Winter wardrobe planning is in full swing over here! (If you’re curious why so early — here’s your answer.)
I have the clearest vision for my winter wardrobe. Two words: comfort + warmth.
Shearling Coat (similar here or here) | Warmth. Enough said.
Marled Sweater | Comfort is top on my list, and when I want a comfortable outfit, I want a big sweater. This one is from Madewell, but I’m also thinking I’ll try the Lou & Grey line from LOFT for the first time. Their tunic sweaters — like this one and this one — are calling my name.
Dress Booties |Remember that time I was looking for dressy warm boots? Well I think these are the boots I was looking for. I love that these can go dressy or casual — the shape is sharp and chic, but the suede keeps the vibe soft and earthy. And — 3 inch heels! I can do that!
Soft Bralette | Winter brings out the lazy side of me. To the point where I don’t even want to wear a real bra. I’ve decided to embrace this. This bralette feels like a sports bra, but it’s still a little sexy.
Boyfriend Belt | I’ve never accessorized with belts before, but this one in particular seems tomboyish and easygoing. I’m thinking of pairing it with distressed jeans and a slouchy sweater.
Dr. Marten Boots | I haven’t decided yet, but the nostalgic side of me is dying to rock Doc Martens this winter. I’m sold on their comfort, but they may be a little too punk for my style — what do you think?
I’d love to hear what you think about these pieces — and what you’re looking at for your winter capsule wardrobe too!
xo
I just bought a similar turtleneck sweater and have worn it an obscene amount of times already. Hope you snag one so I can steal even more inspiration from you ;)
I love the Dr. Marten boots. Adding a little masculinity to feminine pieces is my fav! Love this preview.
I bought a pair of boots for my fall capsule from Stuart Weitzman (similar here: http://www1.bloomingdales.com/shop/product/stuart-weitzman-pointed-toe-flat-riding-boots-bronco?ID=1072075&PartnerID=LINKSHARE&cm_mmc=LINKSHARE-_-n-_-n-_-n&LinkshareID=J84DHJLQkR4-baE.1V4OlZRaO4FxKRaTXA) and a blanket scarf from Aritzia recently which can be found here (http://us.aritzia.com/product/kaleidoscope-blanket/53101.html?dwvar_53101_color=5720#start=3 in peacoat/cream) that are DEFINITELY making it into my winter capsule. So excited!
1) yay for winter wardrobes! I just started mine on the 1st… Winter comes a little quicker in Northern Virginia!
2) love love love the loft!
3) Dr. Martens I think would look great on you! I’m too short too pull them off… I call myself a people mcnugget lol. Wish I could though because I love the look of them paired with something super girly!
You might want to read the reviews on these boots before you invest in them.
Have a great day.
I’m diggin on those sweaters! I think the shirt I bought recently from The Loft is from their Lou & Grey line and it’s officially my favorite shirt. I probably wear it more than I should.
I have the 8 eye oxblood red Doc Martens on my christmas list already!
Ooooh, I do love the Dr. Marten boots. Another option might be the Steve Madden Troopas. I love the look of mixing casual and dressy.
I bought those last year Laura on sale! SO COMFY once they’re broken in.
First let me start by saying how much I love your blog. I’ve been following you since late summer and Fall was my first capsule wardrobe. I don’t think I will ever dress differently. It is fun, easy and just makes so much sense! I am obsessed with this sweater from Madewell: https://www.madewell.com/madewell_category/SWEATERS/turtlenecks/PRDOVR~B5446/B5446.jsp I love all of the under layer potential. I’m also thinking I will be doing a lot of cozy long sleeve shirts with big cozy cardigans. Change out the shirts and add a different scarf – tons of outfits!
Loving this sneak peak! Especially the slouchy sweater and belt Can’t wait to see your finalized winter capsule!
I’m looking for a wrap coat like the wool grey one you have in your Fall Capsule. I really like the look of the one you have but I don’t think it would be very practical for an Arizona winter (hello 75 degree weather). So I’m on the hunt for a shorter but similar one :)
Hey, I just wanted to say I bought that exact gray coat and live in AZ too. It’s not very heavy and wouldn’t work in cold weather as I took it to Boston this week and froze in it ;)
I think you could totally pull off those boots, mixed with your simple style they go more classic than punk :)
Scarves! -Audrey | Brunch at Audrey’s
You pick out the coolest stuff! I already copied your Aritzia thermal top and I love it. I’d love to hear more about the bralette top. I am smaller busted and have a huge problem with bras riding up and this looks like it might solve that problem? I wonder if it’s REALLY padded though?
Heidi,
just a side note, your bras should never ride up… I learned late in life (27! why did no one tell me this at 15?) that most women are wearing their bras with the band size way too big, which allows the bra to move around and a) causes shoulder strain because of the straps carrying the weight of your boobs and b) is not as flattering to boobs!
Your bra should feel VERY snug around your ribs, and shouldn’t move even if you take the straps off your shoulders. I thought I was a 34-36 B, turns out I’m really a 32 D. Try a smaller band size and see if that helps!
So much this! All my life I thought I was a 34-36 B and bras were always uncomfortable! They were riding up and the underwires were hurting under my arms. Then I did a little google research and tried a 32 D. Boom! Life changing! :D I’m never going back to ill-fitting bras!
Yes! I thought for years that I was a 38C. Turns out I was a 34F!
This! Reddit’s A Bra That Fits totally blew my mind. Went from like a generic 34a/32b to a 30e. I wasn’t uncomfortable but my straps were always falling down and my band was riding up. If you don’t mind the shape they give, urban outfitters sells some inexpensive and super cute bralettes that aren’t padded or moulded cups at all, just lightly lined.
I have a pair of the For Life Docs and I love them! They’re about $20 more than the regular Docs but you can replace them whenever they wear through! I’ve had mine for about a year and they’re definitely still going strong and they’ve lived through the Midwestern climate including an entire summer. I prefer them to my Hunter boots for rain and they’re adorable in skinny jeans. I love your blog by the way! Please post more of your beauty routine? Perhaps with step by step pictures?
Is it weird if I keep my winter capsule pretty much the same as my autumn one? I am feeling so great with my autumn capsule that the only things I want to add are the items that I planned for, but didn’t buy for my autumn capsule. This capsule idea has changed my life I swear!
Mine’s pretty much the same, too. Sweaters and jeans are basically perfect until March. No shame! ;) I think I might add another colour into my winter wardrobe, though… like peacock. It would be a great excuse to finally own something besides a coat in peacock!
LOVE the bralette idea…I thought I was the only one too lazy to want to wear a real one haha! And love the preview…getting pumped about seeing the whole thing! The boots…..not my style…however you seem to put anything on and it looks absolutely adorable. haha! plus your tall self can totally pull it off. Hope the move is complete and things are going well!! <3
Lou & Grey is my absolute favorite!
I love your blog! You have truly inspired me that “less is more”! I have cleaned out my closet and will not go back! I look forward to reading your blog every day! :) <3
I just locked down my first capsule this week for winter! I narrowed down my closet for fall to about 40 items but didn’t buy anything. I just wore what I had and loved it! But I am definitely ready to change things up for winter. I am going to change over the week of 12/15 since I teach at a college and that is the start of our winter break. Plus, it will take me to spring break which works out pretty nicely for the spring capsule. The things I am most excited about are my shoe purchases. I bought a pair of Madewell brogues and Sam Edelman Petty Leather Booties to wear instead of my favorite brown and black flats. I love flats but since I live in Chicago, they aren’t practical in the winter. Before the capsule, I would just wear my boots but change shoes at work and it NEVER failed that I would end up strolling around campus with my flats because I forgot to change before I went out. But because of the capsule, I will put my flats away for the winter! I am super excited to make the switch! Thanks for your blog- it’s the first one I read every morning :)
Can’t recommend Doc Martens enough! Wearing them today and they’re keeping my feet warm and dry in some crazy unseasonable rain we’re having in LA. They are definitely badass, but actually not too punk in brown, especially paired with the cozy sweaters you’re looking at. :)
That coat! I’ve been looking for a similar coat for ages! It’s beautiful, I’m so excited for your winter wardrobe :)
I’m loving your website!! And, i’m now following you on instagram. I’m planning my winter capsule. My first! I started the purge of my clothes two wks ago; 8 shopping bags to Goodwill/Salvation Army and a few plastic totes into the back of the closet for other season. Now, I’m starting a pile or two (or more) of items to sell on eBay. I was really discouraged because my closet was almost EMPTY. I shopped and shopped (online) and bag after bag arrived to my apartment. Yippppeee. Except, barely anything fit. Talk about a downer. Discouraged. Feeling like a fatty. Thinking how am I ever going to afford so many NEW clothes. Back to the mall they all (almost all) went. If I didn’t LOVE it then it was returned immediately instead of my usual keeping because “it’s okay” which led to a closet of clothes I didn’t wear.
However, I pulled it together. Gathered my coupons and invested the time to write out a plan as you’ve suggested.
After a long day at work, I dedicated a little KELLY time for shopping…REAL shopping, trying on, changing sizes… and buying. It was THE BEST SHOPPING experience of my life!! I had been thinking for a few weeks what i wanted and needed and LOVED for a capsule wardrobe. And, I walked out of the mall happy!! So, thanks!!! I’m on my way. : )
As for the Doc’s. Sorry. Ewww. No. You’re style is far too classy for those ugly boots. Ugly shoes. But, this is YOUR blog. YOUR style. You should wear whatever makes you happy and feel like your best self.
Doc Martens were in my fall wardrobe and as it’s getting rainier and colder, I have ended up wearing them every day for the past two months! I work in a shop where it is frequently as cold inside as it is outside and they are AMAZING. And they go with everything – I even managed to wear them with black tights and a dress and they looked very stylish. 14 year old me is very satisfied.
Pro tip: get the leather conditioner (dr marten’s wonder balm) and wear them a couple hours a day at first to break them in.
Can’t wait to see your winter capsule! This fall capsule was my first shot at it. It definitely didn’t go as smoothly as I’d hoped but “how fascinating!” ;) so I’m open to learning more each go around. My time was up for fall capsule is complete mid-finals week so I’m hoping to put my winter capsule together over break. I’m a penniless college student so I’m struggling with having to purchase cheaper substitutes for pieces I really want so they’re just “not quite right.” Any suggestions for a really tight budget? I am a very beginner sewer and going to try to alter a few items i already own to fit better and be more useable.. I also thrift and of course hit up sales/coupons etc. But still seem to resort to forever 21! Ha
Have you ever looked into Thredup.com? You totally should. ;)
Ooo! So excited to see your Winter capsule. I think my winter one will look pretty much similar to my Fall one, since winter is in full swing in Chicago. I absolutely love the shearling coat and that marled sweater! I had a pair of docs in high school. I always found the boots really uncomfortable, especially around the ankles. Maybe if I suffered through the break-in period they would have been super comfortable, but I never made it that far to find out. Just a warning. But I love the tomboy look of them and they remind me of my punky high school days! :)
i had also been on the fence about doc martens, but i got them… and love them! my stye is not too *punk* regularly but so many features of the docs were appealing to me: lace up, comfort, all-black. i think they fit well into a minimalist’s aesthetic and purpose. and it’s great to have a pair of boots in the closet that are as cool as ‘dress up’ boots, but that i don’t have to worry about getting dirty or scuffed. they handle it all well! so my vote is… go for the docs! you’ve mentioned them a few times so i don’t think you should say you’re on the fence anymore ;)
I think you should check out the Dr Marten’s Felice boots, they have all the good things of Doc’s, but are less chunky, less punk and a bit more feminine. And they are warm and soft and need no breaking in! I have them and love them, they are perfect for the cold-but-not-freezing and usually very wet winters we have in the south of Sweden.
Hi Caroline,
I hope you had a happy Thanksgiving!

thank you! i just recently decided to only purchase sweatshop free clothing. these resources are fantastic!
No problem, Mary!
I just wanted to clarify that the first sweatshop-free item I listed is the brand C&C California. C&C’s personal online shop is getting a re-boot, but you can still find their stuff online. Revolveclothing.com just happens to sell some C&C stuff. Nordstrom, zappos.com, and some other department stores do as well.
Also, I posted a short list of sweatshop-free brands in the comments section of Caroline’s “4.23 one piece to up your style + comfort” entry. There are a lot more, though!
Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts. Your blog is the first minimal blog that has truly inspired me. I stopped shopping for 2 months and have a minimal closet already, but now that I started shopping/looking again I’m having a hard time staying focused!
I don’t know if you’ll be able to see these or not, but the docs I have are a bit more feminine with the ribbon laces and floral inside. I like the navy color with jeans.
http://www.amazon.com/Dr-Martens-Womens-Aimilie-Boot/dp/B00C2RBBXY
I have not completely broken them in and I don’t wear them that much, but I love the looks and idea of them. I always hesitate and I’m not sure why. I’ve heard that they are a little more narrow and more comfortable than other Docs.
Ooh fun! I love the shearling coat + marled sweater (I have similar in my Pinterest lookbook), but definitely wouldn’t be able to add those 3-inch wedges to my list :( Anything over 2 inches and I start having to change my gait to accommodate, which after years of doing so I’ve learned effs up my hips/feetsies. The final straw for me was a painfully slow tiny-stepping “run” through pouring rain from a party to the car a few weeks ago in my one remaining pair of 3 inch heels, barely getting across the street in time to avoid an oncoming car. I initially tried to run faster, but started to teeter, so tiny-stepping was my only option. Oh how I wish the heel on those was shorter – they’re beautiful caramel-colored leather peep toe clogs!
Hi! I’ve really enjoyed your blog! Looking forward to your winter capsule (even though it is incredibly hot here already in Australia!)
I’m loving all the Lou & Grey winter line! They look AH-MAMZING! I’ll definitely be picking up a few items for my winter capsule wardrobe. Can’t wait to see what your wardrobe looks like!
– Caroline

I LOVE my Docs but they do take a LONG time to break in. I remember getting raw heels every time I wore them for at least the first year I owned them. Maybe that Band-Aid brand friction balm stuff would’ve helped??
Also WAY excited for that un-bra!
I love the shearling coat and the dr martens boots !
http://kadi-lv.com
Girl, that shearling coat and the Doc Martens are making me GIDDY (I’ve always wanted a vintage “Bob-Dylan-coat”… you know the one he wears on one of his album covers). Don’t fear the Doc’s punk factor! Like some of the other comments have said, they definitely can be an edgy addition to an overall feminine look. Can’t wait to see what you end up buying!
If you are looking for a similar comfort/feel to Doc Marten’s but feel that they are too punk, I would recommend Blundstone Boots. They are the same idea but a little less punk. Very comfy and good traction! I wear mine every day!
I agree with the cozy for this winter! I love that shearling coat – I need to find one like that!
I recently found your blog and have really been enjoying it. I lost a bunch of weight and had to buy a new wardrobe a couple times over. Unfortunately I had no cohesive plan and it seem like I have a closet full of clothes and very little to wear. Suffice it to say, I can’t wait to see what you come up with for your winter capsule. I relate to your style and could really use the inspiration. Cheers!
How funny, I just bought the Sketchers version of Doc Martens in a thrift store for $9. And the soles were in PERFECT condition. I think it’s funny that they showed up in your winter wardrobe and makes me feel better about my purchase- my husband was picking on my “combat boots” pretty hard.
(I don’t care they’re comfortable!!)
I bought Cobb Hill’s Bethany boots for fall and I wear them all.the.time.
http://www.zappos.com/cobb-hill-bethany-blue-teal?ef_id=UuRoggAABXhpkBEW:20141204010117:s
They’re lined, too, so they’re nice & toasty – they’re great for Chicago weather and they’re probably going to get at least 6 months of wear every year. I bought them in the teal color – which I have so much of it’s practically a neutral in my wardrobe.
I don’t think the style looks punk unless everything else you’re wearing skews that way. Context. :)
I can’t wait to see your winter capsule! I check your blog every day and am sad when you don’t post. If you decide against the Docs, I have a pair of Frye combat boots that I’ve been loving this fall. They are the Veronica Combat. I got the camel color and they’re so cute and comfy. :)
always love your stuff Caroline
I may have to have that jacket for $48 at forever 21- you can’t go wrong…
Loving the doc martens but I do think they may be too punk for you…
belts are awesome for accessories.. I’ve found that spending a bit on them is worth it…
Nothing says winter like a bralette!!
I just ordered some low-heel ankle boots for my winter capsule. If you decide against the doc martens you should check them out. Very versatile and utilitarian but less punk-looking. I’m also pining for a white button up like yours. Love the preview. I’m excited to see what else you have in mind.
http://m.shoebuy.com/products/702545?cm_mmc=googleproductads_pla-_-none-_-none-_-none
I’m kind of confused…you already have two pairs of black booties and a pair of wedge booties, yet you’re planning for another pair of booties? Why is that? It just doesn’t seem that minimalistic to me. :/ Why not have just 1-2 pairs of booties total?
I was thinking the same. I have seen you have several pairs of boots… So buying some news for every season capsules is not quite minimalist… Eventually you’ll finish with 4 or 5 pairs of new boots every year!!! I haven’t got a capsule wardrobe, but I normally have 3-4 pairs between boots and booties for at least 3 or 4 years at least.
Please, could you clarify? I am sure we have to be missing something :-)
I think I understand why Caroline would want another pair – if you look at the black booties she has in this autumn capsule – they both have cutouts and it makes sense that she’d want to get a pair that’s made for cold and wet winter weather. Plus Doc Martens are a completely different style of boot than the ones she already has.
I don’t think she’ll be buying 5 pairs of new boots every season; if I’m not mistaken, Caroline has mentioned she wants to create 4 capsule wardrobes for every season and then just pull them out, update 4-8 pieces and use them again. I don’t think the purpose of this concept of a capsule wardrobe is to have the absolute minimum of pieces necessary, it’s more about being conscious of what we buy and how we use it, but also, very importantly, about having some fun with it in the process. :-)
I was referring to the “dressy booties”, as I’m aware she doesn’t have other shoes like the Doc Martens. Also, you point out that BOTH pairs of her black booties have cutouts–why does one need two pairs of cutout black booties if they’re claiming minimalism? 37 pieces times 4 seasons is in no way minimalist. I think it’s disingenuous to spout off about how minimalist you are when you really aren’t.
I realize that having a blog is opening yourself up to the world and that brings critique and censure. But this is a fashion blog and Caroline is WAY more minimal than most fashion bloggers who have designer bags and shoes galore. Also, she is more minimal than she previously was. What would be an appropriate number to you? 15? Who would want to look at her blog if every few days she was wearing the same outfit? If you don’t think she’s minimalist enough, move on and stop checking her blog. But don’t tear her down.
My bad, I thought you were talking about the DMs. I still think it’s very much okay for her to get a pair of dressy booties, they are a different style and more winter friendly. The cut out booties – one has is a bit of a clogg style boot with a big heel, the other one is a casual black boot. To me they both have a different purpose.
And I second what Mandi says here, this IS a minimalist fashion blog in all sense of the word but especially in comparison with other fashion blogs – where you will never see the girl wear the same thing twice and where you will read her tweets about how many new clothes orders she’s expecting that week.
Everybody has a different version of minimalism and this is Caroline’s. It works for her, and clearly, judging from her big following, it works for hundreds, if not thousands of others, too. It’s okay if your version is different, but it’s not okay for anyone to spread negativity just because they have a different opinion.
Please don’t attack me for having an opinion that differs from 90% of her followers. I never attacked Caroline. I’m very much still a fan of her blog. Heck, I blog myself and I know the kinds of criticism bloggers can and do receive, and I know about the bigger bloggers who have a new designer bag every week. I just question sometimes her thought process. She says some things and almost contradicts herself later on. I want to know MORE. I want to know why she picked all of the booties she has versus having just one or two nice pairs that serve every purpose. I want to know how her things/outfits are working out for her in real life, like out and about running errands and such (we all know photos are taken ahead of time and in her home). I want to know if she thinks the items she buys will stand the test of time (or at least last more than just a season–both physically from wear and tear and how she likes it). I think those are all valid concerns as someone who is considering a capsule wardrobe but isn’t really getting the full picture.
Hi Kimi,
I didn’t mean for the comment to sound like I was attacking you. Your questions and concerns are very relevant and I’m wondering about some of those things myself.
I think the problem here is that it’s so easy to write something meaning one thing and for somebody else to read and understand it as another. To me, your comment sounded like an attack, but now I know it wasn’t meant that way.
We all just have to be careful about what we say and how we say it, I think, so that it’s not taken the wrong way.
Anyway, if you’re considering a capsule wardrobe, I think it’s easiest to just try and do it – you’ll learn the most from your own mistakes and you’ll be able to answer those questions you have for yourself :). I can honestly say that I’ve learnt so much about myself and my style from taking this “challenge”. And if after a month you find you really don’t like it, you can easily quit, I mean, it’s not like you signed your soul over to the devil or anything :) Good luck!
I just stumbled across this article – an interview with Caroline done some months ago, but I think she answers some of the questions you have in it, might be worth a read! :)
http://into-mind.com/2014/07/14/carolines-37-piece-capsule-wardrobe-creative-process/
Thank you, Kat. I’m glad we are on the same page. :) I guess I just wish Caroline shared more than just outfits and wardrobe items, if that makes sense. A lot of transparency goes a long way, especially in blogging world! I remember reading that article (I think it may be how I found Unfancy in the first place), but I don’t remember the details so I’ll have to read it again. :)
I don’t think 3-5 pairs of shoes and boots is excessive. Seems very minimal to me. Maybe because she doesn’t have a lot of clothes in her wardrobe, shoes are an easy way to change up an outfit?? My shoes and boot, especially, wear out so easily. Everybody’s different.
She needs to buy more items every season because the items from previous seasons are in many cases no longer available to buy, and she needs the commission from when readers click on the styleme links. Without the income from the product links the blog would cost her money instead of making money for her, and she’d be forced to shut it down.
I really don’t think that’s true. That would totally go against the whole idea of this blog and with rstyle links you can link similar items too, without having to purchase a new item.
Love the shearling coat, Caroline! I’m still looking for a second coat for my winter capsule – I wanted a woolen wrap coat but the ones I like are too expensive. My next choice was a leather jacket but I’m afraid it won’t keep me warm enough. Shearling coat might be the answer!
About your whole boots debate: if you want them and think you’d get your wear out of them – get them. You can definitely make them work, I know it. I really wanted punk-y boots in my capsule and in the end I got the Steve Madden black Troopas – Doc Martens seemed too chunky for me but I do think they work especially well on skinny leg gals like yourself!
For my winter wardrobe I’m adding a TON of sweaters, honestly, like 8. I get cold, okay? Plus I think a turtleneck is a must for this season. Cosy AND warm! Because it’s not oversized fit I think it’s a great piece for creating some really stylish outfits. Can’t wait to look chic :-)
I love the sweater and coat. Looking forward to the new season and seeing more of your well put together outfits. You have such great style!
Loved it! I would wear all those pieces!
I still have my Doc Marten boots from high school. They are 17 years old and still as awesome as ever! I say definitely wear them with tights / leggings / shredded jeans / dresses. I can’t imagine ever kicking them out of my closet.
I’m not a huge fan of Doc Martins but some people can definitely rock them!
Question: I wear belts all the time and I feel like I have to match them with my shoe color (black shoes = black belt; brown shoes = brown belt). I know you mix brown/black all the time with your shoes, bags, hats, etc, so do you think a belt needs to match the shoe color?

I also echo the love for the Lou & Grey line. I’ve gotten a few pieces from there, and love them. Very comfortable. Right up your alley.
I was thinking about the Doc Martins trend the other day. Not feelin’ them yet. Give me three years, that’s usually how long it takes me to come around to new (old) trends! Psst. I said I’d NEVER wear skinnies about the same time you were. ;)
So glad the links to the shearling coat are beautiful FAUX variations!! Real shearling is FUR just inside out.
Great pieces assembled thus far! BTW, u can snag some awesome vintage England-made DM boots on eBay for about $50, which are way better quality than the current China made ones. The new “England made” DMs are very STIFF and expensive. Happy Winter!
I love the shearling coat ! It has such an adventurer’s vibe to it :) I wish I could wear something like it during the winter, but it so freezing in Paris (or maybe I’m just a wimp) that I need a coat that covers my thighs to survive the cold ;) I started my first capsule ever on December 1st, and it has confirmed that, will I have my winter uniform down to a pat (oversized masculine-feminine sweaters with black skinnny bottoms) I’ll need to work far more on figuring out my spring and summer styles ! Thanks for all the inspiration and nice reads :)
I’m a bit biased because I do work (super part time) at Loft, but the reason behind me working isn’t for the money, it’s for pieces like those you’ve picked from Lou and Grey!! The line is my favorite! They are so soft and really step up in style. There is a quilted moto jacket I just purchased for my mom for Christmas. It is so comfy and stylish, I may just get one for myself too!
