Capsule #2 // Outfit 29
How I love this skirt! Usually pencil skirts are a little too corporate for my lifestyle, but here’s something I realized: it’s not so much about the pieces you have, it’s about how you style them.
This idea opens up a world of possibility that we can’t see when we’re caught in our own rules of “I don’t wear this or that.” Don’t get me wrong, it’s good to know what works and what doesn’t, but it’s also good to revisit that mental list every now and then.
This skirt is one of my few statement pieces. I thought long and hard before buying it because (a) it was expensive and (b) because I was caught in my rules of “I don’t wear pencil skirts.” Here’s why I decided to give it a spot in my capsule wardrobe anyway:
- I needed an unexpected element in my wardrobe of jeans and striped tees. I’d learned from my first capsule that I needed some crazier pieces for the days when I felt bold.
- A well fitting pencil skirt is a universally flattering shape.
- The geometric print and color scheme fell right in line with my Spring style.
- It’s surprisingly versatile. I could wear it to run errands, then switch out a few pieces and be ready for a party. And I could style it classically, or take it in an edgier direction (like the above look).
And hey! It’s #unfancyfriday on Instagram! Want to play? All you do is snap a selfie in your Friday outfit and tag it #unfancyfriday so we can all get inspired by each other’s style. See you on IG!
