We shot these photos before I impulsively cut my hair yesterday, but this outfit was too good not to share, so I’m posting it anyway. Here’s the new ‘do:
Shortest hair I’ve ever had in my life — woohoo!
To be honest, it took me a little time + a lot of playing to get it right. I love my bangs and I love a good lob, but after the cut I was a little unsure about rocking the two of them together … but too late now — how fascinating! Time to make it work.
First, I tried a deep side part and pinned my bangs to the side so they were out of the way. But it didn’t work because they’re a little too short to do that right now. Maybe later.
Next, I searched “lob with bangs” on Pinterest to get some ideas. Yes. I know. I should have done this before I cut my hair … but, on the other hand, being impulsive is way too fun. I ended up finding a whole lot of awesome ladies who rock the look. If they can do it, I can do it, right? :)
So I embraced the heavy bangs + lob.
Once I did that, things got easier. Everyone rocking this look swears by their curling irons, but I found my curling wand worked better because it’s easier (for me at least) to make waves rather than curls. To get the “undone” look, I actually mist it with water, then scrunch in a little of this to add texture.
It turns out the lob with bangs isn’t scary. It just takes a little practice.
Are any of you rocking the lob with bangs?
xo
P.S. Mark your calendars for this Sunday, March 8th at 11am – 1pm — I’ll be at the Austin Madewell store (at the Domain) offering up capsule wardrobe advice + spring outfit ideas. Bonus: free mimosas + almond croissants + 20% off the whole store. Leave a comment if you’ll be there. Can’t wait to meet you!
You look gorgeous!!! I love this style and how choppy it is at the ends. What did you ask the hairdresser for? Hannah X
uuuu! playful, chic and sexy, you rock those very nicely, lady :)
Love the new hair! Looks great. And i find it way easier to make those ‘undone’ waves with a curling wand, especially when trying to get the back sections
The new ‘do looks fabulous. It suits you. Nice to have a fresh start for spring!
I did actually! I had heavy side bangs on a side part, though. I then clipped it up into a textured bob (sort of what your cut would look like three inches shorter). I loved it. But, since I was already that short, I decided one weekend that I wanted to try a pixie.
Impulsiveness IS fun. I’m enjoying the pixie… Loving the different looks it takes on as I let it grow out a bit. Enjoy your cut! Honestly, looking at it makes me happy.
Does your hubby like the do?? Mine begs me not to cut it…I can do anything with the color but he might cry if I cut LOL. I think its very YOU. Totally works with your style and I love that.
Cute, Caroline! Is your necklace in the new image the Madewell Blackbird Bar necklace? I’ve been eying it but haven’t seen it in person!
Love the new do! So cute.
I LOVE your new haircut! I’ve had my hair about that length for a few years and it’s awesome! You are just too cute all the time <3 Just adore you and your style : )
i live in austin and would so be at the domain but will be out of town :(…LOVE LOVE LOVE your website and all your advice. changing my life. thank you so much! will look for another chance to meet you! xo
I’ve been following for a while and must say that from the short looks this is definitely my favorite! Looks lovely and much lighter than the previous style!
I love it! I used to have a bob in college, and the positive and negative side is that you have to style your hair everyday — you always look put together, but you have to unless you want to have crazy unruly hair. You’ve inspired me to try a long bob for spring though :)
Happy Friday!
I totally just got the lob with bangs too… And, I went ombre for the first time. It’s kind-of a lot of change to take on at once – especially since I’m due to have a baby any day now – but I think I’m going to like it once I get used to it. In the meantime, how do you get those great waves?!?!
Serious question that I hope you’ll answer!
Have you ever had any luck with making your search for clothes that looks like your clothes to put in the Stylebook app more efficient. In other words, have you found an efficient way to find clothes that are pictured with white backgrounds? Sometimes, I wear myself out hunting, but you’re right, it’s much cleaner to have nice pix with white backgrounds in that app.
Not Caroline, but I use Stylebook, too. I grab the stock photos from the website by taking a screenshot (Shift + Command + 4 on a Mac). If the web link is gone, I then turn to Pinterest to try and find someone who has pinned it (and take a screenshot of that). Sometimes a website only has photos of items on models and most of the time I will use those if a stock photo isn’t available, but you can always take a photo of the item yourself if you’re unable to find the exact or very similar item (sometimes I find similar items if it’s something basic). Hope that helps!

Your hair is SO chic, I love the lob with bangs!! I always contemplate chopping, but I know I’d miss long locks too much + know it won’t flatter my face. Super pretty on you though missy!
GREAT haircut! You look fantastic! I have a sort of angled bob that just about reaches my collar bones in the front. I love it. I mostly wear it messy, with a bit of texturizing something in it, but it looks good when I take the time to make it sleek and straight with a flat iron, too. Which I don’t do often, but it’s an option. I swore off bangs years ago. I have a very short forehead and the maintenance was just too much of a headache — pardon the pun. Also, my husband hates them, for some reason. He has a lot of opinions on women s’ hairstyles. ;)
Your insight and reasoning have made so many things so much easier for me. I appreciate your message and your openness in sharing. Viva la Capsule!
Congrats on your new hair cut! Love it. You look fantastic – as always.
Tanja :)
Love your new cut! It completely suits you :)
Your hair looks absolutely beautiful.
Listen up, you sweet thing. I’m convinced you could rock just about any look out there. I love your new do as much as I loved your last two styles. Thanks for being my daily inspiration on many levels. Have a great weekend!!
Your hair looks awesome! I have what is growing into a lob with some solid bangs, it’s a fun look! It took a long time to get it right though – like, 3 hairstylists and 2 bad cuts to get it right. The secret for my hair, it turned out, was not doing any layering, but texturing to get rid of bulky hair at the back of my head (I have really thick hair).
The original hair-inspiration-photo was the first one here: http://www.eastsidebride.com/2014/06/bangable-hair.html
Styling can be tricky at times, but I’ve enjoyed the short hair! I quickly realized I needed it long enough to pull back, so that’s what I’m working on now.
Hooray for haircuts!
I’ll be at Madewell on Sunday morning with my sister and a good friend of ours, who’s thinking about doing a capsule wardrobe for the first time. I hope I’ll get to pick your brain a little, because I’ve been doing a capsule since last fall, but in putting together my next capsule, I’m a little stumped.
I’m pregnant (due in July) and my bump is finally starting to show, but what size I’ll need in the next 3-6 months (through my pregnancy and for those first few months afterward) is a major unknown. Do you know of other ladies who have done a minimalist/capsule wardrobe while pregnant? Any suggestions about how to make it work?
So far my solution has been to buy 2 pairs of maternity jeans (one that looks really cute on a smallish bump now, and one that I think will grow with me through the end of the pregnancy) and one pair of maternity denim shorts, and then a handful of really floaty (non-maternity) sundresses that I think will continue to fit over the bump, but that I’ll also still like next summer when I’m not pregnant… Any other suggestions are welcome!
You should check out The Lovely Laura Life for maternity capsule ideas! http://thelovelylauralife.com/category/minimalist-style/
I’m currently 7 months pregnant and I had some hand me downs gifted to me and I bought the rest of the shirts in my capsule new – only 2 pre-pregnancy shirts still work at this point. I was able to find some good deals at the Motherhood store after Christmas sales. Their fitting rooms have a +3 month cushion that you can strap onto your belly to get an idea of how things will look. Macys also carries Motherhood brand stuff, but they don’t have the same sales and the Macys coupons don’t apply. Boo!
I found I need 5 bottoms (2 slacks, 1 skinny leg jeans, 1 wide leg jeans, 1 shorts). Thats partly because I don’t always do laundry every week and partly because I wear the slacks for work. I haven’t bought any jackets or cardigans – I just used my existing ones and left them unbuttoned as the bump has gotten bigger. Plus I have some lounge pants that I could keep wearing due to the wide waistband. I’ve started wearing my husband’s medium sized shirts as nightshirts since my larger t-shirts don’t fit over the bump easily anymore.
For bras (I’m up 3 cup sizes!!!) I’ve tried to only buy the ones where the straps can unhook in the front. There are some tutorials I’ve seen online that show how to sew a ribbon onto an existing bra to convert it to a nursing bra. Some people just start buying nursing bras, but they are pricy! …and selection is limited. Some people swear by maternity underwear, but I’ve just stuck with my aerie boycut ones that I usually wear.
AH! I LOVE IT! It’s a bit of the Alexa Chung look! I’ve been silently lurking here for a bit, and I love your style (clothes, hair, etc)… it’s everything I already like about my style, plus inspiration to take it further.
Love your hair! The bangs + bob combo totally works for you, and I actually think it’s really model-y. Look at Freja, Alexa Chung, Karlie Kloss, Abbie Lee Kershaw, and Alissa Geraghty for inspiration!
I recently cut my hair into a shorter Bob. This too is my shortest hair ever. I’m still getting used it…it’s only been two weeks. Some days I LOVE it, other days I’m unsure. I feel like I have to style it more often, so it is more work. I think you look adorable!
It’s cute! Shorter is easier than the mid-length, in my opinion. You can mess it up with a bit of pomade to give it life partway through the day.
I don’t have bangs, but I struggle with my lob. It’s a lot of work to keep it styled. I am growing it out and I think it needs some shape. I’m not digging the return to the mid-90s hairstyle I had in my Grade 12 photo. Ugh. It’s so flat and flippy and weird. Haircut is scheduled.
Love the hair!
absolutely LOVE the hair!!!!
I wish I could do that to mine!
Yesterday was the day for impulsive hair decisions! I too impulsively cut off 5inches into a bob. I was attempting a color correction and realizing the ends of my hair are incredibly stubborn, so the hairdresser and I just decided to cut them off! Haha, I’ve never been that impulsive, and it felt great!
I don’t have bangs or a lob, but I think you look awesome! So much of rocking it is just believing that it looks great, and it does! :)
Always, Anita
I love the heavy bangs with the lob! I think its a great look!

Love the hair…totally Alexa Chung , freja look going on! I’ll be at Madewell on Sunday! Looking forward to seeing you! Last time I saw you was when I met you at Gayle’s wedding at lake Brownwood!
This outfit is seriously so on point. Also, I love your hair. It looks awesome and I hope you figure out the best way to enjoy it!
I’ll be at madewell on Sunday! I need lots of help on my spring capsule. I’m so glad you are doing this. Look for me!
Wow! I went in to my hairdresser earlier this week and had a lob + bangs cut done! I had long hair but I tend to go back and forth between short (above my shoulders) and long, but this is the first time in about 15 yrs that I’ve had bangs. So far I love it, still playing with it to get the styling just right, so any product/hair style ideas are more than welcome! I love your new cut, looks great on you!
I LOVE that purse and definitely just ordered it so thank you for sharing :) Also your haircut is adorable, I’d love to see your messy hair tips/how-to!
Love the hair! I’ll be at Madewell on Sunday, looking forward to it!
How fascinating! Just cut my hair too… planned it bit more than you did but still a little scary at first. Now I’m loving it and so glad I did it.
I will be visiting Austin next week. Would have loved to meet you at Madewell…. next time!
I love how you embrace life- keep inspiring!
Looking forward to the spring capsule…. shades of blue…. interesting!
Where do you get your haircut? Do you have a favorite stylist? I’m fed up with Birds and want to start spending a little more to get a great haircut!
I am digging the LOB
Your new hairstyle looks great. So similar to mine…but I let my bangs grow out. It is such an easy cut I hope you enjoy it!
❤Sara
You look absolutely adorable and very parisienne in your new do! I’ve tried going to shorter hair more than once, but in doing so I’ve discovered that it really takes the right cut and styling to make you feel at home after such a dramatic change. In my case, I just had to find a hair dresser who really understood what I wanted! (And a little trial and error didn’t hurt either.) Hope you enjoy yours!
I impulsively tried the lob cut this winter and while I have enjoyed a change in style, it hasn’t been very practical in my day to day lifestyle. When I’m going out and style it, I have no complaints. But I’m a nurse and a long distance runner and the shorter length has made pulling my hair up and keeping it out of my face difficult. I guess that’s what I get being impulsive, haha! I’m trying to grow it out to a length where I can easily pull it back but still have a modern look.
Question for Caroline…in some of your blog posts and instagrams you’ve shared glimpses of your home. I know we all adore your style, I wanted to know if you ever thought of posting a home tour? Or talking about styling a minimalist home? Thanks!
Love the shorter hair! I’m about to chop mine off too so I’ve been pinning some stuff (and ones even shorter than this too) But as for bangs maybe try them side swept like Alexa Chung is in this pin https://www.pinterest.com/pin/1196337377603192/ or try blowing it out straight like here: https://www.pinterest.com/pin/1196337377603155/ or you could go a bit shorter with the bangs like here: https://www.pinterest.com/pin/1196337377603002/ or not even necessarily with bangs as short as that. Here’s another of Alexa Chung with her lob and bangs grazing the tops of here eyebrows instead of below them: https://www.pinterest.com/pin/31173422395025034/
You’ll look great no matter what though. Enjoy the short hair! It’s the perfect time for it!!
