If I could, I would start this post with a song + dance because I am THAT fired up about fall weather arriving in Texas this week. Lucky for you, I can only type, so you will be spared from seeing what my husband is seeing a lot of these days — me, singing and dancing in the kitchen.
It’s no secret that I like wearing neutrals. I love a good minimal, neutral outfit. But some days, I’m in the mood for something a little more playful + lively.
So when it came to my fall accessories, I knew I wanted to infuse them with pattern + color. That way, I could throw on a scarf or hat and add instant interest to an outfit. (Or … not. And keep my outfit minimal + neutral.)
Want to know my favorite accessory? It might surprise you — but I’m LOVING that buffalo check hat from Target. And — BONUS — it was stupid cheap.
I wear it all the time.
It’s true. While I can’t seem to figure out summer hats, I dominate fall + winter hats. :)
Cheetah Clutch / Slouchy Beanie / Fuzzy Scarf
Felt Hat (similar for less) / Triangle Scarf / Mini Crossbody Bag
Infinity Scarf / Tote (or a real leather one) / Buffalo Check Hat
Plaid Scarf (similar for less) / B&W Plaid Scarf / Pom Pom Beanie
What’s your favorite?
xo
I’m seriously having trouble picking a favorite! I’ve always loved the cheetah clutch, and now I’m eyeing the plaid scarf and b&w plaid scarf because both are so affordable and will add much needed punch to my neutral outfits. Hooray!
SO excited to see an accessories post! Would LOVE another post on accessorizing with jewelry pieces too!
Yay! That one’s coming next week, Robyn. ;) xo Caroline
I am DYING over that Triangle scarf.
Question: I know that your blog is minimalist/capsule fashion, but I was wondering if you are interested in expanding it to lifestyle? Your Pinterest and random musings show you follow a pretty minimalist lifestyle, where you put more focus on travel and experiences over materials. It would be nice to get tips/ideas on it :)
So glad to see you post about accessories! I’m feeling pretty good about my fall/winter capsules, but I do lean heavily toward “basics” and use accessories to jazz things up. So right now I’m in the process of weeding through accessories I don’t love + picking up ones I do. Would 2nd the poster who asked for a jewelry post, I’d love to know how you do that and how it fits into a minimalist wardrobe.
I love how you’ve been rocking your tote this season, Caroline! :-)
Favorites of my own? I’m definitely a scarf girl when things get colder. I have a favorite solid black cashmere scarf and a red and navy plaid wool scarf which will get lots of wear.
I’m in love with plaid for fall and winter :)
love this post caroline! i am also obsessed and doing a little dance over the fall accessories I have for the season. i just purchased these two at H&M, really loving the pop of orange this season. :)

Do you take your own accessory and clothing pictures, or do you pull them from the retailer websites? They’re so consistently bright and detailed, I’d love to know how to do it myself!
Love it! I’m also a neutrals girl at heart. Just bought a scarf from Leah Goren’s Etsy Shop with Tiger drawings on it at 50% off (I have so many scarves, it’s my only scarf purchase this year). I’m sort of obsessed, and the light orange over a navy blue adds the perfect abstract-ish pattern to my collection of solids (one of my learnings so far from my fall wardrobe — I need more pattern in my life! :) )
I loooove the beanie in the first row! The color is gorgeous!
Love,

I was so in love with some of these things I headed over to target for the hats and a scarf right after work! Fall was my first capsule and I can’t tell you how happy I am I found your blog and spin on this concept! First, Madewell just opened a store here in nashville and thanks to your posts I have a new favorite store! I ended up with a little less than 30 pieces in my capsule but am absolutely in love with everything in my closet and don’t know what to wear first! I too am looking for cooler weather here and hope to not have to add too many things to my winter capsule since it doesn’t usually get too bad here in the winter (I’m a recent transplant from Maryland) so I can splurge. On a few of those awesome madewell plaid scarfs!!! Look forward to seeing your posts every day and love your outfits you put together! Keep them coming :)
I LOVE that triangle scarf. And I’m tempted by that buffalo checked hat because although I always feel weird in floppy or felt hats, I feel right at home in a baseball cap. That one is pretty hip (and $12.99 – seriously!?). We live in Southern California so it doesn’t feel quite fall yet (I lived in San Antonio and Phoenix before this so I’m fully in the 70 degrees = boot weather phase of my life) but am so ready to start incorporating more fall elements. Thanks for sharing these. P.S. Listened to your podcast on The Lively Show….loved it!
Love the idea of bringing colour into your wardrobe with accessories! I particularly like the felt hat and clutch!

I love your round-up of fall accessories (yes, we can start to think about these in Texas!). More importantly, I super, duper love your blog.
I have done a style overhaul going toward neutrals as well, and I agree that this approach is really helpful. I always like neutral outfits on pinterest but when I wear them myself, I often find something’s missing… Enter the colorful scarf / eyecatching shoes / cute necklace :). Accessories also make it easy to experiment with color without really committing.
That being said, I naturally gravitate towards solid colored scarves but I’m trying to add a little more pattern. I’m on the lookout for a plaid wool scarf (love plaid!) but haven’t found one in the muted, cooler color department yet. And your triangle scarf seems just lovely for slightly warmer days, and still easy to style with the ton-sur-ton print …
My favorite accessory this fall is also a hat! It’s a leather baseball cap from ASOS…it gives me just the right amount of “tomboy cool.” And I thought I hated baseball-style caps!
