Hi. :)
Two quick things for your weekend:
1 / SOMETHING TO READ
I didn’t think I would love In The Company of Women by Grace Bonney as much as I do. I have to admit, since it’s a coffee table book, I assumed it might be more style than substance.
It’s not.
And also, assumptions — I want less of those in my life.
In The Company of Women is simply a series of short Q+A’s with different creative women, but the utter diversity of these women served as a welcome reminder that it’s okay to go my own way — there is no single right path, no single right motivation, no single right definition of success.
There are too many favorite quotes to share, but I’ve been thinking about assumptions lately, and this quote hit me square in the nose:
“The world needs more face-to-face conversation, perhaps over a meal, so we can really get to know each other without assumptions. The world needs fewer sound bites where those assumptions are formed.” -Carla Hall, Chef + Television Host
2 / SOMETHING TO LISTEN TO
Want some feel good fall tunes? Check out my fall playlist on Spotify.
It’s got a nostalgic, happy vibe with a mix of artists like Fleetwood Mac, John Mayer, Van Morrison, The Civil Wars, Lord Huron, Nickel Creek, Emily King, She and Him, and Vampire Weekend.
It’s on repeat around here these days as it slowwwwly gets cooler … or perhaps I should say as it slowly gets less warm? Real fall vs fantasy fall, y’all — that’s why I can still wear shorts in October. :)

Happy Friday. :)
xo,
Hi Caroline,
the funny thing about your outfit is that I would wear it during the hottest days over here (northern europe).
Maybe not in the brightest sunshine but then again, if it’s windy maybe yes.
I’m looking forward to your winter challenge!
I would kill to wear shorts still in October! In Canada though… even though we’ve had a warm fall for us… it’s definitely becoming real late fall weather now! Every year I have a hard time adjusting to needing an actual jacket at this transition time. And i often leave the house underdessed! But I put away all my real summery clothes weeks ago already. :(
Here too, although there are plenty of people still in fantasy summer here in the UK who must be freezing… I got my parka out last week as it is warm as well as waterproof and we’ve had a lot of rain. Shorts and summer seem a long time ago… I’m still hoping to wear jackets for a bit longer on warmer days.
I’m looking forward to listening to your playlist, really enjoying getting more in touch with music again. Thanks.
Your hair is adorable! Can you get a close-up of the back so I can see how you do your braid?
Thanks lady! =)
We’ll be cuing up your fall playlist in Chicago over coffee tomorrow morning! Thanks, Caroline.
I haven’t read the book but I am intrigued. I would recommend you listen to her Girlboss Radio guesting. They talk more about the book. :)
I’m currently reading “Always Magic in the Air: The Bomp and Brilliance of the Brill Building Era.” Always down for further music education!
And I have a bunch of playlists on my Spotify: http://open.spotify.com/user/punkydoodle
Lots of artist and genre intros, plus some new, fun seasonal Halloween playlists. :)
Caroline, I really love your Morning Coffee playlist. Thank you for creating it :)
I’m starting to wonder if anyone get’s to live the Pinterest perfect fantasy fall. It seems to be either way too hot or way too cold. Sadly, I’m in the way too cold climate and I’m struggling with dressing warm enough. If you come up with any cute layering tips, please share them. I really need some help with dressing warm and cute.
Good question Maria! You’re right, even the most perfect fall days are very short lived, so probably most of us are living in the fantasy! I am working hard on layering my looks, so I’ll be keeping you guys posted as I go :) xo, Caroline
Hello Caroline. Reading In the Company of Women. Love the quote: Travel. Even if it’s just down the block. Your simple lifestyle has been such an inspiration to me. Have a great weekend. Liz.
I’m absolutely in love with this outfit!!!
Know what I love about your blog? That it sometimes gives inspiration beyond outfits and fashion. Thank you for Grace Bonney and the playlist. Perfect for a dull and foggy fall day (no shorts:-(). Happy anniversary!
Aw, thank you Tina! :) xo, Caroline
Caroline, I love your blog post! Could you do us thrifty folks a favor? Even if your item is old, are you able to post the maker at least? Like that drapey beige sweater from two posts ago? Some of us stalk eBay… :) Ha ha!
Hey Sarah, I sure can! (And that sweater is from Anthropologie!) :) xo, Caroline
You are my favorite blogger. I love your substance as well as your style.
Thank you for what you do!
Just discovered your blog, so glad! What a refreshment to see a minimalist lifestyle/fashion blog! I am on my downsizing journey as well. I have two articles on my website with tried-and-tested tips on how to clear out your closet and be done with the “nothing-to-wear” symptom!
Beautiful blog, keep up the good work!
PS. Love your dog’s name ;)

Hi Caroline. I apopgise in advance for the length of my comment. I’ve been following your blog for a little over a year. At the time of finding you, you were on haitus, but I started reading your posts from the beginning because I had the opposite problem as you – I never bought anything for myself. I thought perhaps you could help me develop a personal style because you shared so honestly with your posts. My uniform at the time was blue jeans, black tshirt and either a black pullover or cardigan. Everyday – really. I already had a minimal wardrobe. I needed inspiration to build a better wardrobe and invest in myself. This morning it makes me a little teary to say how thankful I am to you in helping me care again about how I look and feel in my clothes and skin. I’m still in the beginning phases of outfit design and buying pieces for myself. Just about everyday I try to look and feel good without taking it too seriously. I want you to know how grateful and thankful I am for you. I’m a little larger than the sizes they offer at most of the places you source from so its difficult to support Unfancy in that way, but I mention your blog to people who may also benefit from it in their own personal development. Thank you Miss Caroline.
Oh Jill! That is about the sweetest comment ever! Thank you so much for sharing and even more, congratulations on your progress. Taking care of yourself is hard to put on the priority list sometimes, but it’s so important. Thank you again! :) xo, Caroline
I have In the Company of Women on hold request at the library, and can’t wait to read it! I think you saying it’s a coffee table book with substance makes me want to get it for keeps. Do you think it’s something a person might want to read more than just once through?
I’m in San Antonio and wore shorts today! Gotta love Texas!

Caroline, how do you to it that you put on three things that on their own are so simple and perhaps even a little boring (not at all meant in an offensive way) and you make them look so fab? Like the coolest girl next door style? No accessories, no rings, necklaces, bracelets or handbags, just your hair done nicely. If I wore the exact same outfit I’d look like I’m wearing pyjamas. You got some magic, girl.
xo Kat
Love this outfit! Serious it’s what I wish I was wearing today
Hi Caroline,
first of all: thanks a lot for writing so regularly, and personal. I have lost my own style for a couple of years now but I feel like this site and your approach is helping me a lot. It truly means a lot for me to read all this from a woman feeling good about herself (my own goal).
Secondly: since I’m living in a rather cold climate, I was wondering if you would write something about coats and your opinion. Here it is often the first impression one gives about herself, and also it works like a ‘shield’, since in long winter months you wear it all the time. In short: good reason to find my own style for a good winter coat. I’d love to hear your experiences and opinions about it, if you’re willing to share them!!
Your Morning Coffee playlist is my go-to playlist while I work–I’ve had it on repeat for months! Now, I alternate between Morning Coffee and Feel Good Fall! I can’t wait to try out your holiday playlists–you have taste in music and fashion! Keep the playlists coming! ?
Even this year in WV fall hasn’t hit until just this past weekend. Coming from a place where frost and even flurries aren’t unusual for October, having these 75+ degree days is downright creepy. I’m living in un-reality fall this year lol.
