The other day someone asked me a great question:
How do you motivate yourself to dress cute and comfy even if you are just going to be around the house?
Three quick thoughts:
Try dressing in levels.
Most of my outfits happen in two levels — a home level (one) and a going out level (two).
For example, with this outfit, when I got dressed in the morning, I just put on a tank top and these jeans. Level one — and suuuper comfortable for around the house.
But then, when it was time to go out, I threw this sweater over the tank top and added the clogs, bag, and necklace. Boom, level two!
For yesterday’s outfit, level one was a simple tee and jean shorts. To take it to level two, I added the cardigan, Birks, and bag.
The key is to have remarkably comfortable pieces in your closet that work for level one — AKA they’ve got to be as comfortable as yoga pants.
Bake “getting ready” into your morning routine.
Personally, I feel better when I start the day dressed. But even still, sometimes I want to jump right into work mode without getting ready first. So I try to take a bath or shower every single morning to get myself out of my PJs and into some real clothes. It’s simple, but it works.
Close the gap between fantasy wardrobe and real life wardrobe.
Remember the lifestyle pie chart from my capsule planner?
I fill it out a couple times a year, and still have a hard time admitting to myself that I spend 70-80% of my time at home.
Since I work from home, it makes sense. But something in me decides that’s not cool enough — so sometimes I trick myself into thinking that I spend 40% of my time at home.
Since I’m not being honest with myself, I end up with fantasy life clothes, instead of real life clothes.
I’m getting considerably better at closing that fantasy life / real life gap these days, but I absolutely still make mistakes sometimes. Closing that gap takes patience, but we can do it if we just stick with it.
Your turn! Do you work from home? I’m curious how you would answer this question: How do you motivate yourself to dress cute and comfy even if you are just going to be around the house? Got any tips and tricks on closing the gap between fantasy wardrobe and real life wardrobe?

xo,
As a stay at home mom, I’m with you! I always get ready for the day. Lately there has been less hair washing and less makeup application, but I do always get dressed. I just feel like I’m ready for whatever is thrown my way at that point!
As a PhD student, I spent about 70% of my time at home working on my research. I’m totally the same — I usually lay out my outfits the night before to encourage me to get up and get dressed. It puts me in the right mindset and I’m usually more productive throughout the day!
This is me too. I’m writing my dissertation, so I rarely have an excuse to actually get dressed up nice. But I’ll convince myself that I might go to a coffee shop, or just any thing that would involve leaving the house. Plus I feel more motivated to work on my research when I feel “together,” which includes getting dressed.
Laying out outfits is a great idea! I’ve got to start doing that.
I work from home and used to love just waking up and diving into work in my PJs. Then later in the morning I’d take a break and shower, brush my teeth, dress, etc. It was fine, except that sometimes I wanted to leave the house but was too lazy to get dressed… Now I have a baby, and so if I want to have a shower without anyone crying in the background I have to do it first thing in the morning before my husband leaves the house. That’s a huge motivator! Days with a baby are unexpected and they feel 100% better if I go through them in a nice outfit.
I have been working from home full-time for 6 months now. Most days I just have on a “house” dress which is an old dress that I don’t wear out anymore
And other days I do what you are calling a Level 1 which usually a dress or tank and jeans. It depends if I have somewhere to go after I get off work.
I’m an avid follower of your blog, but lately I have not been getting email notifications of new posts. I try to re add, and it keeps saying I have opted out of subscription. I check WordPress, and it says I am still following…has anyone else had this issue? Please advise!
Hi Amy! It’s a problem all around. Nobody is getting my emails as far as I know! We are working on the problem, sorry! xo, Caroline
Good to know! I wondered if it was just me. As a workaround I subscribed in Bloglovin’ and turned on notifications. By the way, I’m absolutely loving the new(ish) direction you are going with the blog these days! And those jeans, they have been in my cart for a month now but I’ve never spent that much on one pair before and I’m scared!
Hey Dawn! Trust me, I get the feeling! Splurging on something like that is always nerve racking, but I think I’ve already worn them enough that they were one of the smarter purchases I’ve made. :) Luckily Nordstrom has a good return policy if all else fails. Just saying! ;) xo, Caroline
Oh, i’m terrible about that! I work in an office, and live on a farm. There’s a CLEAR divide between home wardrobe and work/out of the house wardrobe. Plus no makeup and any beauty routine on days i’m not going out. I just don’t care. Why would I wear anything i would be worried about messing up arpund the house if i know it probably will? Ech, the other side?
Same (re: not getting dressed up at home).
I have two cats and anything I wear around the apartment will be COVERED in cat fur. Some things i can get away with wearing (anything grey), but I almost always change into leisure-home clothes when I get home.
Tangent:
I have recently discovered that my wardrobe has become so, so casual lately (which generally I love, still chic but very athleisure/boyfriend jeans oriented). With all the fall/winter layering and general cold weather in New York, I think it’s a challenge to get dressed up while staying warm—I am clearly someone who values WARMTH and comfort over almost anything, and come the truly grueling winter months I surely won’t be prioritizing fashion. I just bought three new tops (so I can still wear warm pants!) and a dress on sale, all intended for more elevated evening looks and I’m excited to try them out.
Hey Sylwia, that’s totally understandable. I might feel the same way if I lived on a farm! Thanks for sharing what works for you! :) xo, Caroline
I work from home 3 days a week, and I’m at home with a toddler on weekends… and I’m pregnant again. Trust me when I say I know the struggle.
Personally: I HATE wearing pants when I don’t need to, and most dresses feel too ‘dressed up’ for being at home (plus shorter dresses = shaving my legs every day, and, um, nope).
Conclusion: I have ‘base’ outfits that I feel super cute in: black leggings (NOT sweatpants or PJ pants) and tunic-length tank top, usually with a cute ponytail and lipstick (seriously, the lipstick is key). Occasionally a scarf or wrap if it’s chilly. When I walk in front of a mirror and I’m like, huh, that’s CUTE. And then to leave the house I add a nice jacket/sweater and a good pair of boots, and done. To be fair: I live in a place where wearing lipstick AT ALL immediately makes you more dressed up than 95% of the people, so leggings are totally leave-the-house wear.
Sweatpants, PJ pants, or things that make me feel ‘uncute’ are not all-day clothes for me. The clothes I wear aren’t any more expensive or constraining (maternity leggings and t-type top: 25$ total, thanks Old Navy), but they’re comfy and cute and I can leave the house without feeling embarassed. Done.
Hi Ros, thank you for sharing what works for you! It just feels good to be somewhat put together. And you’re right — I bet a little lipstick goes a long way :) xo, Caroline
If I stay in my PJs all day, I’m too relaxed to get any work done. I just want to cuddle up in bed all day. Getting ready in the morning is so important to start the day off right! I love those heels too!
http://www.thebeautydojo.com
I am a stay at home mum too, I need to get dressed and out the house early for the school run. I do the lay the outfits out the night before too. I often come back and put yoga pants on (to do yoga/workout) but then put my “proper” clothes back on to do stuff round the house, appointments etc.
We’ve started to go out more and it’s taken me a while to get used to dressing for an evening out again. But I found a “uniform” of silky/crepe top, jeans, heeled clogs; add a jacket with wedge boots for colder weather.
Hey Tanya, that’s exciting that you’re getting to go out again! :) Sounds like you’re getting your routine and your uniform down. xo, Caroline
I love your blog!!!! Real fashion for real people and very fashion forward!!!❤️❤️
I’m a work from home person too! I always always shower, fix my hair, apply at least a little bit of make up. Always. Even if my only plan to leave the apartment is to go for a run or to the gym, I prepare as if I do have somewhere to go. I don’t, however, wear more than yoga pants and a t-shirt unless I really do leave my apartment. Showering and doing my hair is enough to mentally prepare me for work.
Hey Jill, that sounds like a great routine. Nothing wrong with some comfy yoga pants! I even considered doing a “loungewear” capsule for my favorite comfy things. :) xo, Caroline
would love to see a post about your loungewear capsule! I struggle to find stylish looks that fill the gap between “going out” and “PJs”.
ditto on wanting a post about loungewear! the struggle is real in that in-between area where i don’t want to wear out my “good” clothes around the house but i also don’t want to just wear stretched out yoga pants and a sweatshirt!
Yes, I’d love a “loungewear” post! I live for being super comfortable and I tend to change into “comfies” the minute I get home (large, hairy dog = way too much hair on my real clothes). I think I need to seriously up my loungewear game, though…it’s getting a bit embarrassing! :)
It can really help to pick things out the night before. I’m more of a night owl, so deciding what to wear the night before makes the next morning easier. Then I can change up accessories the day of, but the major decisions have already been made. :)
Jackie, smart smart! :) xo, Caroline
You probably won’t catch me in jeans if I’m home, unless I am in between going places or waiting for someone to come over. I work from home about two days a week, and my favorite part about that is literally rolling out of bed and onto my computer. That is also because my normal commute is an hour each way, or longer. But I think I have something similar, it just starts if I’m leaving the house. For me, my Level 1 would be if I need to just run an errand. I not to let myself leave the house in sweats unless I have the flu, and gym clothes are for the gym. Sometimes I go to work at the coffee shop or have something bigger than the grocery store planned, and then might reach my level two – meaning better shoes and mascara.
I do think for those that are at home every day, it is probably mentally beneficial to change out of your PJs at some point in the day. When I work from home and literally stay in my pajamas unshowered without going outside, it definitely negatively affects my mood by the afternoon.
Hey Gabby, yeah, I can understand that feeling. As if staying motivated in the late afternoon isn’t hard enough! :) xo, Caroline
Hi Caroline! I am working out everyday except Sundays -I am a doctor-, but I must say that I am not so motivated to dress cute everyday. It is really confusing for me to select the comfortable and cute clothes every morning.
I just decided to set up a capsule wardrope. But it takes time to discover my style, the colors I love, etc.
I wonder how much time did you spend to discover your real style?
Hi Nedime! Great question. It has taken me a couple of years to sort of streamline my style. And don’t get me wrong — things change and I still make mistakes along the way. Even recently I have felt my style shifting (and I’ll be exploring that more with you all along the way). I don’t know if there’s ever a final “I’m DONE, my wardrobe is perfect!” but I think we can definitely get closer to that, especially when we are thoughtful about the items in our closet. Good luck on your capsule! :) xo, Caroline
I’m so impressed with everyone’s discipline! I’ve worked from home for the past two years and while I do make sure I change out of my pajamas, I just can’t make myself sit around my house alone all day in jeans and a real bra! Haha! I have worked on cultivating a “lounge” wardrobe of leggings, tunics, and long slouchy sweaters plus bralettes for my typical “workday wear.” I do find it’s important for me to change out of my pj’s to feel good and be productive. I feel like my jeans and bras are good and comfy, but somehow I also want them off when I’m home! Bralettes are not supportive enough for me to wear out of the house, but they are the perfect comfort piece for my home office. I think like one person said above, I feel cute in leggings and a tunic so it works for me. I’m a homebody so I do find I struggle sometimes to get out and stay active with my work from home lifestyle. I find routine is key (as always) but I’d love to hear your tips for keeping a routine on a work from home schedule (since you are not a mom yet either!)
Hi Sarah, that sounds great! Thanks for sharing what works for you :) xo, Caroline
I work from home and do struggle with the temptation to stay in my PJs all day. But I find I’m so much more productive if I get dressed and make a little effort to look good (well like a human). Having a blog to take photos for helps as no one wants to see a fashion post of me wearing old sweats and my husband’s hoodie.
Hey Jen, ain’t that the truth! Haha :) xo, Caroline
I work from home a good amount. Getting dressed makes me feel better, but on days when I don’t want to bother, I accesorize first. I put on some fun earrings or a headwrap. Once I have done that it only makes sense to put on a cute outfit to complete look.
I do not work from home, but on the weekends I put on my most presentable yoga pants and t-shirts. I can go out in public comfortably and clean the house as well. The really bummy stuff gets saved for workouts and sleep.
Ugghhh I work from home and this topic is very difficult for me, during winter (I’m in the South Hemisphere) I found really hard to get out of my PJs, robe, and slippers. During warmth days I have more energy to dress like a proper adult before jumping to my desk, but always keeping it simple and casual as you do.
I REALLY struggle with having a decent hair, I just wear it in a messy bun, I can’t for the life of me get a cute braid or something less boring.
I have a slightly different approach for working from home — I’m allowed to wear my bathrobe & slippers until 10am — then I have an alarm and I go upstairs and get ready.
Waiting until mid-morning lets me get dressed when my energy & creativity is higher and is a great mid morning “coffee break”.
While I hate noticing that it’s noon and being in my PJs — makes me feel gross — it feels totally luxurious to drink my tea and sit down with my laptop in my bathrobe.
Also — LOVE this outfit. Closer to my style than typical for you – cozy & casual with an edge of feminine sex appeal. :)
Hey Rebecca, that sounds like the perfect balance. Thank you for sharing! :) xo, Caroline
I do the exact same thing! It’s like it takes me two hours and two cups of coffee to wake up enough to get ready.
I work from home most days – but try to always go out to get lunch or do a yoga class, or something outside. That motivates me to dress in a way that’s presentable in the morning so I can just leave the house whenever I want & not look like a freak! So really, I’m dressing for the ‘public’ part of my day – but I find it also motivates me to work harder, as I feel professional rather than slobby.
I’m a stay at home mom of a 6 month old which means I’ve spent the better part of the last 6 months in pajamas. I know I feel better when I get dressed for the day – similar to your Level 1 outfits. It’s just so hard to find the time and motivation. But I like the idea of switching my routine to shower in the morning while my husband is still home. That will ensure that I do actually get out of pjs and have some baby free time to put proper clothes on. Thanks for the idea!
Hey Emily! Yay! Love when Unfancy readers share such great advice and help each other out :) xo, Caroline
I work from home every day and definitely struggle with this. One thing I’ve found that works is to schedule any errands or appointments for first thing in the morning. That way you are forced to get dressed and put some makeup on before starting the day!
I think of it as practice. If I put effort into how I dress every day, then my style has a chance to evolve and I don’t miss an opportunity to try a new outfit or experiment. It’s even better when I’m just at home because I can experiment more and see how I feel wearing something for a day without many people judging me. I get to find out what I truly enjoy wearing.
Hi Margaret, that’s a great way of looking at it. Thanks for sharing! :) xo, Caroline
Yay! I always enjoy your outfit ideas & this one is super!:)
I’m all about comfort and we’re pretty much the same as level 1 & 2 tips! Awesome post!;)

I bought an apron. A big barrier for me wearing decent clothes was worrying about getting something on them while cooking. I feel very throwback while wearing it, but it works.
Hey Margie, how smart! Thank you for sharing :) xo, Caroline
I worked in a big corporate environment for many years. I loved dressing up for work everyday. But eventually, I left that job and started a business out of a home office. For a long time, I dressed in sweatpants and tee shirts, or similar super casual clothes. I saved my “good” clothing for wearing outside the home. Before this post today, you, Caroline have actually inspired me to not save those clothes for the somewhat rare occasions. I have been trying to get some use out of those clothes, rather than having them hang in a closet. I enjoy your posts. They help be keep current with trends without having other women in the office to share fashion with. Thanks.
Hey Kathy! Thanks for the sweet comment, it’s so nice to hear! Glad you’re finding what works for you :) xo, Caroline
The Un-fancy community is so awesome! Wondering if anyone here has any food for thought anout how to find balance when your work uniform isn’t your “style”. I’m a new nurse (went back to school after working as a hairstylist) so I have a closet full of clothes (+ boots! :)) I LOVE… But obviously wear scrubs to work and then just usually put on leggings/comfies when I get home. I miss that creative outlet of putting my outfit together.. I’m also someone who normally wouldn’t wear running shoes anywhere but the gym so I don’t feel quite like myself in scrubs and runners everyday…
Hi Kate! I’m an OB/GYN resident and I feel you – I’m basically in scrubs and running shoes everyday and when I get home it’s usually time to change into my PJs… plus I bike to work. But I’ve decided that this won’t stop me from putting on “nice” clothes! I’ve recently updated my wardrobe following Caroline’s tipps – YAY! – and now I just have all my faves around. So I will wear them even if it’s just for a short amount of time every day. That usually means that one outfit “lasts” me longer than normally because I basically only have it on me for about 60 min before and 60 min after work ;) so I guess what I wanted to say: dress as you like for the short amount of time you get every day!! And get hold of some nice socks to work in your running shoes, comfy underwear is super important too, and I just bought 2 new PJ pants because I spent quite some time in those too – so why not have nice ones?
Cheers and YAY to this reader’s community!
Good points! Thank you! And you’re right… Just wear them! :) I think I’ll start pulling on one of my cozy sweaters with leggings, instead of a grubby tshirt when I get home.. Even if it’s just for a couple hours :) thank you!
Yay! You’re right, Kate — this community is amazing!! :) xo, Caroline
I don’t know if this of any use, but a friend who was a nurse was quite particular about which scrubs she wore/purchased… Maybe it depends where you work on how much choice you have in the matter? I don’t know anything about scrubs but there seem to be a lot of options. I think she told me once she would take them in if necessary to get a better fit (not tight, just a better fit, and always hemmed to the correct length). She wore semi-stylish Danskos or something similar, instead of running shoes, and just had a very put together look overall – in scrubs! No neons or bland pastels or kid-prints (altho that would be totally cool in a pediatric office). I was impressed!
YES YES YES! This is so great. I’ve loved what you’ve had to say about fantasy fall, but never thought about fantasy wardrobe. And I am totally prey to that as well. I’ve been working from home for the past year and a half now, and when I first started it was hard to even get in a groove of working from home, let alone figuring out what that meant for my wardrobe (which I had started a capsule wardrobe before the job change).
There are definitely times where I feel like I don’t get out enough to even wear my “nice” clothes, but I’m trying to get better at dressing up even when not going out. I think since it’s been hot over the summer, I’ve kept it pretty basic with not many layers and just basic t-shirts. Now that it’s cooler, I think it will be easier to dress up for myself.
At the same time, I’ve also realized that my style is very relaxed (nice jeans and an Everlane tee for example) and I love your tip about dressing in levels. But I think even throwing on that extra sweater sometimes even at home can make you feel more prepared to face the day. I know I am totally more productive and aware of the time if I take to habits that I used to have before leaving the house.
Thanks for the good advice!
Thank YOU Stefanie — for reading and sharing your thoughts! :) xo, Caroline
I do not work from home, but I have gotten swallowed up by my job’s lax atmosphere. So, I pretty much live in jeans and a decent shirt. I never wear tennis shoes to work of course, but I do find myself not feeling the cutest because I see the same 8 people every day, 80% of the time were behind closed doors in our offices and no one else besides say my manager puts forth much effort in their outfits unless we’re having a seminar – then were forced to look office appropriate. And now that it will be getting cold soon I am trying my hardest to remind myself to look cute every day.
Hey Nina, it’s no easy task to keep it up all the time, but give it a try. Let us know if it makes you feel any different during the day! :) xo, Caroline
I love your outfit.
I struggle so much with getting the clothes right. I spend so much of my time at home, with the kids and my wardrobe doesn’t reflect that – it’s scruffy and lazy. I need to invest properly in those comfy, yet cute clothes for at home.
Hey Colette, you are definitely not alone! Maybe you can even start small and just get dressed a couple days a week to see if you feel any different. :) xo, Caroline
I work from home in the mornings, and at a school in the afternoons– since my work from home time is a bit crunched, I try my best to get ready in the mornings because it makes me feel more productive. I like what you said about outfit levels! Sometimes it’s as simple as jeans and a tee, then when I head out I add a nice jacket and accessories!
Thanks for sharing!

Once I started buying better, cuter at-home clothes (instead of fancy stuff for fancy things I really don’t do) it was so much easier to look put together at home. It can be a challenge to find that fantastic sweatshirt but if you invest in a quality one in a great fabric that fits well you might even find it works for a dinner date as well as laundry day.
I work from home two days a week and I absolutely cannot roll out of bed and work in my nightie. I have to shower and put on a bra. But After that, it’s usually knit crop pants with a t-shirt or sweats (with long underwear in the winter) and no makeup until I go out.
Don’t “save” clothes you like for going out. If you like them, wear them at home. It just brightens up your day a biit. Even if you just chase babies and cl an the toilet, or work from home without seeing a soul.
Oh this came at the perfect time for me. I am home most of the time and I often don’t see the point in getting dressed nicely. I mean, I want to but once I’m in front of my closet I just grab whatever is easiest. I completely agree with your idea to get ready first thing. I know on the days I do that I look a lot more put together.
I am a Ph.D. student and I do a lot of work from home. I would never wear jeans to hang around at home, but I don’t like wearing PJs either. I usually wear yoga pants, a tunic type top and a long cardigan I only wear at home. I actually have a lot of clothes that I only wear around the house. I like to preserve my clothes so they last as long as possible. I try not to wear items like jeans or dresses around the house if I don’t have to, so I can avoid spills, cat hair, extra washing, etc. I’m also more concerned with being comfortable than cute on my time.
Hey Brianna, that’s totally understandable and a good way to keep your nice clothes looking new longer. Thanks for sharing! :) xo, Caroline
So I love your blog and am slooowly working on my capsule wardrobe. I’ve gotten rid of tons of clothes but I’m having trouble replacing them. I work full time and have a toddler so most shopping I do is online, but I’ve tried to buy clothes I’ve seen on other blogs and they never look as good on me. My question is either random or creepy, but either way would totally help me out ?, could you tell us your measurements height and weight (and blood type..jk) I think it would help me know what sizes to try if I buy the clothes I see you wearing. I know this shouldn’t be that big of an issue but if it’s not trunk club I don’t return. It stays in my closet until I give it away and I’ve wasted so much money doing that.
Thanks so much!
Hey Christina! I’m 5’5″ and typically a size 00 or extra small in the clothes I purchase. I find it a lot easier to shop when I know how my favorite brands fit me.
I also keep a “fit kit” handy when ordering online (details here: http://www.un-fancy.com/smart-shopping/how-to-shop-for-clothes-online-5-tips-to-simplify-the-process-plus-my-favorite-stores-that-offer-free-shipping/) so I can compare my measurements to the clothes in question.
Hope that helps! :) xo, Caroline
yes it totally does, thank you! :)
I’m a nurse, so I spend 4 days a week in hospital issued scrubs , so I really only need to dress in proper clothes 3 days a week. I love it bc I don’t feel that I have to own a ton of clothes. :)
OMG!!!! what a post!!! this is y we love your blog!!!
uuuuuuummm where should i start! I soooo needed this post in my life! My husband has been moaning for forever coz i am not in the habit of getting out of my clothes!! and i work from home n i am at home 98% of the time… with a six month old and a toddler!!!
N i need to start from scratch coz i haaaate jeans i need to do poop cleaning and spills all day n i need like wrinkle free stain proof comfy as pjs nursing friendly clothes :D :D
I think i will start with doing my hair first and jeggings!!! :)
But i am suuuuper motivated and i am going to get it done!!!
Samia! I love your enthusiasm!! Yay! :) xo, Caroline
I don’t work from home but on those days that I am at home, I’m quite motivated to dress nicely as that makes me feel a lot more energetic hence increases my chances of being productive :)
I simply don’t motivate myself to dress cute if I stay at home :p I have to dress for work everyday so during the weekend it’s just yoga pant and hoodie, except if I have to go out (obviously) ^^
Great tips! I really find it hard to motivate myself to get dressed if i’m just staying at home, but i’m definitely using these to get better at it! :-)
I only leave to work twice a week and I have to admitt I have some issues with my “home office” look. I usually work at home in some comfy clothes, like pants and a tee (and ocasionally some sweater or a blouse), but I always change if I have to leave. My wardrobe is clearly divided into “home” and “out” clothes and the latter I don’t wear at home, because I don’t want to make it messy. Your post was food for thoughts for me – I have to do something about it.
As a sahm, I definitely struggle with fantasy lifestyle vs reality lifestyle in my wardrobe , but what I always admire is how you manage to have a minimal casual wardrobe that doesn’t look frumpy and boring. Any tips for looking cute within such a practical wardrobe (casual, machine washable) would be appreciated. Are there specific things for cut or quality or accessories that you focus on to make your look stylish? I struggle sometimes with making the practicality of jeans and tshirts not boring and dowdy.
Hey Allison, great question.
My advice would be to not worry too much about trends, but put your focus on things that work for you and fit your lifestyle. So if jeans and t-shirts is what it is right now, that’s ok!
I think the little details are what take an outfit like that from boring to stylish. For example, I almost always roll the cuff of my jeans, unless they’re flares. And I think giving your shirt a little front tuck (or knot) + rolling up your sleeves right before you leave the house goes a long way. Simple, yet effective in giving off that vibe of looking put together. For the cooler weather, throw a cute cardigan and some booties on for instant chic.
Hope that helps! :) xo, Caroline
Great idea! I especially love that it works with what you have. Any chance you can do an article on styling details like this?
Shoes and lipstick. Your clothes need to fit your activities, but something about putting on shoes (instead of slippers or bare feet) makes you feel ready to take on anything. And lipstick — not chapstick — makes you feel pretty.
Hey Virginia, great advice! Thanks for sharing :) xo, Caroline
Great post. I have worked from home for the past thirteen years. It did not take long for me to realize how much better I felt by preparing my self for the day, by dressing well, and viewing it as a creative expression of who I am.
Something that organically evolved for me, was that on laundry day, which is typically Sunday, I would revisit my closet with fresh eyes and actually find a theme which very much mimics your 10×10 challenge. I have a roller rack in my room, and would pull out garments that excited me to wear. Some weeks it was black on black on black, and other weeks it became a massive curation. This process has helped me to really define my “reality” life style and shed those remarkable pieces that made my heart flutter, but started to show signs of dust collecting on the top of the hangers.
Working from home has also afforded me the time and focus to really streamline my closet, and I have found great guidance and affirmation from your blog. Keep the great stuff coming:)
Hi Sheila, what a fun experiment! I love it. Thanks for sharing :) xo, Caroline
Love this! It’s good to hear other people have the same struggles. I work from home too and when I don’t shower and get dressed right off in the morning I feel in such a funk the rest of the day. I will go right into work mode unshowered or in PJs or will procrastinate the morning away. Gotta stick to the shower and dressed thing right off in the morning. I love putting outfits together too much to not use the things in my closet which are somewhat capsule and mostly comfy anyways. So it should be easy :p Thanks for the encouragement :)
Hi Paige, thanks for sharing your perspective too. :) xo, Caroline
Since having a baby, I’ve started a new routine of showering just before bed every night. I like to have a nice long shower (much easier while the little one’s asleep!) and I also find my hair is less flyaway after a night of sleep. Then it’s so quick and easy to get ready in the morning.
I have a three year old and a one year old and am on maternity leave.
On days where we are heading out I get dressed before they are up and then put a bathrobe over my clothes so I can’t get weetbix or any bodily fluids on me hehe I maintain a capsule wardrobe too and lay my clothes out the night before
On our stay at home days I still change into yoga pants and a jumper top – I feel so much better than if I’m in my pjs all day!
Niloopa, that is so cute and clever! Similar to the reader who wears an apron to keep herself clean. Love it! :) xo, Caroline
I tend to work out first thing in the morning and then when I get home from the gym I inevitably get caught up in work, or making breakfast, or housework, and then next thing I know it’s 1pm and I’m just getting in the shower. I’ve been trying to make it a habit to immediately get in the shower when I get home before I distract myself. Sounds simple, but I struggle! Once I’m showered it’s a natural next step to get dressed and fix my hair and it does make such a big difference in how productive I feel that day!
OK, so do you love the open toe bryr clogs or do you wish that you got the clothed toed ones? Also, are those medium or high heeled?
Hi Diana! They are the high heel and I’m crazy about them! Absolutely crazy about them. But I have to tell you, I love clogs so much that I’m thinking about getting a closed toe pair for winter, too. So, if I had to choose just one pair, I might choose a closed toe pair so I could wear them year round. :) xo, Caroline
Thanks Caroline, these are a big purchase and I’ve been keeping my eye on them for the last year, I’m so torn but I’m leaning towards the clothes toed also.
YES.Level One/Level Two outfits are essential to making my wardrobe work. I’m still working on rebuilding my closet post-pregnancy/breastfeeding, but it’s getting there. I work part-time in an office setting two half-days a week and then I’m home with toddlers on the other days. Anything I wear needs to be able to handle a lot of wear and tear and washing, but adding a nicer pair of shoes or a cute jacket to a base “comfy and functional” outfit really helps me to feel pulled together when I’m running an errand or taking the kids on an outing. Great post, thanks!
I cannot say enough good things about American Giant’s moto jacket for casual at home days. The quality and the heavy sweatshirt fabric are amazing. The look is put together but the feel is lounge-y. I’d love to see some more specifics for a loungewear capsule, Caroline! I like leggings but struggle to find decent tunic-length tops that I actually like… and I’m low on boots to wear with leggings on cold days when I do go out. So I am a little out of balance in this department. Where is your old white sweater here from?
I’ve stocked up on lounge pants from Uniqlo, I’ve got 2 floral print and a polka dot print so that I’m cute and comfy at the same time. They can also be worn outside the house perfectly and will replace any sort of tracksuit/pj nightmare that I see people going out in
I am so much more productive if I get ready. Even if I make my joggers stylish with a striped, half tucked tee, I feel like that’s something haha!
I really like what you say about fantasy wardrobe. That makes a lot of sense defined that way.
Love seeing Calli’s beautiful bag! It really takes the outfit up a notch and exudes quality.
Great tips. I dont work from home but need to motivate myself to get dressed on weekends so my better half does not only get to ever see me in pj’s or joggers… Need to make some effort for him as well…
I want to add one more tip: love your clothes! If they’re comfortable, and you love them, you won’t want to leave them in your closet all the time in favor of some faded sweatshirt…
