Woohoo! It’s the first outfit of the remix series!
I’d wear this one just about anywhere during the day — errands, working from a coffee shop, or meeting up with a friend for lunch.
Styling Notes:
Cuff / To give these full length jeans a different vibe, I rolled them twice at the bottom to create thick cuffs. Now they look more like ankle jeans.
Unbutton / When trying to decide how to style the button down, I thought of tucking it in or tying it in a knot at the waist, but I do those things all the time and wanted to try something a little different. So I simply left the bottom button unbuttoned. Sounds overly simple, but I was surprised at the difference it made in the shape of the shirt — it gave it this cool split “V” front — especially with a jacket on. It also added a bit of dimension to the outfit, because anytime I move, it gives a peek at the high rise jeans going on underneath. (No skin showing, just the jeans.)
Two colors + a pattern in one of those colors / My black and blue palette falls more on the neutral side of things, just the way I like it. I started creating the outfit from the denim jacket, then picked the black jeans since they work so well with that jacket. Then when it came time to pick the top (and pattern), I pulled in striped top in blue — a color that’s already going on because of the denim jacket. I’m finding that this is a pretty fail proof combination when it comes to creating an outfit with interest.
Since it’s back-to-school season and all, let’s give this outfit a grade, shall we? I’d give it an A+. It’s comfortable (broken-in, flat shoes with comfort inserts), functional (layers for changing temperatures), and it feels very true to my style (denim, neutral colors, stripes — all hallmarks of my style).
Joining in on the remix fun? Here’s today’s assignment: ‘Gram your first outfit and tag it #unfancyremix so we can all follow along.
Tell me, was it easy or tough to pick the 10 pieces for your remix? And how are you feeling about the challenge overall? Confident? Nervous? Just having fun with it? Sound off in the comments!
See you tomorrow for the second outfit!

xo,
Hi Caroline
This is super cute! I love the style tips!
Can’t wait to see more of the outfit posts xx
I love it! A+ indeed. :) That striped shirt usually looks so billowy, so it’s cool to see looking more structured under the denim jacket. Totally different vibe going on. I really like the format of this post, too. Can’t wait for the rest of your remix!
Super cute! Love that you’re blogging daily for these two week.
I didn’t pick out 10 items, but have a very small wardrobe to begin with. I love wearing comfy outdoorsy clothes, and could pretty much (and practically do) live in Patagonia clothes. :)
awesome outfit! it´s classy and cool :)
Surprisingly picking out my 10 items was a lot easier than I anticipated but I sort of stuck to a formula I’ve seen in other challenges like this…2 pairs of shoes (one more formal one more casual, however you define that), two bottoms with different looks (went with skinny jeans versus a fuller maxi skirt), then various weights and layering abilities of tops and jackets. Already brainstormed my various outfits so now it’s just a matter of matching them with the ranging temperatures and activities of each day!
Hey Elizabeth, sounds like a great formula! You got this :) xo, Caroline
So cute! I can’t wait to see the next outfit…this is such a great idea for a series! :)

Love, love, love! Can’t wait to see the other remixes!
Hi Caroline, I’m curious – why the inserts in your shoes? Sorry to ask rather a personal question!!
Hi Cass! It’s all about comfort and practicality for me. The insoles just give a nice soft lining to the shoe and make it much more enjoyable to walk around in :) xo, Caroline
I love all the styling notes–so helpful! I’m really excited about this series.
Great outfit! I’d love to hear more about the shoe inserts. Do you use them in all flats? I have a similar pair of flats that slip off the heels as I walk. Can inserts help with that? Thanks!
Hi Jing! I think insoles could help, or you can try a heel-liner like this: http://bit.ly/2cWKnrQ That should help prevent slipping heels :) xo, Caroline
Oh, Caroline…lovely post, per usual! :) I happen to prefer these more wordy posts…you have such a fun and carefree (yet informative) style of writing, and it’s truly a joy to read. I love this 10 X 10 idea! It’s comfy and lightweight (to fit your TX temps!), but still has an autumn vibe. I currently live in the Midwest, and we’re bizarrely experiencing 80/90 degree weather still, so my sweaters and scarves are hiding out in storage. :/ I was initially bummed out about this (cozy autumn clothes are my favorite!), but your determination to put an autumn spin on hotter temps really inspired me! Xx
Hey Laura, I’m so glad! Hopefully Fall will arrive soon for you, but until then you can make it work :) xo, Caroline
I really like your outfit! And the remix is a great idea xxx

Loving the outfit! How do you stay cool in it? I live in Texas too and I would be dying! (But I am walking a lot since I am in college.)
Hi Rachel! I’d just remove the jacket — that striped top is lighter than air! :) xo, Caroline
Love, love, loving this! The styling notes are perfect – I tend to “formula dress” so seeing how what seem like subtle tweaks can change a look helps me not overthink things. Can’t wait to see the rest of your remixes!
Love this outfit! Smart putting insoles into your flats. Do the high heel insoles work for flat shoes?
Hi Victoria! I’m not sure if the high heel ones will work, I guess it depends on the material and if they are flexible or not. I use the Dr. Scholl’s Dreamwalk Line: http://bit.ly/2crJAhi :) xo, Caroline
I love this idea of one outfit every day, and I was looking forward to opening your post. Thank you also for introducing me to style bee.
Hey Tina, Style Bee is a great blog, right? :) xo, Caroline
I am wearing almost this exact same thing today! Went with CoH high rise skinnies, blue striped sleeveless shirt tucked in, t-strap Frye sandals and Madewell denim jacket.
Alyssa, sounds so cute! Great minds think alike :) xo, Caroline
Love the blue denim + black denim. I also like how you break down the look a little. I fell in a blog rabbit hole yesterday (starting with your blogger friend from the last post :) ). Anyway came across a blogger friend of hers (Moriah maybe?) who posted outfits and then a succinct “what to take away” kind of breakdown of the look. I really liked that! It reminded me a little of what you do here, it sure helps us novices learn what exactly it is I like about the look instead of just trying to copy it verbatim! :) thank you for sharing!
Hi Kate, thanks for the nice comment! Glad to hear :) xo, Caroline
*Love* the styling notes! Thanks for including them so we get a peek at your inspiration and thought process as you pieced the look together. I was hoping that would be something you’d do with these posts, so it made me very happy to see it included and get to read through it on today’s post. (Love the outfit, too, btw!)
Love it! Love the styling notes. I feel like I have pretty plain/neutral “style” and love seeing the little twists you add to give an outfit a boost!
I have the same Madewell flats and I’m surprised to hear you can put an insert in them. Are they noticeable? Looking forward to the rest of your remixes!
Hi Kate! They inserts aren’t really noticeable. I use these ones: http://bit.ly/2crJAhi :) xo, Caroline
I love leaving the bottom button undone always! I kind of love that, “I just couldn’t be bothered” look. Sometimes I’ll tuck the underside flap into the top of my jeans or skirt too and it makes it look mussed and kind of French. A+ for sure.
I love the casual vibe of your outfit!

Such a cute, perfect outfit! So excited for the rest of the remix! :)
Really love that combo and the style tips. They are very helpful to a newbie like me. Also excited about the daily pics.
I just want to throw out a request/suggestion: I am an ethical vegan (and suspect I’m not alone here among your readers, as people who gather here are living intentional lives and making conscious choices) and would so appreciate non-leather vegan options included in the shopping links for similar alternatives to the pieces you share in your posts. Thank you! XO
Hey Rebecca, thanks for the suggestion. I will keep it in mind as I’m hunting for similar items :) xo, Caroline
Dang. I wasn’t going to do the 10 outfit remix, but your all-neutral palette really, really, really makes me want to try it with LOTS OF COLOR just to prove that it’s possible.
Ladylyn! I wish you would! I’d love to see how it turns out :) xo, Caroline
In love with this outfit! Definitely an outfit that you can run around town in while still looking put together :)

Love your denim jacket! I’m on the hunt for a good one myself. x

Jen, definitely a worthwhile purchase! It never seems to go out of style :) xo, Caroline
So chill and casual! Love this outfit xx

I love this outfit. It’s still gets really hot here (Northwest Arkansas) by midday, so I haven’t broken out my jean jacket yet. But I have a question, how did you figure your size for the shirt? I’ve been toying around with buying it for a while, but I can’t get a read on the customer reviews, and I thought – hey, this is the perfect place to ask! In the whisper tees I wear a medium. So excited to see the rest of you 10×10 remix!
Hey Kristen! Have you tried taking your measurements? I would compare that with their sizing chart as a first line of defense. The top does run a little big, so you’d probably be safe with a Small, but I think it really depends on the look you’re going for. Good luck! :) xo, Caroline
Hi Caroline!
I picked up my 10 pieces yesterday (come from Belgium, it’s 21st september today, 10:15 am) and it was so difficult! Still now, I’m not sure I picked up the good pieces.. Let’s just figured it out during those 10 days! Feel a little nervous about this challenge but decide to take it for fun!
I would love to have your opinion (on my instagram: @lison_v)
A big thanks for the inspiration you give me! :)
I always end up feeling like collared shirts look too stiff and formal on me — you’ve inspired me to give them another go! Maybe it’s all in the details of the shirt and the styling.
Hey Alice! Yes, I think they can actually send off a really relaxed vibe with the right styling. Maybe start with a chambray or a soft linen to see if you like it! :) xo, Caroline
Haha, today I was wearing a pale blue chambray shirt/peasant top with black jeans and a blue denim jacket (I took the jacket off at 9am after dropping the children off at school). I did nearly wear my striped shirt instead, too. Great outfit.
I’m a great fan of turning up jeans for a slightly different look (probably not in mid winter). Or rolling up shirt sleeves too.
Love your blog! And this post!
I’m so glad you are doing daily outfits again! Your blog has inspired me to be much more mindful about my pieces and has definitely changed my wardrobe for the better. I am a long time madewell customer as well and have the same striped shirt as the one you are wearing in this post. Would you mind sharing what size you have in this shirt? I can’t quite decide if the one I have is too big or not… it’s bit more flowy than I usually wear but I still like it.
Thanks!
Allison
