transitioning a romper into fall

10/04/16

fall-4234 fall-4237 fall-4236 fall-4235

Hi there. :) Two things:

1 | First things first. Go find Solange’s brand new album A Seat At The Table (here it is on Spotify) and press play. Then come back. I’ll wait.

Done? Awesome. Your Tuesday morning is about to get some seriously chill yet powerful R&B vibes.

2 | Outfit idea of the day: Pair a romper with a slouchy, long cardigan. Add some flats. Done!

This is another outfit I’d wear just about anywhere — win! It works for errands and working from a coffee shop during the day. And, with a quick swap of the flats for my fav black ankle booties, it works for a friend hang out at night.

The super cozy wool cardigan coat keeps me toasty if needed, but can easily be shed if I get too warm.

Fun news: you can create this look even if you don’t have a romper. Anyone remember this super old post where I faked a romper? It still works — just pair a top and bottom of the same color + similar fabric.

Hint: Easiest way to pull off the faux romper? Wear all black.

I sure do love styling warm weather clothes for cooler weather — I’m all about that extra versatility and use. Plus, I’m just not really ready to stop wearing this romper yet. Will I go so far as to put leggings underneath it? Time will tell.

But probably.

Oh, and I just had another styling idea! A romper with a chunky, crewneck sweater over it. So that it looks like shorts with a sweater? Yep. It could work. Totally trying that soon.

By now, you’ve probably made it through Solange’s first song. Are you not loving it? Keep listening, it only gets better.

That’s all for today. :) No post tomorrow, but I’ll see you Thursday!

I don’t have the figure to carry off a playsuit/romper, but looking at this makes me wish I did! Super cute :-)

Hey Lucy! You should try matching separates! Much easier to fit than a one piece romper, but still gives off the same vibe. :) xo, Caroline

Love this outfit Caroline! You should try it with tights, when it gets colder!

    Solange’s album is SO GOOD!

Love the cardi with the romper. Playing with seasonal contrast is fun. Like wearing a sweater with denim shorts.

I totally love the idea and your outfit!
So sad that in Romania now its too chilly so the romper without any leggings is out of discussion :( but it is a nice option :D

Solange’s latest album is so darn good! It’s one that’s timeless and can be played year after year… most importantly, the message is great and the creative direction along with it!

I came across your blog a few months ago and I love it! All your outfits are amazing and they look so cozy and comfortable. I can’t pull off the rompers (long torso) but wish I could… such a simple piece.
I have definitely picked up some great ideas from you and always look forward to your posts.

Thank you for posting and inspiring me to get back to my blogging. :)

Hey Michelle! I hope you’ll try the idea of matching separates — soooo much easier to fit, and still looks like a romper! Thanks for the nice comment :) xo, Caroline

I love almost every outfit you style – but this one isn’t a winner for me, personally. I’m not convinced that a summer romper can transition to fall, just yet. But keep working on me ;)

I don’t think I ever would have tried a cozy cardigan with a romper, but it looks so cute and fab. I just love your style, Caroline! :)

I was just thinking what others have said… pair with tights and black boots for colder weather! I am also a fan of the long, grey cardigan coat, I’ve had mine for 4 years and still wear it loads.

You have really inspired me to wear my felt hat and I’ve just realised how perfect it is for early autumn. It’s warm and shades your eyes from the low autumn sunshine. Thank you!

I think I’ll be wearing some version of this outfit tomorrow. I had put all my summer pants away, but it’s going to be 80 tomorrow in Chicago, before dropping back into the 60s the next day.

Tights or leggings with a tunic top and maybe a belt could give you a similar look when it’s a bit colder.

Hi Caroline! I’m not sure if you have already done a post like this but I would love a post on your favorite ethical/sustainable/socially responsible brands! I’ve been revamping my closet (aka getting rid of all the ill fitting cheap clothes) and wanting any new clothes I add in to be made responsibly and ethically! I’d love to know your favorites. Thanks!!

Thanks Caroline, I love this! Just wondering though, for this outfit, do you think it matters what length the cardi is? Just thinking that if it’s longer than the shorts, it might look a bit funny from the back? (like you’re wearing nothing on the bottom?). This is happening for me with a summer dress + chunky cardi that I’m wearing at the moment – the cardi is longer than the dress, and I’m trying to decide if its a problem or not.

I’m so excited to try wearing a romper this summer! Thanks for the inspiration :)

    Alice :) x

Hey Alice! I think it’s just personal preference on that one. I don’t mind having the cardigan a little longer because I just like the coziness of it. But it’s whatever you feel comfortable with :) xo, Caroline

Thanks for the tip on Solange’s album, it’s really good!

I also think that romper would be really cute with scrunchy socks and slip-in clogs.

My only issue with this outfit is that from behind, it can look like you’re not wearing any pants. Do we care about this? I have trouble with it…
