Capsule #3 / Outfit 53

This summer, I realized that it’s perfectly okay to have pieces in my capsule wardrobe that don’t get worn very often. Some pieces will only be right for that rare occasion — but when that rare occasion comes, I’m sure glad I have those pieces.

This vest is the perfect example of a piece I actually didn’t wear too much this summer — but I’m SO glad I had it in my wardrobe.

Sure, while I was working from home, I didn’t feel the need to throw on a jean vest. But I was really happy to have a hipster jean vest for the handful of outdoor concerts / events we went to this summer.

And … it was just plain fun to wear. :)

So don’t beat yourself up if you had some pieces that didn’t get worn much. A piece can still be a valuable player in a capsule wardrobe, even if it only gets a few wears.

Did you have any pieces like this in your summer wardrobe?

    Caroline,
This is a super cute outfit! I love the vest – it makes it! Plus the shoes are so unique – I think it helps to have long legs with gladiator sandals. I am not sure if that would look as cute on a short gal (I am short and I tend to shy away from shoes that cut me off at the ankle…although I do have a killer pair of Vince Camuto cage sandals that buckle at the ankle…oh well!!!:)

I definitely have a bunch of pieces like this – some things just don’t seem appropriate until the occasion is right, and it’s nice to have options that can be pulled out when you seem to have exhausted your wardrobe! Instead of buying new pieces, I think it’s much more productive to save some for a later date and debuting them when you need a little refreshing.

Totally! Mine is my green cargo vest. I only wore it in tailend of summer and I’m keeping it around for my Fall capsule but I don’t think I’ll wear it much. It’s perfect for those times I don’t want to look like I’m wearing the same shirt every week, which I am ;-)

Will you keep it for your fall capsule? I’m new to capsule wardrobes but giving it my first go for fall! Still collecting pieces but I love all of the inspiration I get from your blog! And I love the vest it’s a great topper. Can’t wait to see your full fall capsule! I may or may not be waiting to steal some ideas from it ;)

I keep noticing your Ona bag. It’s beautiful! I’m thinking about getting one to use as a work bag (no camera, just a laptop and lots of stuff). I’m curious, how would you say Ona bags hold up over time?

I put my bags through a fair amount of abuse — they get carried in my bicycle basket on my way to work, bumped around on public transportation, etc. I really want leather but it needs to be a leather that won’t get scuffed up if someone looks at it the wrong way. :-)

I’ve never owned a better bag than ONA. Their quality is unmatched. I’ve put mine through plenty of abuse over the past 3 years and it’s still looking awesome! :) xo Caroline

I’ve owned the same denim vest for years! I may not wear it too often, but I’m always happy to have it in my closet…because it really is the perfect addition sometimes! I actually tend to wear it more during the fall. I love how you paired yours with an eyelet skirt and those ADORABLE sandals!

Love this look! I have a denim vest in my wardrobe and same as you, it only gets worn occasionally (usually with mini or maxi dresses!), but I’d never get rid of it! xx

Cute outfit! I feel this way about my maxi dress – it doesn’t get worn often, because it’s too fussy for everyday and not great for my bike commute. But on that occasional date night or night out, it’s my go-to outfit.

You are such an enabler! After seeing all those photos of those amazing sandals, I broke down and bought them for next spring. I had no cute sandals this summer so I guess I’m all set for next year. I know that technically violates the rules, but I would have regretted it all year if I didn’t buy those when they were on sale.

As others have said here, a maxi dress kind of falls into this category. I’m happy to own one day-to-evening maxi. I may get one other. :-)

Hi Caroline — prompted by this post, a question, and sincere apologies if you’ve already addressed it elsewhere. Have you ever hated/not felt right/regretted/replaced a capsule item? If so, I think this would be such an interesting topic to address — why didn’t it work? Did you try to make it work, anyway? Would you consider altering course if a capsule item wasn’t working?

    Thanks! Maria

Oh yes! I second Maria’s comment – This is a great idea for a post – capsule regrets! And how to deal with them :-)

Ditto. I’m putting my final pieces together for my first attempt at a (post natal) capsule wardrobe for fall and the bit holding me back is the fear and indecisiveness over if each pieces is perfect and what if I forgot something I really need in a couple of months time!

I liked your alternates idea but would love to hear about regrets.

Oh and I haven’t seen anything like this when looking back through your blog, but do you ever tally up what you wore to figure out your most popular/least worn pieces and reflect on them? That would make a great post too!

      Hi Maria!

This is an awesome question! Next week is wrap up week, and we’ll be talking regrets/mistakes/least worn on Tuesday. :)

Ditto for all my vests really… I rarely wear them, but when I do, they just pull together the entire outfit.
