…I probably should have gotten tights that were more opaque. I’m not really digging the skin showing through look. Lesson learned.
But besides that, I love this outfit. To me, it’s cool girl at it’s finest. I like the swingy skirt + oversized sweater look, like this. Since I didn’t have those exact pieces in my capsule wardrobe though, I used what I had and came up with this version of that look. I’m liking it.
I have a feeling I’m going to be recreating this look more in my winter capsule with fleece lined tights. Right now, in my winter capsule planning, all I can think about is comfort. Mega comfort. Oversized sweaters, warm boots, and leggings. Leggings forever.

You may want to try Hue brand tights in super opaque – I love them
Love the outfit!
I frequently layer my tights in fall/winter. a little extra warmth and very opaque!
(You have to be careful putting them on, though. Layered tights with one pair twister will drive you seriously bonkers.)
Aww, this outfit looks so cozy! I’m always confused between tights vs. leggings. When I wear boots and my ankles are hidden, I just wear thick leggings for extra warmth — but then it gets super hot in the office…. I might need to search for these opaque tights!
Sincerely, Tania
My winter wardrobe started this week. I definitely have a pair of ponte leggings in there! I can’t get over how comfy they are, but they look like dress pants. Perfect…stealth comfort.
Do you mind sharing where you got your Ponte pants. I bought a pair from Amazon, got them yesterday, tried them on and didn’t love them because of the fit. So, I’m looking for a good brand to replace them. I don’t want to spend more than $50 for them though. Thanks in advance for any help you can give.
I just googled ponte leggings and Loft’s Lou & Grey pair popped up! On sale they’re right at your price point! http://www.loft.com/lou-26-grey-ponte-leggings/303852
Thanks so much Sara!
One of my girlfriends recommended your blog to me over the weekend and I can’t get enough! I pulled everything out of my closet and only put back what I love and it’s so much easier to decide what to wear in the morning. Thank you!
I loved this sweater that you have in your winter collection and found one that is similar at Old Navy last night: Women’s Fair Isle Open-Front Cardis
I used to buy all my tights from Gap a size up so they were very opaque, but now they make specially opaque tights and they are amazing. And pretty affordable!
Love this outfit, and your blog! It has truly inspired me to shop my own closet, and tone down my spending! All of your outfits and great – simple yet stylish and put together. Just wanted to say thanks :)
Love the picture in the pin and I love how you’ve changed it to make it your own without making it exactly the same. A skill I’m slowly working on…..Great job! Another cute outfit!
Love, love, love this outfit! I could never figure out how to wear my brown boots with black tights but you nailed it. I travel all of the time for work and you inspired me to create a business travel capsule wardrobe – I’m sharing it today on my blog. Thanks!

I just checked out your blog. Love it!
I thought you were going to write that you’d change booties to black. The brown look like you didn’t have a choice so you wore all monochrome except on your feet.
I don’t like the brown boots either. Black boots would have rocked this outfit.
Oooh, I LOVE the cognac boots with black tights! I feel it warms up the outfit. ;)
Love this look!
I find if I want really opaque tights, I get dance tights. They are usually a more comfortable feel than regular tights, and more stretchy. Back in the day the Baryshnikov tights were my favorite, but I can’t seem to find them anywhere online. Bloch, Capezio, Bodywrappers, and Danskin are all good brands to check out for tights and leggings.
I love this look!
Caroline, wondering if you could share a post or two about clothing care? At this point I have an unofficial clothing capsule, and since I wear the same few things often I’m concerned about wear + tear. Do you take any special measures to prevent that? Like, combing a sweater for pilling, hand washing, etc.?
Thanks!

Calvin Klein has incredibly opaque tights — I don’t trust anything else! Make sure to get them in 120 Denier though, and if you get them from a CK outlet, they’re super affordable!
I SO share your love for leggings! After forcing myself out of them for a while this year and never really feeling like myself I bought two pairs and they’ve actually replaced my other trousers in my not-quite-there-yet capsule :) I left one pair of jeans and beetroot GAP trousers on the list (for the sake of decency), but leggings definitely FTW!
And a sweatshop-free bag:

I just love your blog and can’t believe I only found it less than a week ago. I’ve already stripped down my closet. What remains is a 50-piece Fall/Winter capsule. (I’ll strive for 37 per season: baby steps.) Can’t believe how much money is lying on the floor of my closet. (That’s where the clothes being readied for consignment or donation are, at the moment.)
As to this outfit, you look lovely (of course). A good friend of mine has a very stylish, hip-urban/vintage look. I think I’ve seen her with less-than-opaque hosiery on, so I don’t think it’s bad. I probably prefer opaque in cooler weather like you and others.
Thank you for sharing “mistakes.” So so helpful.
Sorry, I just can’t help myself. Here’s another sweatshop-free bag that’s guaranteed for life!

Hi Marisa! It’s very kind of you to post all of the links to the sweatshop-free items. Have you considered starting your own blog around that idea? I’m sure you’d do a great job. ;)
Hi Kimberly,
I’m supposed to be writing something else right now, but maybe I will do that! Thanks!
Hi! I see you didn’t approve my first long post in which I sent you links to sweatshop-free versions of each of your outfit items today. So I will try sending the links one at a time.

Dex has what appears to be this exact sweater at Lord & Taylor.
Kohl’s sells sweater tights that are soooooo comfy. In the winter I struggle with just wanting to same thing over and over, but these tights have saved me from that winter rut!!
So I bought your sweater off zulilly forever ago, and I finally got it today! I never thought I’d look good in a drapey circle sweater, but I kind of love it. I’m wearing it now!
I also totally made a best friend the other week, thanks to you. I went bowling with my fiancé (who lives 1000 miles away in KS), his coworker, and the colleague’s wife, whom I’d never met. She complimented my leopard-print smoking slippers, and I told her I loved them for their versatility, because I have a capsule wardrobe, which is–and she interrupted me saying she was totally obsessed with capsule wardrobes right now, though she hasn’t pared her wardrobe down quite enough. I told her, “If you want a great capsule wardrobe blog, you should totally check out–” “Caroline?!” she said. And much fangirling and bonding ensued. Our men looked at us like we were crazy, but there you have it. ;)
What’s the best store for leggings? I end up searching all through the mall but each store only has a handful… looking for comfy, cozy leggings (for Canadian winters!)
IMO, best affordable opaque tights are H&M 120 Den and Uniqlo’s extra warm heat tech tights. I’ve had one pair of the H&M ones for 7 years and they’re still going strong!
