How fun was yesterday?! Isn’t Jacquelyn awesome? I’m so excited to hear her take on style + capsule wardrobes over the next few weeks. And get excited because tomorrow you’ll get to meet one more spectacular lady!
So a few of you have been asking how I style my hair and I thought I’d share this tutorial from the Beauty Department with you — it taught me everything I know. For some reason though, my hair holds curl better with a straightener, so I use that instead of a curling iron.
Truthfully, styling my shorter hair has come with a pretty steep learning curve. Meaning I still have those days when I finish styling my hair, look in the mirror, and just shake my head because it so didn’t work.
But, I’m okay with that because figuring it out takes time. I think in the past, I’d get a haircut, fail at styling it for a week or two, and then just blame it on something other than my lack of trying — like, “My hair just won’t do that.” or “This cut just doesn’t work for me.”
The truth is, if I just kept practicing + trying, I might get it down one day — or at least learn something along the way.
“How Fascinating!”
Mastery takes time. And the things that seem effortless tend to take the longest.
I find it so silly + hilarious + awesome that this tiny little “lesson” on hair … applies to life too. Maybe that’s why I like style so much — it’s a non-threatening way to acknowledge + face some of my deeper stuff. Do you ever feel that way too?

I love the way this kind of short wavy hairstyle looks – I have often seen it without bangs, but I like it with bangs like you have it styled as well. I have really short straight across bangs though, so this style doesn’t really work with it. And even though I have considered cutting my hair to style it like this, I don’t want to sacrifice my straight-across bettie bangs.
Love this outfit as well. I love how simply your looks are, and it definitely helps that you were blessed with such a good figure, lady!

” the things that seem effortless tend to take the longest” You know, I’ve thought that exact same thing many times. So so true! Isn’t that crazy.
Good to know this is a common thread, and it’s not just me being neurotic. LOL.

I lobbed my hair a bit shorter than yours — 10 inches off — and it’s been brutal. I just recently started curling with my flat iron and, like you, my hair holds the curl so much better and I’m just beginning to be okay with the cut. I’m still popping biotin like a crazy woman though. :-)
Woah woah woah, I only just realized how often I’ve thought, “my hair just won’t do that.” Now I feel like the possibilities are unlimited, if only I take the time to try them out. I recently chopped off my hair too and was going to get it permed as well so that I wouldn’t have to think about adding texture to my hair every morning :P -Audrey | Brunch at Audrey’s
I commend you for attempting new hairstyles!
I rarely get drastic cuts for this reason. I think it’s fun for a month and then I revert to my old ways of going straight or loose waves. I wish I can pull off shoulder length hair. I love the volume and dimension it gives.
Right now, I’ve gotten so lazy I just air dry and blow out the bangs haha
Love it! You have me contemplating the lob now!
What products do you use in your hair? The ones The Beauty Department recommends?
Hi Katelin! The lob really is awesome and fun. :) Also, I use Living Proof’s Full Thickening Mousse and Bumble and Bumble’s Undressing Cream. I get these products in the mini sizes so it’s a little easier on the ol’ wallet. And I just use the tiniest amounts so they last a really long time. :) xo Caroline
Hey Caroline! I wanted to say how much I love your blog and how inspiring it is. Also I have a question: why do you always use + instead of the word and? It bothers me lol. Just wondering!
Dude, your hair looks great! I know what you mean about styling though, it’s hard. I have a cut that sits between my chin and shoulders right now, and slightly wavy hair. I rarely get to do any kind of styling, I run out of time in the morning, but my hair dresser recommended using some Oribe sculpting cream on wet hair and scrunching/curling by hand and either letting it air dry, or using the diffuser to blow it dry in hand curled sections. The days when I’ve tried the latter method I like my hair much more – but I’ve also found that going with the air dry bedhead look can work if I quickly blow dry my bangs to keep them from going all wonky on me. I wish it could look all chic and effortless and actually take no effort! Le sigh.
I’ve had a lob for about 6 weeks now! I use a straightener to curl my hair as well.
Looks really nice on you btw :)
This outfit is brilliant Caroline.
Casual, business-y, sexy…covers all the bases:)
I was complaining to my younger sister that my hair (super fine + straight) won’t hold a curl. She told me that she used to have the same problem, until she saw something that said to put the curler toward the top of the hair instead of starting it at the bottom, which is what I always did. She curled my hair for me to show me how. Amazingly enough, it actually works! I haven’t mastered it yet – the back is tricky – but it’s fun to practice. (I told her about your cut – it reminds me of the cut she is always trying to get but hasn’t yet.)
“Maybe that’s why I like style so much — it’s a non-threatening way to acknowledge + face some of my deeper stuff. Do you ever feel that way too?” Absolutely. I’ve learned much about myself from considering my choices regarding fashion, personal appearance and personal care.
Thanks so much for sharing this hairstyling tip. I tried it today and it worked! :)
Also, I’m very inspired by your capsule wardrobes as I have been getting rid of a lot of clothes that I just don’t love on me anymore and I’m keeping things very simple and easy. Thanks!
you are the cutest!
I’ve finally grown *out* my hair to about as long as yours is now, and it was SO hard not to give up and cut it all off during the awkward almost-shoulder-length stage! Now I’m happier with the length but am trying to figure out the bangs (keep them long but blunt? go choppier?) and seeing how cute you’ve made your lob gives me hope!

great tutorial! i just love how your hair looks. :) and this outfit as well!
