We’re slipping into that slow, relaxed stretch of summertime, and I feel my summer style emerging. It’s basic and repetitive — but rather than feeling boring or restrictive, it feels freeing in its simplicity.
Isn’t it nice to not have to think too much about what to wear? I love that feeling in the summertime.
There’s no need to get super creative with my style, no need to pay much attention to trends, no need to keep up with what the fashion set is wearing. Instead, I can just rely on outfit formulas that always work for me. And then get on with savoring my favorite season.
One of my most reliable outfit formulas consists of:
- An oversized button down shirt
- A basic tee
- A good pair of jeans (or denim shorts when it’s super hot)
- Comfortable flat sandals
- Bonus! A canvas tote and a claw clip
So tell me, what’s one of your go-to outfit formulas in the summer?

Erm, this sentiment? “There’s no need to get super creative with my style, no need to pay much attention to trends, no need to keep up with what the fashion set is wearing. Instead, I can just rely on outfit formulas that always work for me.” – I think I might get this embroidered (or rather: written on a sticky note) and stick it on my wardrobe doors! New mantra/affirmation to repeat to myself as I’m trying to learn to appreciate what I have instead of always trying to optimise my clothes, i.e. always ending up buying more stuff because I overthink my existing things to the point of them falling out of favour!
It can get very hot and humid where I live and my style this time of year always settles in similar to yours. You’ll either find me in linen shorts, a tank, and an open button down when I need shoulder coverage or in a simple flowy linen dress, my tan flip flops and basket tote always within reach. I love the simplicity of summer style!
This is so helpful! I’m working on getting away from the basic + repetitive = boring mindset. Because I don’t want to be seen as boring! But, as you point out, it’s freeing and my mental and creative energies can be spent on more useful and fulfilling activities. Summer is my worst season – I don’t like feeling hot and have a hard time with humidity – and anything that makes it more easeful is a blessing. Summer uniform, here I come!
