Hey! Whoa! Guess what I just realized? This is my 200th post!
Pretty cool stuff.
So I’m living in this outfit these days. It’s my Fall Uniform 3.0.
(Here’s 1.0 and 2.0 in case you missed them.)
I’ve noticed my style becoming increasingly monochromatic lately. I’ve always been drawn to neutrals, but now … well, things are about to get extra neutral around here.
I can tell you this with certainty because I’ve been putting together my winter capsule wardrobe this week.
And there isn’t an ounce of color so far.
Everything is black, white, or grey. Hm.
I’m planning on putting a touch of color in there somewhere. My color this winter, in theory at least, is a light powder blue.
Like I mentioned a couple of days ago, I get extra lazy when it comes to getting dressed in the winter. I just want to wear leggings and sports bras and sweatshirts. And neutrals, apparently. Do you feel that way in the winter too? Just me?
But I’ve decided to embrace that wholeheartedly + get creative + and try to style ultra comfortable clothes to look kinda fancy. And I’m super excited.
I feel like the best stuff comes when we embrace the place we are right now + work with it, instead of pretending we’re somewhere else. Don’t you think?
I’m telling myself this in a lot of areas of life right now. :)
Top: Aritzia
Jacket: old from Zara (similar)
Bottoms: old from Gap (similar)
Shoes: J.Crew
Necklace: Moulton
LOOOVE your look! :-)
Actually I have the same outlook as you on the cosiness. :) And you’ve helped me put words on WHY I love specific clothes.
But I love to ad just a little color on my (almost) all black wardrobe in the fall/winter with bright warm red, icy blue and deep forest green. In accesories (gloves, beanie hat and scarfs).

I totally hear ya–winter makes me want to just stay inside and cuddle my pup all day! On Fridays I can do just that and get away with crawling out of bed and starting the day in my pajamas, but Monday-Thursday I have to find a way to look professional and still feel cozy. This sweater has been perfect for those cold mornings where I can barely crawl out of bed. Its marled, thick, and cozy, but is semi structured so it feels like a sweater-jacket-blazer….or something like that :)

You should incorporate Marsala, Pantone’s 2015 color of the year into your winter capsule!
Wow! You Always look pretty or cute, both of which are great, but today you look especially hip and chic–the first word I thought of when I saw the first picture was Sophisticated! A more mature & confident look, like this lady knows what she’s about and what’s going on, and if you don’t believe it just ask her!
I’ve always been a color-girl, navy as my neutral base year-’round with whites and reds thrown in in summer, burgundy and creams in winter, always makes me feel good and vibrant, ready to tackle anything. However for the past week or so I’ve been drawn to a monochromatic Grey look–that’s Grey, not Gray, I just found out there’s a difference on color charts: http://www.greyorgray.com/ , who knew?! I’m blonde and have a camel coat, and sometimes in winter I enjoy wearing that coat with a skirt & blouse in cream colors and burgundy boots, but that’s as monochromatic as I usually get. I’m toying with the idea of this winter adding instead a grey coat in the style of a typical camel coat, and grey sweaters and a grey skirt; I know they would work well with my other existing wardrobe colors and I think I would wear them monochromatic-ly as well…
That’s really interesting about the difference between Gray & Grey! I never knew :o)
I’m excited to see how your winter capsule turns out in trying to strike a balance between comfort and style– that’s basically exactly what I’m trying to do right now. I’m going to an extreme and experimenting with eliminating real pants entirely, save for a pair of khakis that I need for work from time to time. So far it basically feels like wearing PJs to work every day but I still look presentable, which is a success as far as I’m concerned!
You fall uniform is my life uniform haha. I love jeans + tees + leather jacket. I’m loving that leather is trending right now so I can find my PERFECT leather jacket!
I’ve noticed your monochrome look and I’m loving it! Most people go for metallic and sequins in the winter — and I prefer an understated look all year round.
Can’t wait to see your choices!
Sincerely, Tania
I’m totally loving the all black… I definitely do that way too often myself! I tried to pack just a capsule wardrobe for this year (I’m studying abroad in the UK) and my colour palate is black, grey, and navy blue with the occasional pop of red! But at home in the fall/ early winter I live in jeans, boots, a t and a leather jacket. I think it’s classic, understated and cool!

I can relate. I’m always very neutral so that It’s easy to get dressed and mix and match. Recently I’ve been reminded that other people are better at buying things for me when it comes to stepping outside my comfort zone. My children bought me a scarf for my birthday and I was immediately thinking I’d never wear it and may have to sneak and return it. I pulled it out yesterday and wore it and got so many compliments! It actually went really well with my neutral style and it was just the perfect little something to add a bit of color to my outfit. So maybe you could ask your husband or other trusted friend to pick something out for you and have it be part of your capsule! Just an idea! Congrats on the 200th post. Love your blog!
Oh yes, celebrations for the 200th post! Maybe a little sip of 200-proof whiskey is in order?…
Embrace the neutrals! It’s almost like emulating nature. In the winter when things are grey and brown, I find I wear those colors more and once the flowers start blooming in spring and summer, I want my wardrobe to have a few of those colors too. I’ve been wearing a ton of all black or mostly grey outfits this week. I love it!
Yes! Black on black :). I guess I live in neutrals in the sense that I wear a lot of black. But I like to throw in some bright colors peeking out under the black, like a magenta cami with a black sweater. I rarely wear white/cream/camel – I just never feel good in light/soft colors. I like brown for accessories but I don’t actually wear brown that often. So for me, if I stuck exclusively to neutrals, it would be exclusively all black and grey…all the time. I find the color that I most often go to is a cobalt blue. I think when I realized what colors I like to wear (blue/magenta/yellow), I stopped buying things in colors I don’t like to wear (pastels/bright green/red/orange/coral) because I wanted something that was a color, any color, and then never wearing them.
I am all about the monochromatic look! You can never have too many neutrals!
Love this look! Question: is the shirt heather black or SD black cat grey? Thanks!
Hi Caroline –
Where do you look for inspiration to build your new wardrobe? I’ve been doing a lot on pinterest, but I am looking for other places to search to get fresh ideas. I am more interested in classic looks over current trends. Thanks!
Love this blog- I can really identify with minimalism. My husband, dog, and I live in a 450 sq ft apartment so we spend a lot of time considering a purchase before it makes it into the house. I still have some clothing I don’t wear and it’s finally in a separate pile to be sold/donated- thank you for the inspiration!
A couple things I’d love to see on here are a review of how your pieces held up through the season- ie did you stain your white shirt? Did the plaid shirt get all pilled up in the wash? This is my biggest struggle with clothing- I spend a lot of time considering an option and occasionally spending a lot of money on it only to find it doesn’t last.
Another thing I’d like to see is a collection of each piece- instead of scrolling through all of the outfit posts to see how you wore the black aritzia skirt, have them all linked, tagged, or compiled in one gallery so we can quickly see the ways you wore it. I’d love it if it extended through seasons too for items you roll over.
Yes! I would love it if you included a tag for each wardrobe piece you are wearing in each post so that it would be possible to sort your posts by wardrobe piece. =)
Very cool!
Do you ever feel like you are being attacked for caring about how you look? I just read an article about how fashion gets a bad reputation.

I’ve always felt a little conflicted about this, but the article made a lot of sense to me. :)
Love your jacket… And your hair!

in UK autumn I live in this outfit, so comfy, so cool and oh so black! I am so excited for your winter capsule. Here in the UK its already running in minus temperatures so I will be very interested to see your take on winter capsule. I look forward to reading your blog everyday, your take on minimalism is exactly like mine. Thanks for sharing!
I don’t even wear pants anymore. Fleece lined leggings are the way to go! -Audrey | Brunch at Audrey’s
Love this outfit. I tend to be more monochrome in the autumn/winter than the rest of the year but often brighten it up with light or bright colour scarf.
Massive hair envy too!

I have the opposite thing going on. As the weather gets colder, the light starker and the world outside almost bleak, I crave some warmth and color in my wardrobe. (During fall, on the other hand, I was very drawn to monochromatic outfits with sometimes just neutrals like cream, navy and black). Maybe I want to complement what’s going on outside?
Totally feeling the neutrals this winter! Namely grays and silvers and black. I’ve been add a bit of blush and burgundy items for color ( I had planned on ice blue, but just found myself repeatedly drawn to the blush in the stores, lol).
congrats on the 200th post!
You can never go wrong with black. Ive been rocking the all black look for weeks now.http://korinsusanne.blogspot.no
Hi Caroline,
Do you use any app to co-ordinate and save your outfit choices? If so, please can you share which one.
