5.22 real life outfit inspiration (and the resulting awkward moment)

Want to know the inspiration behind this outfit?

I was poking around Zara last December, shopping for my winter capsule wardrobe, when I spotted a cool lady wearing pretty much this exact outfit. Most of the time, when I like someone’s outfit, I’ll just walk up to them and tell them. But this time, I just did that thing where you try to casually check out the outfit without creeping out the person wearing it.

Didn’t work. We made eye contact and it was awkward. My face did something like this.

So, if you were shopping in Zara, in Austin, in December, wearing this outfit: Hi, my name is Caroline and yes, I was kind of stalking you. But only because you have awesome style.

Have you ever gotten caught in an awkward moment like that? :)

Sweater: old from Nordstrom Rack (similar-ish here)

Pants: old from JCrew Factory (similar here)

Shoes: old from Dolce Vita (similar here)

Bag: Nordstrom

Yeah! I was walking around the streets here in Rio (I’m from Rio de Janeiro – Brasil) with two friends and started stalking a girl for the pair of flat sandals she was wearing. Stearing down like a crazy woman. And my friends did the same at some point, so her parents just noticed and my friend finally told them what we were stearing at. Then the girl said she bougth in that store in that mall and it’s so comfy and yes, it’s pretty. So the awkward moment just vanished and we went away laughing of our own craziness!

Hi Caroline, I do that all the time, usually in Zara! In fact I’ve done it so many times I’ve become pretty much inured to embarrassment now. I must say it’s where I’ve found most of my style tips, until great blogs like yours sprung up to guide me…

Yes! I love the reaction gif. The examining someone else’s outfit without being a creeper thing–I haven’t gotten caught in such an awkward way (yet), but I’ve probably looked kind of sketchy when I was shifting my eyes around, trying to get glances of the outfit details without staring too much.

I have absolutely done this but not while creeping on an outfit. I’ve creeped at people’s eyebrows and gotten caught, and worse, I’ve been noticed pointing out someone’s really good eyebrows to the friend I was with. I hope they realized I was impressed by how full and symmetrical they were!
Thanks for sharing, this totally brought me a few giggles this morning!

I discovered your blog recently and it resonated with me, particularly the frustration/disappointment/time/money waste of spending way too much time shopping and still having “nothing to wear”! What’s been most helpful is that now I realize I’ve been buying clothes that were either not suited to my life stage, or not suited to a style that truly express me! Now I know that I’m Organic/Textural, Effortless/Casual with touch of Global/Handcrafted detail! This knowledge is really informing my purchases now…thank you!

My one question, which your comments above made me think about, is does it really just take you the last two weeks of your current capsule to plan/shop for your new capsule? I’m finding that I’m so enthusiastic about getting my spring capsule “right” that I’m spending way too much time trying to figure it out! I feel like waiting until the last two weeks of March to plan for Spring will be too late. Also if something is on sale that I think I’m going to need I like to take advantage of the lower price. Hoping it will become easier as I go along, but would love to hear if you struggled with the planning stage early on, too.

Hi Kate! I’m the same way — I could spend all the time in the world putting together capsules. But the whole point for me is to spend my time on other things like my loved ones + adventuring, so I do try to be super intentional and limit myself to two weeks. Sometimes I do more, but in general, I try to stick to two weeks. But I decide to start putting together my next capsule whenever it feels right — for example, this time, I’ll be shopping at the beginning of March. Technically, that’s early, but I’m okay with that. :) xo Caroline

    Haha! That’s awesome!
I saw a middle-aged lady at Lowes today who was so cool, I was totally checking her out! She was wearing a wool fedora, ankle-length blanket coat, camo leggings, and some great clunky boots. I wanted to run up to her and ask if we could be friends. :c)

    I’ve done that too haha!

I love the shoes by the way. I tried the ones in the link on this weekend but they are really stiff and not as comfy as I expected. Wil they soften over time?

Hi Signe! They are a little stiff at first, but I’ve found that they soften up nicely with a few wears. :) xo Caroline

I definitely creep on people’s shoes! I have been caught once or twice staring intently at someone’s feet, trying to ascertain who made her shoes . . . Usually I try to just ask, but sometimes a longing stare is all that I manage :).

OH my gosh! That is a funny story and it happens to me on the weekly. I love stylish chic women and sometimes get entranced by them :)

I am absolutely dying for you to post your spring capsule wardrobe. When can we expect that? Eeek! I am planning mine right now. Definitely will be getting a pair of beige sven clogs for my spring wardrobe! Can’t wait!

    xo!

Hahaha!!! Yeah that’s happened to me too. I try and make a smile, like a hello smile, but then it just makes it that much more awkward. You look super cute in this outfit though, so it’s all worth it:)

I normally just avoid eye contact completely when checking someone out so even if they knew I was doing it.. I didn’t. hahahah!!!

I definitely get caught doing it! I normally try to just own in with a smile and wallow in the awkwardness of it later!
