
I just wanted to add that my husband told me yesterday he loves how I’ve been dressing lately–that I am dressing more my age and seem more comfortable and confident. Thanks for your inspiration! :)
I’m voting for oxblood! (Though I do hate the name.)
I LOVE that “leather” skirt. I am still traumatized by Catholic school and can’t wear pleated skirts. Ours was grey and we got our moms to stitch down the pleats so they’d lay flat, and it’s a cute look but I can’t get over the fact that I had to wear that thing every school day for four years.
The thing I’m most excited about in my fall capsule is these boots I found on 6pm.com. I found a $500 version from L.A.M.B. but couldn’t rationalize it, so I settled for a much cheaper similar pair:

I am SO excited to complete my capsule wardrobe! I am about 75% done! Living south of Boston, the weather is never predictable, so my capsule could take me from October 1st (or whenever September decides to feel like Autumn) through March! Oh the joys of a New England “Autumn;” it’s 87 and sunny out there right now and tomorrow could be 67 and rainy, who knows! :)
This blog has opened my eyes and has changed my way of thinking about shopping for clothing! Thank you for helping de-clutter my closet and simplifying my life. It was very easy for me to follow your steps and I found it liberating and exciting to cleanse my closet of everything that I do not need anymore or just right this season. Also, when I was shopping for my fall capsule, I had a different mentality, I had my notes with me and asked myself “do I need this? How many outfits can I make with this piece?” This made it so easy to shop and I didn’t have buyers remorse! It’s a glorious feeling!
I discovered your site via my daughter’s blog a few weeks ago. I just wanted to say thanks for the capsule concept! I’m in my 50’s, so my style is a bit different….BUT I do tend to go towards solids over lots of pattern and have similar colors and fabrics in my clothing choices! I, too, live in Austin and know it can be hot or warm all the way up thru October. I modified my fall capsule to 2 months (early TX fall) now and then Nov/DEC as late fall will get a bit of a changeover. It was nice to see I can focus on fewer outfits when all that other stuff is packed away! I was also pleased to see that I have plenty of scarves and jewelry to add color. I have some flat ankle booties that are that oxblood color I got on sale last spring. Kinda wish I had gone with black! Anyway, I rarely comment on blogs, but just wanted to say THANKS for the inspiration!
I discovered your blog last month and have fallen in love with it. Its a site that I faithfully check to see what new things you have posted about your lifestyle and capsule. Honestly, I haven’t been to excited for fall, but after seeing your sneak peak choices, I am ready for the fall weather wear. Put it with anything pumpkin flavored and I will be ready to watch the leaves change colors. Thanks for the new found joy of fall weather!
I found a vegan leather skirt at Nordstrom Rack for half of the price of the one from Victoria’s Secret! I’m also looking to purchase a buffalo print button up shirt. I like the one from Madewell but the price is a bit steep. I need them to have a sale!
I am on a super-tight budget (my hubs is in grad school) so when it comes to shopping, I have to save-save-save! My favorite affordable shoe brand is Madden Girl – it fits my style and usually I can wear the shoes to work (in a business office) or at play. My shoe purchase for my winter wardrobe were these cute little black Madden Girl booties (“Ginger”)… I can’t wait to wear them! And I think I paid $30 for them after a sale price and coupon.
I, too, am in need of some of these illusive black skinny jeans but I can’t find any that fit me just right!!!
Those booties are SO cute! Great buy!
Awesome! I’ve already bought a few of the same/similar items! The leather skirt I got was from Zara though – a little more simple – http://www.zara.com/ca/en/woman/skirts/a-line-faux-leather-skirt-c269188p2106030.html I feel like you might like that one too… I’m really eyeing up a pair of Nike black and white sneakers too :)
Can’t wait to see how you style that white sweatshirt– just got one and am already excited about all of the outfit possibilities :) And I wear a ton of oxblood clothes-wise, so I would definitely get more use out of black booties myself! Don’t think I could rock that red head-to-toe :)
Loving the ankle booties, dear Caroline!! I’d do oxblood – seriously, I’m looking for my own pair! – just because black is somehow more expected…and accessories have a great way of adding personality when they’re a little UNexpected!!
