It’s time to meet our second guest blogger — Jaana! She’ll be here every Thursday, showing us her outfits + sharing how she makes a capsule wardrobe work for her lifestyle. Make sure to leave her plenty of love and check out her blog today too! xo Caroline

Hey guys! I’m Jaana (pronounced Yawn-uh). I’m currently settled in Burbank, CA with my husband, Paul. We are parents to a 4-year-old firecracker of a little boy named Stevie… and a very needy cat. I’m a Stay-at-Home Mom who never seems to be at home. I also do vacation photography, right here in sunny Southern California.
What does a typical day in your life look like?
My days are very scheduled, which is so weird because I’ve always been more of a go-with-the-breezes kind of girl. But my son has special needs, so he simply functions better when he knows what to expect. That being said, I also have to stay super flexible, because it seems most things don’t go according to plan!
My days are spent trying to keep Stevie and I both entertained. There are lots of walks, trips to the playground, museum visits, train rides, plenty of time in the car going to therapy and doctor appointments, picnics, naps, hours of floor time play, building tracks, rolling cars, and the occasional wrestling match – usually as I’m putting Stevie’s shoes on. It makes me tired just thinking about it all!
Weekends, I prefer to spend with my little family and there is usually lots of food involved.
When did you start your capsule wardrobe?
I started a version of my capsule wardrobe last spring. I really dug into my closet over the summer, then the biggest surprise happened when my wardrobe seemed to get even smaller in Fall 2014 and Winter 2015. Didn’t see that coming!
What’s the biggest challenge of living with a capsule wardrobe?
Four words: No. More. Impulse. Shopping.
What’s the biggest perk?
It really takes all the effort out of getting ready for the day. I love everything in my closet and so many items work together. It’s just so simple!
How do you tailor the Unfancy rules to fit your lifestyle?
I don’t necessarily follow the 37-piece rule. Honestly, it’s the shoes that I love a little too much. But as long as I’m wearing all of the items regularly, I don’t limit myself to an exact number. I strongly see the benefits of the smaller wardrobe though, and that’s why over the last few months, my numbers have continued to shrink.
How many pieces do you have in your capsule wardrobe?
About 50 — not including work tees/exercise gear/special occasion outfits.
What was your budget for your capsule wardrobe?
$350
Tell us about the process of making your current capsule wardrobe.
Well, like the good student I am, I totally filled out the worksheets that Caroline provides on her site to have a clear picture of what I wanted to achieve. When I was buying clothes, I had a list on my phone that said “YOU ARE ONLY ALLOWED TO BUY THESE!” And I was steadfast in sticking to that list.
Cleaning my closet took the most time and effort. Getting clothes to storage, family members, consignment stores and charity – I kind of never want to go through that again, so it’s a huge motivation to keep my wardrobe on the small side.
Where can we keep up with you on the internet?
Instagram | Twitter | Pinterest | Blog
I’ve also been featured on the @nothingbutpixies Instagram feed a couple times, much to the joy of my hair stylist! I’ve also had features on Clothed Much & Stylin’ Mommies like million years ago, and I took photos of WhippyCake’s family at Disneyland. She was kind enough to write up a fantastic little review on her blog.
What a wonderful mum you sound like Janna and I love every single piece in your capsule collection!
Love that grid button down! Love even more that it’s from H&M and still available
woohoo!! it’s super comfy too! :)
I love this guest post feature! It was great reading the interview questions as well. I would like to attempt a capsule wardrobe myself, especially because as Jaana has stated, it makes getting dressed so much simpler!

girl, you are gorgeous. I love your hair!!
Hello Jaana (I am really glad you helped us to pronounce your name because the not knowing if I was saying it right in my head as I read would upset me :) Thanks)
Can I just say you sound like the funnest mum ever! Can I come and do all those fun things too?!
I also filled out the work sheets which I found super helpful. And I totally agree that one of the best things is how easy it is to get dressed in the morning, even if most of my clothes are wash or ironing basket. I seem to cobble together an outfit pretty easily. And that is after just narrowing my wardrobe not buying more to make it more concious and all work together.
Thanks for opening up and sharing with us! :)
i would love someone to join us on our adventures. come play! ;)
I love your wardrobe, Jaana! I’m a black/white/gray/shades of blue and pinches of red girl these days with the capsule wardrobe, but your wardrobe shows how there can be plenty of color, versatility, AND be easily mix and match-able. Thank you!
it was a big step for me to buy RED this year, and i’ve gotten so many compliments. so far so good!
Great post! She seems really chill, and I love her wardrobe. To be honest, all of these new capsule posts are making want to impulse shop more! ;)
Quick broken link issue: The link to her blog accidentally includes your page adderss. It looks like the website thinks her blog’s address is a subset of your directory:
http://www.un-fancy.com/guest-bloggers/meet-jaana-her-capsule-wardrobe/www.thismomsgonnasnap.com
I think it just needs to be set as “external,” not “internal,”
Cheers!
Thanks for the heads up Helena! It’s fixed now. :) xo Caroline
No problem :)
Hi Jaana!
Thanks for sharing your capsule wardrobe with us! Can’t wait to see how you style it all!
Lizzi
I love this contributor. I feel like we have such similar style, body size/shape and profession. It might actually be quite weird that I’m so excited and sharing it in public. Thanks for making such great and accessible guest contributors. I adore your blog and feel so inspired by what you put out into the world.
I’m excited that you’re excited! :)
Good afternoon,
Can you ask your guest bloggers to please feature an outfit from their capsule wardrobe in each of the posts? It helps pull together the story line–and the clothes are really only interesting on the woman who wears them!
Alternately–Caroline please include a snap of an outfit from your capsule every post. This makes the page more interesting, and, I am dying to know how you will wear many of the elements in your capsule that haven’t made an appearance yet. I am new to the capsule concept, and introducing new capsules every day diminishes the concept for me.
Thanks!
Hi Petunia! We will definitely be posting outfits over the next several weeks! Stay tuned! :)
Yay! Welcome Jaana! I’m excited to see how another southern californian does a capsule wardrobe :)
It seems like it would be easy with the lack of seasons, but it’s tricky!
Hello from a fellow Burbank-ian!
Well hi!! Love seeing people from my big/little town!
Yay! I love Jaana and her awesome sense of style. I can’t wait to read more!
Thanks for the support girl!
So excited to see both of these new contributors! Seeing different peoples’ takes is so inspiring. And I’m a shameless style stealer, so I’m really looking forward to the outfits.
Hey Jaana, I love the highlights of your capsule wardrobe, particularly the black/white colour story. Also, lovin’ your hair cos I’m thinking of a similar style so keen to check that out too!!
Go for the short hair! It’s so fun!
Jaana, I also have a special needs child and respect the time and patience that it takes!
Caroline, Jacquelyn, and Jaana, would you consider posting some current DO NOTS. I’m thinking fashion that was good one or two years ago. For instance (maybe a bad example), but the bubble JCrew necklace. I still see it on Pinterest. so does that mean I should wear it? (I don’t and never did but I do have one for sale.) How about the camouflage trend (which I actually love, but think I shouldn’t), or the turn from skinny jeans to loose cut/boyfriend jeans. Or maybe what you did last year in your capsule that doesn’t seem very cool anymore. (Please don’t tell me to rid my closet of my beloved Birkenstocks! I cannot wait for warmer weather so I can wear them again.)
As always, I love your blog and can’t wait to see more of the guest bloggers.
Don’t get rid of those Birkenstocks just yet! (love mine too!!) I never really thought of doing a “don’t” post because everyone’s style is so different. But I like the idea. I’m going to think about this one for sure!
Oh Laura this is such a great idea! I think it’s safe to say a post like this is in the works! :) xo Caroline
I am seriously loving the guest bloggers, I thought this blog couldn’t get anymore exciting!! It just did! Thanks for sharing your capsule and I can’t wait to see you style it. Some of the items are similar to mine, for example, the good old denim shirt, stripe top and leather jacket… I think these are classics in a lot of people’s wardrobes! Keep up the great work xx
Hi Jaana!
I’m also from Burbank (small world!), have a 3-year-old daughter and recently chopped my hair into a pixie AND went blonde for the first time! So we should totally hang out. No, seriously. Perhaps you could hang out at my place, in the proximity of my closet? Just saying. I haven’t quite achieved a capsule wardrobe yet, but am enjoying lurking here and learning about everyone’s process. Maybe I’ll get closer to the capsule thing eventually. Love your style!
Debbie
OMG Debbie! I love it, we are practically twins!!!
I wish, girlfriend! Give me another six months of Weight Watchers and we might be close…. ;)
I just love seeing other people’s capsule wardrobes! This is so much fun!!!! The only thing that would make it better is to get a glimpse of people’s jewelry working in their capsule wardrobes. I know not everyone includes specific pieces in their capsule wardrobes because some people like to wear fewer clothes and use a massive amount of accessories to change it up, but others like to keep their jewelry as streamlined as the rest of their wardrobe. I’d love to hear some of the stories about what accessories made the cut and why they wear them daily. Just a thought.
But really, these profiles are amazing and I just want to thank you for sharing them with us!
I love that she’s mixing black and brown in her wardrobe. Can’t wait to see her outfits!
Have you ever heard Gok’s fashion fix (you may found it on youtube)? It watched it several years go and got some bite. I’ve now about 43 garments in wardrobe + underwear which I’m not counting on this, lol. Half my wardrobe is like from the office to afterwork and rest off is cosy and sportswear. I’ve dreamed this moment so much and it’s way better than I thought! I don’t feel like shopping anymore but I allow my self shop if I see something nice, it suits my wardrobe (when you’ve so little it’s very easy remember to everything inside and out u know) and then I think would I really wear this item many times or is just my fantasy world (You know when it’s summer I could totally wear this skirt and have a cocktail with B in patio. I’ve never ever had cocktails with B in patio since we met umm..five years ago. :D). And usually when I end up buying something, then something else(s) is leaving out of my current wardrobe. I’ve one question to ask from you Jaana, how do you avoid (drooling) impulse shopping?
I have to be in the right frame of mind. Sometimes I still slip and impulse shop! Then I end up returning items. I have to avoid SALES!! When I see something with a good deal, I want it so bad. It’s a slow transition. Still learning as I go <3
You are so adorable Jaana! The shoes get me every time too…
I know you feel my pain ;)
