Un-Fancy

fall outfits, Outfits: Fall

it’s 50/50: this outfit kind of worked, but kind of didn’t

10/10/16

fall-4307 fall-4311 fall-4310 fall-4309 fall-4308

Remember that time I wore this dress as a shirt? And that other time I wore this dress over jeans?

Both happened in my fall remix challenge, and both got me questioning if I could style this dress in even more surprising ways.

Since I’m really into knotting things right now (as evidenced by last Friday’s post) I figured I’d try to knot this dress into a shirt.

I’ve got to be honest — the idea was a good one, but the execution didn’t quite work out how I expected.

It looks pretty cool in the photos, but it gave me a mega fabric pooch right over my stomach — not really the place you want a fabric pooch, know what I mean? You can kind of see it in the first and second photo.

I think it would have worked out better if I’d simply tucked in the dress.

Oh well, right? Sometimes an outfit just doesn’t quite work out.

How about you? Tried an outfit lately that just didn’t quite work? Tell me about it!

You’re right- it does look cute in the photos :) I think I would love the look with a similarly cut (but shorter) silk tee. Love your creativity!

Well it looks great in the photos! Thanks for for the inspiration to plait my hair. Today was rainy again (UK) and my curly hair goes wild in the wet weather. I had a nice compliment from a friend, so I might do it more often :).

My black dress is an A-line, so I won’t even try this. :)

Those jeans are great – so flattering on you! I think a reason this outfit doesn’t work well to me is that the black of your dress and pants are too disparate. I usually think all black is chic, especially with the cognac leather accents, but here they seem too tonally off. This is something I’m sensitive to on myself, so it might be on my mind too much, but maybe it could have worked better with a colored or patterned dress as the “top.” What fabric is that dress? If it’s silky that could be what’s making it tricky to knot without pouching.

The dress is 100% silk, so you might be right about the material! :) xo, Caroline

I’ve been into knotting things too… But I figured out a technique that I like even better! I twist up the dress/tunic/shirt as if I’m going to knot it, but instead of tying the twisted “tail” into a knot, I just tuck it in! So it still gives it a bit of that twisted asymmetrical look that a knot gives… But it’s less bulky, more smooth like a “front tuck”. It’s like a hybrid of the two- and the best of both worlds. Did that make sense? It’s hard to explain it without a picture… ;)

Hey Kristine, I like that idea too! Might work for tops that aren’t quite long enough for a full on knot as well. :) xo, Caroline

I think it looks cute but could see where it is maybe a little too baggy for your preference.

Knotting doesn’t usually work for me. I’m plus size and tying something high up shows some tummy rolls I’m keen on showing off.

I do a hair tie trick where I gather the fabric from the inside, and instead of knotting, tie a small rubber band or hair tie on the inside. It makes a cool starburst kind of look on the outside and I can gather as little or as much as I want. :)

Hey Laura, great idea for a different way of knotting. Thanks for sharing :) xo, Caroline

Love your willingness to share in outfits that didn’t necessarily work out! From the photos, I would say it works, but can personally understand why you’d have liked it better with just a half tuck. :)

I just tried to knot a t-shirt dress and failed miserably, haha. But, looks great in your photos! Also, I decided to wear all black with tan bag and shoes today because of your post, thanks for sharing!

I love the idea to wear a tshirt dress as a tshirt! I’ve been wearing my plain tees in a side knot too! I love how it instantly gives you a nice shape and makes you look more put together :)

I wonder if it would work to make a cute little tie/knot in the back instead? I don’t think I could do it on my own (hand coordination and mirror issues), but that might be a fun way to style a tshirt dress with jeans? I like this look either way :)

Hey Marie, that’s a great idea too. Might have helped with the fabric bunching in front. Un-fancy readers are so clever! :) xo, Caroline

If you hadn’t told this outfit didn’t work, I wouldn’t have noticed – it looks so pretty in the photo :)
Now I’m dying to try this knot trick in one of my tees because of you, it’s so cute! Also, I love the total black inspiration + the cognac bag and booties, they worked really well with the whole outfit!

I hear you. I’m doing my 10×10 right now, and tried to put a slim-fitting dress over high-rise skinnies, but got some major pooch going on when I tried to tuck in the dress OR knot it, and it just didn’t work. Oh well — I think the style works better for a loose-fitting dress. I do love this look though!

I love seeing the different ways you style a black dress. I have a similar casual black dress that hasn’t seen much action lately but you’re inspiring me to go outside the box and try new things. Mine wouldn’t work as well being tucked in but I’ve been thinking of wearing a button up shirt or turtleneck underneath or a big sweater on top. I will also be trying it on top of jeans like you did in your fall remix.

You have a figure that can pull off some bunchy fabric! I think your outfits with one or two black pieces look especially great on you, and I love where your style is going this year. I envy how streamlined your wardrobe is – mine is full of bright colors so it gets out of control, although it can be fun. But you have inspired me to include more white and denim, and it feels refreshingly classic!

Hmmm…very interesting. I liked it in the photo, but we definitely don’t want a fabric pooch, ha!
