Remember how I’m on a quest for comfort these days? Wellp, this outfit is the epitome of what I was going for — super comfy on the inside, but super fashion-y on the outside.
Here’s what’s going on: An oversized sweater to keep warm (and to hide a food baby!). A turtleneck so I can wear a sports bra and no one will know (except you, now). And a super soft dress that’s long + form fitting (so no worries about the wind blowing it up).
And finally, the shoes. They don’t scream comfort with their 3 inch heel and pointy toes. But … you might be surprised to hear that I’d peg them at a 7 on the comfort scale — 1 being least comfortable, 10 being most comfortable. Why? Because of that nice wedge there + because I have a pair of cushy socks sheltering my toes.
I thought I would feel like a blob wearing this kind of outfit, but it turns out that it’s so comfortable that I actually don’t care. Not to mention the sharp shoes + bit of leg add a bit of sensuality to an otherwise blob-y outfit. And to me, that little bit is all it takes to make this outfit a favorite.

Looking great, as usual! Any similar boots to the ones you’re wearing that are cheaper? :D
Hi Des!
I wish I had some to recommend, but I haven’t found any yet. I would have totally bought a cheaper version if I could have found some. :-/
I’ll let you know if I come across some!
xo Caroline
Thank you so much!! =]
Hi DS!
You should check out TOMS black suede wedges. I recently purchased a pair & they’re cute too! Use WINTER5 for $5 off! Hope this helps =)
Very cute. Although I’m jealous of your bare legs in January! Definitely too cold for that in my neck of the woods. I’m having fun plotting my spring wardrobe though.
Another comfy, cozy look! I’d need to add tights, but that would still make it quite comfy. I never think to layer a sweater completely over a dress like that. Good thinking!
Question-I’ve never shopped at Forever21, but I’m assuming the quality isn’t as good as other places. How do you balance quality vs. quantity each season? Do you allow yourself certain purchases that you may not last, but you’re okay with because they’re more on the trendy side?
We are totally on the same page today, Caroline.
High waisted pleated sweats that look like fancy pants & a super cozy structured sweater for me today :D.
Even threw on some heels to drive home the illusion of fancy ;)
It’s true. The whole is more than the sum of its parts. It shouldn’t work, but it does! Looks cozy. I wish I felt more like wearing skirts on a regular basis. It’s just that in the winter, I need tights, and that doesn’t scream “comfort” to me. :) My super-stretchy distressed jeans, however…pretty much I wear them every day.
Love the sweater! I’d like to order it online but I’m not sure what size to get. Caroline- what size is the one you are wearing?
Hi Emily! I got a small. :) xo Caroline
I fell in love with this sweater, too, after seeing it here. However, I am 5ft 8 and needed medium to get the right length! What a great pick. Thank you Caroline!!
I can’t believe how you can take something so plain & inspire such consumer lust! I looked at your winter capsule & thought, “eh…winter white, big deal, plain black tunic sweater…big deal…” then I watch your photos come out & realize, “Hey! That’s not a plain sweater! It has awesome fringe sides!” and “Hey! That’s not a regular cream sweater, it’s a slouchy wonder poncho that will cover my booty!” Alas, it’s all sold out. So, now I cannot wait for the spring capsule planning!
Hi Caroline, I have to say that this is the first outfit that I see on your blog that I’m really not into…
Love love love this. I’ve never commented on your blog before, but my husband actually discovered it (linked through Joshua Becker’s blog) about 6 months ago and he thought I might like it. My husband was right! I’ve only recently been checking in with your site more regularly and starting to really put a ‘minimalistic’ (made up word?) wardrobe into practice. Thank you thank you for the time and effort you put into sharing all of this with us. You probably enjoy it deeply, but I’m sure it’s also a lot of hard work. So thanks. A ton. You rock.
Oh yes cozy comfort all the way here too. Tunic dress and cocoon cardigan but also wooly tights /and/ socks needed
I’m still trying to have more confidence in playing with volume.. well done for doing a great job! xx
I have been reading your blog for some time and love it! First let me say I love this outfit! I have one black dress that is sleeveless that I layer over and under several days of the week and know one knows it is one piece. When I layer over it looks like a skirt. Second, today I took several bags of clothing to the consignment store in my area and from the cash I received I purchased another black dress I can wear almost year around and do the same layering concept but had been out of my price range!!!!! I have a 150+ year old farm house that was built before closets were a thing and I have been using an ugly cheap wardrobe that I really don’t like. Now the wardrobe can be donated to a thrift store and I am finding so many ways to wear/combine what I have. Thank you for your inspiration!
Hi, I just wanted to say that I love your turtleneck. I have recently found this crazy love for turtleneck and I think yours is just the perfect one!

I like the outfit, but I’m not a fan of those boots, especially with bare legs. They look a little out of place with your legs being so slender and they are so clunky.
I LOVE that sweater!
I’m just stopping by to thank Caroline for all the help & tips, because I just finished my first ever winter capsule!!
You can see it here (the site is in spanish, but there are a lot of pics): http://www.cientouno.co/style/capsule-wardrobe/winter-capsule
Caroline, you’re definitely an inspiration :)
This outfit is probably a miss for me, but possibly it’s because I’m paranoid about flappy boots with my skinny-as legs. And as a fellow slim build, I find shapeless knits like this can be unflattering.
But comfort? A+ indeed.
Hi Caroline! Just found your site, and I am loving it! Always interested in people’s capsule wardrobes and creativity, especially since I am so boring with mine most days. Thanks for the inspirations!
