part 2: styling a silk tee four ways

05/02/17

Hello, hi! :) This week, we’re looking at four different ways to style this silk top by Elizabeth Suzann.

ES pieces look amazing paired together and that’s how lots of people wear them — think flowy tops paired with silky wide leg pants, like this. But to be honest, that style that doesn’t feel entirely me. So I’ve been having fun coming up with different ways to style it.

Today’s look is straightforwardly simple. But it just works. This is how I wear my Georgia tee 80% of the time — with skinny jeans and flip flops. Essentially, it’s my new version of jeans and a tee. It’s just as comfortable, just as effortless, but with a little more versatility in how dressed up or down it can go.

And that sums up what I love most about this top — it’s got a chameleon thing going on. The cut is casual, but the fabric is dressy, so it can match the vibe of your surroundings no matter what. All it takes is a simple shoe or jewelry swap to bring it up a few levels. I could easily swap my flip flops for a pair of chunky heels and be set for a night out.

That’s why it’s become a travel darling for me. I’ve packed it for just about every trip since I got it. In fact, I brought it with me to Las Vegas last weekend and wore it on the plane, out to a show at night, and out sightseeing during the day. Could I be wearing it too much? Who’s to say? :)

So tell me, do you have a similar outfit formula? Something straightforward and simple that works no matter the occasion? I’d love to hear your formula!

See you Thursday for part 3!

xo,

This how I’d love to dress everyday. Too warm in Fl most of the time, and to see clients not always as option…but this is me!Laurel Bledsoe

I would often dress down a pretty top with jeans. Still too cold in the UK for no jacket, but in warmer weather with sandals and now with trainers and a biker jacket.

My style is probably between classy and preppy (I’m so old fashioned XD). I just love my red plaid skirt with a crisp white sleeveless top. Easily dressed up or down. In fact, if the top is a silk and cotton weave it’s just amazing.

I love that this is so versatile for you! For the late spring weather that’s going on right now, I’m really loving the skinny pants + muscle tank + cardigan look. It’s cool enough for running errands and being active, but adding a simple cardi and a statement necklace really ups the outfit game.

Thanks for inspiring us with your creativity – it’s awesome to see you find a way to make these items really feel like you! I’m still struggling with that a bit, and I wrote up my thoughts on the blog today: https://everydayjoys.blog/

Hey Elsie! I don’t know of any specifically, but I would definitely check out Jamie + the Jones. Or if you want an Eliz Suzann piece, her vented shell looks like a similar shape, just a tad longer… The basic cut of my shirt is a square, so if you look for more of a rectangle that hangs nicely on the body, I think you’ll be in good shape! :) You could always look into her tunics or dresses as an alternative too. Hope that helps!

Check out Cuyana’s silk tee. Not raw silk but works for my long 5’8″ torso.

I like the idea, but black doesn’t suit you on the top part of your body. Maybe you will find that occasionally it gives you support on the lower half (pants, skirt). Did you check out style essences? There are other colors that are much more you. If you keep wearing grey and black, your depression will get worse. Much love to you!

I think Caroline looks classy and elegant in black.

She also looks fabulous in pink, cream and blue and all the other colours she wears.

Does the silk tee wrinkle when you sit or move around?

Hey Teresa! It’s a bit of a weightier (but still lightweight and luxurious) silk, so I haven’t had many issues with wrinkling. :)

I am absolutely loving this tee! I hear you on the multiple guises it can take on, and I would love one in my wardrobe…but – any ideas on something longer? There is no way on this earth my middle is going in a crop top, but something long and swingy?
Plus I do have a few Qs on care of a silk tee. Maybe it is just me, but I seem to always manage to get grease marks on anything solid silk I wear and then they are almost always ruined (unless the talcum powder trick works!). As a Mum, I Cant be too precious about my clothes, but I like things to last and I like to appreciate my clothes too. Xx

Hi Meg! Totally valid concerns! Let me tell you about this type of weightier (but still lightweight) silk — it is easy to care for since you can machine wash and tumble dry low. And because it’s closer to a raw silk than a processed one, it actually handles stains pretty well. If you dab the stain with cold water right away, it should be ok. She also makes the shirt in midweight linen, which is so cool for summer. As for the length, I’d take a look at her tunics or dresses as an alternative. The pieces are such high quality, I couldn’t believe the difference I felt right from the start. :) Hope that helps!

I wrote to ES for their cleaning recommendations (I have the eggshell raw silk and got some grease on it loading a bike into my car). I was able to get most of it out with just normal laundry detergent but ES customer service recommended a Janie Stick for spot cleaning stains. It’s cheap and you can get it on Amazon.

For some reason I thought you had gotten the raw silk and was wondering because it definitely looks like the silk crepe on the pictures. It’s all making sense now, lol. Don’t you love this fabric? I have the Georgia in nude and just got the artist’s smock and want to live in these pieces forever!

I guess I was confused, too. I also thought you had the raw silk (see below). Is the silk crepe nubby and textured? Or would that be the raw silk? I’m thinking of purchasing one and want to get the texture right. Thanks!

…great question. This top is actually made from raw silk, which is incredibly durable. Not like the smooth silks we get used to seeing in department stores, it is nubby and textured.

Hey Marian! Thanks for pointing that out — I misspoke on the type of silk it was! I went back and fixed the original comment as well, to minimize any confusion. It is a textured silk, but not as nubby as the raw silk (which is also supposed to be amazing). I’ve linked to the correct one. Sorry for the confusion! :)

Love this piece – but I can’t seem to quite get through the checkout process because of the low armhole. Other tops with drop shoulder/low armholes create a weird crease under my armpits and across my bust, and the tops also lift really high when I raise my arms. I can make it look okay while in the fitting room or in a photo, but in terms of actual, real-life movement, it feels so uncomfortable. Has this been an issue for you?

Hey Krystal, Maybe sizing up would help it hang a little better and not crease under your armpits? I haven’t really had the problem, sorry I can’t be more help! xo

I have a similar black silk tee from Grana that I style like this all the time. It’s just what you said: the casual cut and the nicer material make it versatile enough to do just about anything with. Even when I just wear mine with simple shoes and jeans, it always feels a bit special.

Nothing beats a black top and jeans for a classic look. The fact the top is silk and “delicious”, as you describe it [love that description!], must make it even nicer! I really like flowy tops and fitted jeans together. They balance themselves out nicely and flowy works well for warmer temps.

Most probably a similiar one but as I usually go to work with the subway, I do not wear flip flops, I am more of a snickers/ ankle boots / low heel sandals girl.
I have a thing for classic mom jeans now and on top, I like a simple neutral T shirt with a confortable texture.
For evening, I simply add a statement necklace and a red/ berry lipstick and I am done.
Maybe a light jacket if it gets cold.
Black simple skirts are also easy to combine as well as black jeans.

If I could only wear one outfit (and I wasn’t too hot or cold) it would be black t + fitted jeans + black shoes. I may just have to invest in a great t one day :)

Please talk to me about jeans….I found Eileen Fisher jeans that are perfect! I struggle with wearing them often… thinking I need to wear my linens more, but I love the look with the jeans. Maybe I should just jump in & wear them wear them wear them, cuz they are SO comfortable! Guess it is break through time for me?!?
