I use the Stylebook app to organize my capsules + outfits. When you create a new outfit in Stylebook, there’s a spot where you can add an inspiration photo — you know, usually a photo of someone wearing a similar outfit.
But for this particular outfit, this was my inspiration. If I had some sort of light blue accessory, it would make the connection stronger, but I don’t, so that’s that. Even still, don’t you just want to hang out right there? I sure do. And I want to wear this outfit when I do.
I feel like I’m just now getting to that point where I can find outfit inspiration in home decor + nature + interesting photos. When I get tired of looking at outfits for outfit inspiration, I always go here, to my color story Pinterest board.
What about you? Where do you go for unexpected inspiration?
Beanie: old from Forever21 (similar)
Sweater: old from Anthro (similar or similar)
Jeans: old from gap (similar)
Shoes: old from Aldo (similar)
Ah! I didn’t know you used the Stylebook app! So cool. I came across it and started using it at the end of my fall capsule. And it’s pretty awesome right? Definitely a great tool to use for a successful capsule wardrobe-r [newbie or veteran]. I still find outfit inspiration mostly from other outfit photos on pinterest + instagram + other places — but I too have started finding inspiration elsewhere. Like in nature or interior design pics. (I wonder if that means I’m maturing… lol) I also find that these photos are the ones that do a better job of illustrating for me how texture can add so much interest, to any scene — even an outfit. So if I’m looking to amp up the texture play (as opposed to my normal pattern play) non-outfit photos are becoming my go-to. Love your color story board on pinterest — so I wouldn’t be shocked if I go and make myself one sometime later today ;) As always Caroline, beautiful photos + inspiring words! Keep’em coming lady!
Caroline has really helped me learn the value of texture too! Before I would wear something in similar colors as an inspiration photo but it didn’t feel as interesting…then I realized it’s because I lack texture. Still working on this :)
I love the idea of using an photograph like that for outfit inspiration instead of the classic street style image. I feel like it makes the inspiration more natural, because you can just try to duplicate the feeling and mood, but don’t feel the pressure to have the exact same pieces of clothing.
Love both the winter image and your outfit, your sweater looks so cozy!

I love the slouchy sweater/poncho look. However, I have problems wearing another layer (coat/jacket) on top of such a bulky item. If it is cold outside, do you avoid wearing slouchy sweaters? or do you have a suggestion about what kind of coat to wear?
I love reading your blog every day, it is very inspiring. My husband and I are very much looking forward to starting our capsules soon.
Hi Abby,
I have a similar slouchy sweater and I wear oversized cocoon Max Mara coat over it. In my experience, if you want to wear a big sweater or blazer under your coat, coat needs to be a bit oversized too. Wider raglan or dropped sleeves are also better for layering.
I love that Pinterest board. I just created my own and pinned half of your pins. (:
I’m in the very beginning stages of planning my wardrobe, editing and mulling, putting into the box, taking out of the box. This really is a process! I’m making lots of notes in Evernote so I have them to refer to when I might be shopping (which I actually hate to do, and that is part of the problem!).
I really appreciate the reflective tone of your blog. It’s helped me a lot.
I absolutely LOVE this outfit! One of my favorites of yours. I’ve been looking for similar boots but was unsure how to style them, and here you come with the perfect inspiration :-) Happy Hump Day!
I absolutely love the style book app!! I use it every single day. I would never have though to put inspiration photos of decor items in colors I love. What a smart idea!!!
I feel so warm and comfy just looking at this outfit! You captured the feeling of that window seat perfectly!
I love how you styled your boots, I’m always so hesitant to tuck pants into shorter boots, but when you don’t it really limits your looks. I think I’m going to be brave this week and just do it. Thanks for the inspiration!
OMG! I’m looking at your pinterest boards and the STYLE/husband is the best! hahaha the fact that you have a board so he knows his style! I have shared some pinterest outfist to my boyfriend but now I’m actually creating a new board just dedicated to the way I would like him to style. Thanks Caro! :)
I love this outfit! So cozy! I never expected to find inspiration through non-outfit photos!
Thanks for sharing the Stylebook app! I am definitely going to get it!
You mean besides your blog? In all seriousness I just wrote a blog post today talking about how I find inspiration for mixing and matching capsule wardrobe pieces here on Unfancy. :-)
Otherwise – ARCHITECTURE!
I always been obsessed with the lines on great architecture. How the lines of elements in the design align and don’t align and the juxtaposition that creates or doesn’t create. I tend to love modern and post modern architecture with clean simple lines and well thought out focal points. Outfits I love have those same qualities, simple lines that flow and create long silhouettes with a pop of color, pattern, or texture as the focal point.
Loving this question for today and agree with Nan’s comment above that it’s refreshing and doesn’t make you feel like you have to try and copy the same outfit.

I love a good color story to grasp a clearer idea of what mood or tone to go with. Yours is impeccable! I’ve also become a huge fan of flipping through magazines like Kinfolk, Collective Quarterly, Darling, Cereal and the like.
I LOVE THIS! You look so warm and cosy yet chic and put together! I never thought about looking at home decor and nature for outfit inspiration but they are perfect for finding beautiful colour combinations.
Thanks for sharing :)

I love the link between the photo and the outfit. I can TOTALLY picture you sitting in that scene in that outfit, and I can also see the connection between the picture and the outfit. I’m looking forward to checking out the app and your Pinterest board.
I absolutely love this. It seems like you but at the same time it seems like you are experimenting. I love it. It’s creative + simple + awesome.
And being inspired from a picture like that speaks to your creativity. I will definitely be looking at photography in a new way.
Thanks!

I have found inspiration with you! I follow a few blogs that focus on minimalism as that is the direction I am trying to head. Another blogger, who will remain nameless, was speaking about having “lack of money circumstances” and learning to be happy with what you have. I totaled up the cost of her outfit: $1571. I totaled up yours: $258.9. And I further appreciated that you stated most of what you were wearing was “old”.
I think your approach is very transparent, believable and realistic for the average woman just trying to look and feel great.
Thank you for all you have to offer!
I’m having flashbacks to the Clueless movie (and that Iggy Azalea music video) checking out the Stylebook app! Very cool that something like this exists. Such a great looking tool!
Hi Caroline,
I’m curious about learning more about how you use Stylebook- Would you ever consider doing a post about how you organize your capsule/plan your outfits using that app??
Agree that I would enjoy seeing that too!
This is hands-down my favorite outfit I’ve seen on this site and I’ve been reading for almost a year I think. I would totally wear this! So stylish yet completely comfortable. I’m so sad this sweater is no longer available – I’d be ordering it in an instant and those “similar” pieces just aren’t the same.
I probably don’t look hard enough for inspirations… I could so imagine getting them from food styling sites or magazines… Also nature :)
This outfit looks so, so cozy, just like the picture! I’m impressed you can find outfit inspo from a non-outfit picture. I’d say you hit the nail on the head. Well done!
Oh my gahhhhhhhh that sweater looks so friggin comfortable! Pinning your similar styles for next winter!!!!!
Huh. I think the rest of you glamorous beings must put a lot more effort into outfit inspiration than I do. My inspiration usually come from looking in my closet and wondering what is clean that I feel like wearing.
Great outfit and love the color board. Saw this post today and immediately thought of your post yesterday. http://www.bridgetteraes.com/2015/01/13/fashionable-color-combinations/
Caroline – I love your Color story board!
adorable! love that poncho sweater and those boots look so comfy!

I think this is one of my favourite outfits you’ve ever created! It’s interestinghow drawing inspiration from a more abstract source can capture a mood more completely. So simple and so right.
